  • So you pay fitting and balancing on the Free tyre.

    • Good pickup! I will see what's listed when they return my quote request…

Isn't fitting and balancing usually free with tyre deals?

  • +2

Checked this out last year. Had got prices from Goodyear store, then saw the free Tyre deal, but price per Tyre had increased by almost 1/3!! So compare prices. Eventually picked up the OB deal with Kmart with $100 petrol offer.

    • Yep, dodgy!!

  • hmm… which would be on par with bridgestone re002 or michelin mxv8?

  • they do this one regularly, and the other one was buy a set of 4 and get a free TomTom gps

  • I see they've gotten rid of the restrictions on higher end tyres…
An excellent time to get some Eagle F1 Asymms

  • tirerack.com for high end tyres, you pay a mint in shippings, but it still saves you half.

    • benaud - how much shipping from tirerack? And roughly how much to fit at yr local tyre shop? Thanks.

      • Typically $10 fitting and $5 balancing.

All in USD, they are Continental ExtremeContact DW

        2x 225/45ZR -17 Continental Ext $121.00 $242.00
        2x 255/40ZR -17 Continental Ext $152.00 $304.00

        Shipping: $181.12
        Order Total Including Shipping: $727.12

There was a problem with the order that was going to cost me another $75 or so, they go the shipping wrong i think, but they ended up wearing that cost for me.

Payment was a little tricky, you have to do an international wire transfer, most banks charge about $50 for that too, no paypal or credit card options at that time, might be now, i bought in 2010 whilst the AUD was at about .98c and they sat in my garage for about 6 months.

Fitting was $140 which included an alignment.

All up less than $1000, which was ideal compared to the > $1500 quotes i'd had.

        • Very useful info, thanks!

    • I don't see any overseas shipping options?

      • +1

email them with what you want. They will give you shipping quote to your postcode. They ship international all the time. I was surprised when they arrived on the doorstep with no box, just sticky taped together with a shipping label, but they were perfect.

        • Wonder if it would be cheaper to use a freight forwarder?

  • +2

These guys are dodgy, they always have 4 for the price of 3 and union membership or staff offers. But if you call them and ask for a price, THEN mention the offer they always say "I already gave you the best possible price". You never actually save anything.

Kmart leaflet specials are usually much better offers and include balancing and installation.

Or get some Kumhos from Tempe Tyres or Ozzy Tyres and you'll pay half as much. They can ship to your local mechanic and it still works out significantly cheaper with install on top. But first try to get Aussie made tyres from Kmart.

This is a rip off. They try this on every year, yet when you get a quote it ends up being the same price as anyone else, because they charge extra for fitting. Derrrr… when was the last time someone walked in to buy 4 tyres, so they could go home and fit them. Should report to ACCC

    • +2

I agree, we should report it to the ACCC.

  • Any tyres you buy from tirerack, Tempe etc is not covered under warranty. If the tyre blows out and you get into an accident you cannot claim damages or blame the tyre manufacturer and must take it up with where you purchased it from.

    • Utsuboy2 - why not? You're saying if I buy Dunlop tyres from Tirerack, the manufacturer, Dunlop, will refuse warranty claims, and only tirerack will entertain such?!

    • New consumer laws took effect from Jan 2011. All warranty claims must be returned to the point of purchase, as it is up to the retailer to manage this process. Nobody is allowed to fobb you off to the manufacturer anymore - whether it's tyres, a toaster or an expensive TV.

Whitenite - as PIDIM stated its now law that whoever imports or sells a brand not through the actual manufacture will be deemed the supplier of the product and as such is responsible for all warranty and claims. If you buy tyres off tyre rack or Tempe tyres, you need to chase them up if there's any issues. In your example the Dunlop tyres you bought could be a different rubber compound, different load rating or whatever where the product could not made specifically for Australia they can outright refuse all warranties because 1) legally they can and 2) they made no money off you so why would they need to honor any warranty?

  • I received this deal a few days to the start of this promo.

Buy 4 for price of 3 however balancing is $55 and fitting another $15.

For the Assurance ArmorGrip they were $138 each.

    $138 x 3 + $55 + $15 = $484.

So yeah $121 per tyre. Didn't really work out as cheap as the promo sound.

Originally going for the Michelin XM2 but Costco didnt have stock and the ETA kept being pushed back.
I think I've learnt, with these promos, theres no real savings. Normally the price you get from any tyre stores already include fitting and balancing.
