Cheapest 4G WiFi Router for use with Felix

Any recommendations for the cheapest 3G/4G WiFi Router for use with Felix (Vodafone)? Prefer something that doesn't need a separate dongle.

Just for the grandparents (very low budget) to give them WiFi coverage in their small house for a couple of tablets, phones and PCs.

Cheers!

  • Have you signed up to vodafone plan already?

Often coles/woolworths have optus 4g modems for sale.

You could try this. I used to use something like that was OK but I basically was living in a one bed unit:

  • Could you not just pick up a second hand Optus Huawei 4G modem off gumtree? I am using one with a Vodafone sim.

    • How do I know if they are locked to Optus?

      • I don't think they are locked to Optus. Maybe check with the seller before you buy it. I think only the prepaid wifi hotspot devices are generally locked.

The hardware in Optus modems are set to Optus bands, so you probably won't get full speed on Vodafone network, but the speed should be decent. If I hotspot my phone using the Vodafone sim, I get 150mbps, but in the Optus modem, I only get around 70-80mbps.

  • Plenty of vodafone wifi pocket units on ebay.

  • Look around for a second hand Huawei B525 for around $50. Optus used those as their 4G LTE wifi modems and they are good. Been faultless for me for 2 years until Optus upgraded to the newer model Huawei B818.

    • Are these going to be locked to Optus though?

      • Definitely not locked to Optus as they worked with Telstra sims. Problem now is there isn’t many available at the $50 range. There used to be a lot but not when I searched this morning.

  • +1

Just to close the thread…. I got a TP-Link TL-MR6400 300Mbps Wireless N 4G LTE Router from Officeworks for $131 after a pricematch. Highly recommend it!
