I know nothing about grinders. Can someone tell me the advantage of a grinder like this?

    • You can grind stuff with it! :)

Good enough for me! Purchased! ;-)

  • Just got mine delivered a few hours ago. They are AWESOME!

You can grind to almost nano-particle size (takes a long time!) For espresso grind is really quick. Bigger grinds are faster still.

If you are thinking about this deal. Go for it. It's one of my best bargains ever on here.

    And I paid a whopping $30 delivered!

    • Have you tried grinding anything like nuts or seeds in this - would it be suitable?

        edit: nvm, yes…

      • I was also thinking of buying this to grind pepper and seeds. But then I read the review at http://www.productreview.com.au/p/sunbeam-grindmaster.html and have changed my mind.

It looks like it's good for grinding coffee beans only.

I was going to buy (something) like this to grind herbs & spices. I spent days researching and seeking opinions on various sites and from spice manufacturers. In the end it sounded like they probably wouldn't do the job. (Depending of course on exactly what you wanted to grind.)

The reason is, they don't produce a uniform particle size. (Who wants to taste "lumps" of one herb/spice on their tongue when eating a meal. (I've tried it and it isn't pleasant.) I figured I could just run it longer until I had a powder. But popular opinion was by that time the herbs/spices would have "burned" from the excessive friction.

As I said though, it would depend on what you wanted to grind with it. In my case, one thing I wanted to do was to powder bay leaves.

So I contacted a herb manufacturer (Herbies) who said it wouldn't work. That I'd get some powder, but also chunks of leaf which would ruin the meal (and he was right). They told me they use what's called a "hammer mill" that pulverises - cold, not by friction. I looked them up and they cost several thou$and. So in the end I purchased a hand mortar & pestle from Aldi.

I normally avoid Aldi products like a venereal disease, but it's been quite good for $15, when everywhere else they were $50 or more. As it turns out, it's on sale again this week (from Wed) for $10.

BTW if anyone goes to buy one, open the box first and check - because nearly every one we opened had chips around the lip - or the base that would scratch a bench top, or fault-cracks in the pestle that would mean it would break apart if dropped, or a huge indentation in the bottom centre (where the probably 7-year-old child laborer rushed the job with an angle grinder), which would mean spices would always get stuck there - making it hard to clean ready for next use.

With that last point, pick one that has a little bit sitting proud in the bottom centre, rather than a depression. At least that will grind down over time to a flat surface. (You can't raise a depression.)

  • They don't need to be precise sizes so you can just use a cheap blade type grinder for nuts, etc.

I wouln't want to risk breaking a high precision tool like this.

  • Was looking for one of those. Thanks OP

I got one at $30. turns out it's too loud to use at my desk at work without having the entire floor meercatting their heads over partitions wondering what's going on. And I already had a better grinder at home :(

So I'll just be using it as a backup at home in case my main grinder dies one day. Or maybe for trying different blends without having to empty the hopper on my main one….

But it's definitely worth $25. Good solid motor and burrs.

+1 for using the word meercat as a verb :D

I bought one last time around too - DEFINITELY can recommend as a very good buy.

Coffee Snobs (I'm kind of one but not really) will sneer at any grinder thats less than a Breville SmartGrinder but this is a very capable lil grinder that is a MAJOR stepup from the blade chopppers that are often INCORRECTLY referred to as 'coffee grinders' and sell for these type of prices.

Build quality is good - grind is pretty consistant though for espresso use it'll be pushing it as at the end of the day its original RRP is ~$120 so not really up with the $300+ grinders.

Small footprint and ease to clean makes this a great choice for use with plungers, perculators, stovetops etc. I'd consider getting another just as a backup.

They are not that loud. But not for office use LOL.

They are a STEAL at $25!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it's big and it's black.

  • You have to be mad to pay $300 for a grinder. Unless you drink espressos (ie no milk or sugar) you would hardly notice the difference.

This works great for espresso coffee and grinds much smaller still (albeit slowly.)

Bought one and hope my misses like this.

    • Oh she'll like it all right

      • Just be sure to use the right attachment…

  • I bought one last week at $30 too, $25 is such a better bargain LOL!! Still haven't received mine yet.

  • I tried seeds and it's not really working. But for such a low price you probably can buy just the stick mixer in another brands.

  • cool, was just looking for both entry level stick blender for sauces and dips, and for a bean grinder for my stove top espresso maker. This ticks the boxes, and cheap!!

  • I want to use this to ground oats to make a powder for use in shakes. Do you think this will ground it fine enough so its not gritty when you drink?

    • No, it'll be gritty. You'd need something capable of grinding to 'Turkish' level and this can't do that. Powder is pretty extreme for ANY grinder let alone a $25 posted one. :-)

      • Actually it produces the finest of fine powder. Nano particle size! It just takes a while.

        This is not a $30 grinder. It's a $120 grinder with a huge discount.

        It's superb!

  • brilliant. Having to live in 2 locations I will have my espresso machine + grinder at one, and my moka pot and this in the other. Thanks!

  • umm I posted the (apparently)POS Aldi one last week, and someone mentioned this one. Hubby decided it was probably the better buy, so we ordered it instead. Darn thing didn't have free shipping for a few days last week, and of course that's when we ordered.

Hubby's happy with it for $37, but $25 is by far a better buy.

Talbot777, I have my doubts that it would work.

    • I've had both the Aldi and this one and there's no comparison. The Aldi one went back after 2 uses - this ones is outstanding. Not even close. :-)

      • Nikko
        Exactly the same as me.

  • Thanks! Definite bargain. Bought.

  • Nice. I was going to buy the Aldi one but was too lazy to get to a store. Seems like my laziness paid off.

    • And it arrived this morning. Now to get some beans to try it out with.

  • Great deal, bought 2, one for myself and one for Mothers Day. My mum's broke a couple of years back, it was a breville.

I would like a stick mixer, plus also i've become unsatisfied with instant coffee, and would like to try some freshly ground coffee. Time to get a plunger me thinks.

  • Thanks, op :)

Now what to do for exercise for my right hand each morning instead of using a hand grinder for my beans? :(

    • +1

Standing there holding the button in while it grinds. It will work a different set of muscles. :)

  • Ordered another 2 for gifts - sort of takes the sting out of having paid $37 for it last week. lol

  • Anyone tried this with Aeropress and pourover?

  • Just ordered another for back-up or gift.

This forum is great! Thanks everyone xxx

  • Just got the Mrs to order one.

Thanks mate for the nice share.

  • Is this grinder easy to clean? Also how much coffee gets wasted / stuck in the grinder that needs to be cleaned out after use?

    • I just got one today. Grind is very fine at the low settings, and appears to be rather consistent. There is some static build up on the plastic bridge on the underside, so you need to tap it a few times - only a little remains after the tap.
