  • Has anyone played extensively with the upper end of wifi5, or the entry level wifi6?

I feel a little silly, scenes as I work in a high end networking role; but all our gear is "enterprise stability"; cutting edge home equipment is rarely on the cards.

Do devices within, say 5m of a router really manage over 3Gbps wirelessly?

How horrid is the speed drop off vs. Penetration?

Im just deciding if I go and 2.5Gbe my whole house (because it just got cheap!) Or if I wifi5/6 for a similar performance but cheaper price.

    • the 2.5Gbe is always going to win because of latency. As long as your cabling can support it. If your thinking of 2.5Gbe then your talking about larger data transfers around the house and then cabled is the way to go.

      • Well, yes, as I said im a network engineer, but the main use case is large data backups, not gaming or jitter sensitive material; for that gigabit is fine.

Im just wondering how the faster technologies really handle the huge speeds that claim.

    • I had recently got the ax86u and I get 1.2Gbps/1.2Gbps when I am 5 metres away through two sets of double brick walls.

I easily max out my 1Gbps Aussie broadband HFC link.

Basically to me it feels like gigabit ethernet. I am more than happy with the performance.

Ive yet to see any faster speeds than that around the house and I have a small 3 bedroom single level house, but my internal walls are double brick vs more modern homes which use gyprock.

Also remember I don't have that many wireless devices in the house. So at most 4 devices are streaming YouTube/Netflix at the same time.

The two devices that supports .ax in my household and can hit 1Gbps are an iPhone 12 and Asus ROG g14.

For devices on 11n 5ghz I am seeing around 800Mbps down and 500Mbps up which is still pretty impressive.

Again remember I have the ax86u which is a much better device than the ax56u.

    FYI, quote from *@Prodev3r

… I bought another UK router from Amazon and was surprised how even with better specs it performed poorly than the cheapo router given by my ISP.

Reason is band C is banned in the UK. https://www.cablefree.net/wirelesstechnology/unlicensed-wire…

    DO NOT BUY UK ROUTERS

    • Yeah I had to telnet into my last broadcom router and change the region also.
Not toooooo hard if you're comfortable with command line stuff.

    • install merlin and change the region? also that link seems borked

  • I've got two RT-AX88U's and can say they give me upward of 5Gbps wirelessly and I run cable between them as backhaul for the nodes. What I'm really keen on is a Wifi 6 router with 2 or more 10Gbase-t ports. Most I can find have only one or two 2.5 or 5Gb ports and I thought the whole point of Nbase-t was dynamic speed over Wifi 6+ cables. Do I need it? No. But do I want it, yes. I'm a nerd. I have a 10Gbase-T switch running ports all through my house, but hardly anything - including my routers, able to do anything more than 1Gbps via ethernet.

    • That is really interesting information for me.

I just bought a 10T switch, because… well… i throw a few TB around; but most of my machines are going to be using the pluggable brand 2.5Gbe USB adaptors (for various reasons).

im contemplating returning my switch, and using wifi alone if those speeds are proving reliable.

GbE will still exist for jitter free gaming and my Wan uplink; but I might not need it for data-transfer when wifi will ultimately be more useful… never thought id see this day!

  • Working from home and home schooling made me to search for a router that can monitor usage and site visits. Tp-link deco has a very good app, I could limit the usage time and monitor how many hours my kids are on YouTube etc. However, Deco X20 had horrible wifi speeds, though I had 3 units around the house.

Anyway, could someone suggest a router with good parental control as well as supporting VLANs to segregate my office network from home users.

    • Oh god, I just bought the x20…

Look into the synology routers. Great parental controls and vlan support coming in SRM 1.3. Should be by the end of the year based on most recent comments. RT2600ac has really solid wifi performance with the ability to add another router to create a mesh network if you need really wide coverage. One router covers my smallish house right to the property boundaries actually, however YMMV if you have double brick etc.

Obviously not Wifi 6 and there is no update planned, but you have to ask yourself if you really need it as compared to a modern AC top of the line router. Also Synology doesn’t charge you a sub for the features you just bought.

      • That’s good to hear there is something available. Thanks, I’ll check.

    • The Asus ax86u I got has what you need.

Looks very easy to setup. I have no need for it at my house so can't tell you how well it works.

The advanced firewall log which you have to enable will log all website access for wifi clients.

It's possible the ax56u also has that. Best to do research.

      • ASUS RT-AX86U is oos everywhere

        • just wait a few months, it comes on sale pretty much every 3 months.

          • @r33tom: or they're replacing with the rt-ax86s

            • @[Deactivated]: RT-AX86U will come back when there is stock. The cut back RT-AX86S is coming out at a lower price.

      • Thanks. I had ac68u before, which is not quite good in parental controls, compared to Deco app. Also, I don’t think there is VLAN support in Asus routers.

    • Today I found that Asus has BRT-AC828, which has VLANs and AiProtection. However, this ones looks to be bit older and not much popularity. Anyone had experience?

Is this going to be same as AU version or it will be different version? I bought TUF-AX3000 few weeks ago but realised I can’t install Merlin on that so thinking of return that and get this one.

  • RT-AX68U is $258.52 also from amazon uk
