Before purchasing any Soniq product, you may wish to do a google search with the following words:"Soniq problems". JB you have done it again!

    • i bought the 32" one… pretty awesome, specially for the price…recommended this one to my dad…(btw wasnt me that negged your comment)

    • +9

How about just googling Soniq and seeing if problems make a prominent appearance in the search results? I would suggest googling "[any brand] problems" would return substantial results, irrespective of the brand.

    • Yeah bs here. Got a 42" and its awesome, quality is amazing for the $399 we paid. Looks better than my 55" LED Samsung.

    • Of the el cheapo brands would go for Soniq every time!

    • Anecdotal evidence shows that you probably get what you pay for.
In this case it is a tv that has the majority of competitor prices up to 2.5 times its price in the market, so think of it this way.
"If I buy this panel and it lasts about half the time I expect for my next upgrade TV purchase, then will I be winning with this deal, compared to buying the higher quality/more expensive panel?"

I always take electronics purchasing on the basis of my ability to take care of it and the value for money in which it engenders to satisfy my consumption needs.

In this case I think this is a great deal, however I have no need for more than one TV as my 6yo 50" Soniq plasma more than suffices my needs, and yes I do agree most of the peripheral parts around the panel are so-so in quality.

If you directly had a problem with your equipment in the past - give the reasons of how it broke, if you purchased it under warranty and IF you looked after it. I constantly have to sift through bullshit posts on these sites like "just google-it dude - this deal is a scam." Give us your reasons and we might actually believe you.

Prefer LCD thanks. Plasmas are at give away prices but would spend the extra for lcd.

This deal is like the kogan offer except you can collect in store, negotiate a deal on extended warranty and save on freight if pickup is possible (it's a huge box, beware)! As for quality, I got a soniq 32" for $199 and it's going very nice but I got extended warranty and still saved $70 over the next model anyone was selling anywhere.

I say go in and have a look, if you like you buy and if you buy get extended warranty because when it dies outside it your getting a new one, repairs on any brand tv now days is either not possible or too expensive and anyway your repairing last generation technology! With price drops like this ill have a tv in the garden shed soon and another in the loo; shame their is nothing on tv worth watching…lol

    • thats why they have PVRs and media players built in…

now all you need is a way to transfer it from the shed to the loo so you dont loose your spot in the movie ;)

      • +3

I built a shed out of these TV's.

  • +1

I always get told, Soniq use Samsung panel etc etc, especially as a way to sell it to you.

What I've found with Soniq in the past is that everything but the panel is poor quality.

I would expect a problem within 3 years, definitely not worth it without extended warranty.

    • I was amazed to find that Sonic is a real brand, not just a JB-owned badge slapped on products from the cheapest Chinese tender.

      http://www.quatius.com/consumer-electronics/

    • My mate is just about to replace his one from 5years ago not because I has died yet but is starting to slow down when going through channels / menus. If the news ones are the same quality I don't think I'd be disappointed.

      • +2

the quality of one product doesn't represent the average quality.

        • +1

Precisely, nor does that of one model!

    • +4

I would expect a problem within 3 years, definitely not worth it without extended warranty.

Extended warranty is for suckers, man up & invoke your statutory warranty if you have a problem!

      • -2

plus, plus, plus, plus!!!!!++++ wish i could give you more than one…

shouldnt even have to buy a extended warranty, its a scam… like private health insurance… its only works because people buy it, if they didn't the free alternative (statutory waranty in this case or public health) would have too.

realisticly i think five years at this price point for a TV like this is not totally unreasonable…
longer than the extended 3 years…

      • -2

        Sigh

This is a low end Soniq TV, I guarantee you that statutory warranty will not give you 3 years warranty.

If this was Sony/Samsung/Panasonic you would at least have potential to be right.

        • +3

Facepalm!!! What scares me most is that you seem to genuinely believe that nonsense???

I don't recall reading anything about brands in the FT legislation mate! A reasonable person would not be drawing a long bow to expect a lifespan of at least 5 years for a TV set of any make or model, irrespective of brand. Well, that was certainly the interpretation when I invoked SW for a 4yo LG plasma set some time back, OFT actually suggested 7 years was not unreasonable…sorry LG! You might also want to check Choice magazine's opinion of the same topic, highly educational! ;)

Like I said, to do it you've gotta man-up…brand snob elitist pussies don't get the gold! :p

        • +3

          Stew,

Interested in finding out more info on this.
How did u go about claiming your SW. what did you end up getting?

        • Stewballs I suggest you read the legislation again.

It basically explains that it depends on price and if its a premium product in that category.

Also LG is not Soniq, as crap as LG can be, they have a proper reputation and you could definitely get a decent statutory warranty out of it.

I'm sure you could get something past 12 months, but its unreasonable to expect 3 years and nobody has ever shared an experience saying this would happen.

If for some reason I was wrong, then I would just buy pieces of junk and demand my 3 year warranty, something I know you can't do.

(Also why have I been marked as working for JB Hi-Fi….. I clearly don't…)

        • +1

samfisher, really? you think a tv should last just over a couple of years?

I rekon 10 years+ for a decent TV and atleast 5 for an average one…

        • wisc, even a high end Plasma won't run for 10 years with decent usage each day, the lamp simply doesn't have enough hours.

10 years is unreasonable for anything except for a CRT, its a shame but a reality.

        • +1

          BABOW!!!

"In fact, many plasma manufacturers boast a life span of 100,000 hours to half life! This is a longer life than a tube based television. "

thats equivilent to 54 years at 5 hours a day…

          http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/plasmatv-lifespan.ht…

or from wiki if you like:
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_display
"The lifetime of the latest generation of plasma displays is estimated at 100,000 hours of actual display time, or 27 years at 10 hours per day. This is the estimated time over which maximum picture brightness degrades to half the original value"

so id really say 5 years is a very reasonable if not more… basied on even half life of a decent set!

"Earlier generation displays (circa 2006 and prior) had phosphors that lost luminosity over time, resulting in gradual decline of absolute image brightness (newer models may be less susceptible to this, having advertised lifespans exceeding 100,000 hours, far longer than older CRT technology"

sorry this sounds a bit rude but not ment to be, just being frank… when you type it but suggest you do a bit of research before you make claims to avoid giving miss information…

        • wisc, the manual for the Panasonic TV I purchased last week disagrees with you.

It specifically mentions how long it will last, I have no idea why they would lie.

        • +1

          @Drifta,

I first contacted LG, who tried to fob me off of course. I then went to NSW FT, told them the deal & they agreed 4yrs for a TV was not an adequate lifespan for a TV, so they helped me draft a letter of demand to LG, who promptly reversed their decision & fixed the TV for me. It was working great right up until I sold it on Gumtree, heard no complaints from the dude, so he must've been happy with the purchase. :)

There were apparently a couple of other recourse options should LG not have complied, but thankfully I didn't have to pursue it any further…however, I sure as hell would have! ;)

          @Sam,

(Also why have I been marked as working for JB Hi-Fi….. I clearly don't…)

The way you're spruiking extended 'warranties' you might as well work for them! :p

Wisc is absolutely correct about panel lifespan. You seem to have your wires crossed on quite a number of issues here. I dunno what's in your manual, but it seems to contradict Pana's website: http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/TC-P50S30

          Years of Beautiful Images

Long Panel Life, Up to 100,000 Hours

One important way consumers can protect the environment is by choosing high-quality products and taking care of them so they last for a long time. A high-quality VIERA HDTV can help. Thanks to a newly designed phosphor process and new panel technology, our plasma panels last for up to 100,000 hours before the brightness decreases by half. That's more than 30 years of viewing 8 hours a day.

Maybe if you wanna use that reference Sam you could tell us what model & exactly what your manual says, coz at face value it's looking kinda like a pork-pie ATM! ;)

Cheers Stew - useful knowledge for the future ;)

I bought one 5 years ago, and constantly had problems with it. Luckily i got it with the extended warranty. Remote control as a first was not working properly (volume goes up when you press volume down and vice versa). Got it replaced twice. The screen thing died and had to be replaced twice. Going through channels have always been slow. It has just been out of warranty and fingers crossed nothing major happens although it is so attractive to replace it with how cheap the cost of tvs.

  • Soniq is actually a good brand, the 42" LED they make has fantastic picture quality, but the audio is terrible you need to hook it up to speakers. I just think this is a rip off when samsung plasma is the same price.

    • +1

They don't make the screens so I'm unsure how you can say they are a good brand.

A hyundai that uses a ferrari engine doesn't make it a fantastic car.

      • it's good value if you rip the Ferrari engine off the Hyundai!

      • I should have worded it better. Most of their TV's are well built with a good picture quality, so obviously they are sourcing some decent panels. Though their 3D model was very underwhelming.

  • is the hisense brand worth an extra $600 or so?

    • +1

At this price point you're talking about ~86% more for Hisense, so I would be inclined to say no! ;)

  • +1

can we turn off the overscan when connecting to a computer via HDMI?

  • I had a soniq set top box, the software on it was a little flaky, the channel display wouldn't update unless you open the EPG and if you pressed the wrong buttons it would freeze menus on and you have to restart it

  • +4

I own 3 Samsung LCDs and all have had problems - does that mean Samsung sucks?
    No.
Any product will have problems at some point, irrespective of brand.
This is an absolutely insane price for a 55" LED LCD TV.

  • this or a 5" smaller Pana plasma for the same price @ JB?

  • Anyone bought this TV and can comment on how it looks/sounds?

    • can give you my dads opionion once its delivered… i'd imagine that would be some time next week..

though id assume they would all be sold out by that time… I'd say check out a shop if you could, however, never trust a shop, i've seen soniqs all blotchy and blocky in the shop, got it home and its great…I rekon they do it deliberatly to upsell the more expensive models.

      • +1

I rekon they do it deliberatly to upsell the more expensive models.

They definitely do this, I put one poor drone into a conflict loop one day by asking him directly if it was indeed by design or hamfisted incompetence…nobody wants to cop the latter, so the poor guy had to fess up! :p

He ended up being a nice guy, we had a good chat about how they do it to move various brands, they might fiddle with the Sony's to make them look ordinary & tweak the Sammys/Sharps/Pana's to look spot-on coz they need them shifted out. Many punters don't know any better & buy it hook, line & sinker.

  • The TV looks good for the price. It really is impossible to tell in store running the crappy demo loop under bad lighting.

Let's just say you won't get a 55" LED TV under this price.

Belrose JB had 6 left at lunchtime today.

    • did you pick up or get it delivered? got my dad to get one, however still no sign of it being shipped.

back to normal price now… saving 200 bux wasnt too bad…

      • When I bought my Pana plasma online from JB they took bloody ages to deliver it…I had to ring them twice to confirm they hadn't forgotten!

It would have been faster & easier for me to just go get it from one of the 4 stores almost in spitting distance from my place.

        • thanks, yeah pretty poor effort from JB hifi, been over a week and not even sure if they have shipped it yet…
considering they are going to use a corrier which will only take a day or two… must be a slow warehouse getting it out!

  • so i brought one a week ago on a sunday they delivered it the next day in the afternoon.
love the picture (went from an old tv) im having trouble with getting some channels on it i dont know if its the aerial
