Recommendation for Office/Gaming Chair - Heavy Duty (Budget $500-800)

Hey folks, looking for chair recommendations…

Budget $500-$800.
10-12 hours daily use with a combo of work & gaming
High back, headrest would be nice but not required

Currently on a 10ish year old custom made chair from Gregory's that was provided by work when I was >200kg. Now 50kg lighter, I am looking for something in the 150-180kg range.

Torn between office style or gaming style and have sort of landed on one of these but am open to any other suggestions, comments or feedback on the below. As far as I can tell, the only real difference in the AndaSeat ones is fabrix vs their version of "leather".

Am also currently in NSW lockdown, so don't have the luxury of visiting a showroom and testing things out, though that would be ideal.

I love the fact you can get negged without an explanatory comment. Unlike when you neg an ozbargain bargain. Why the difference?

when I was >200kg. Now 50kg later, I am looking for something in the 150-180kg range.

Just confirming you mean lighter not later? I know you have the weight range, later implies you've gained weight.

Anyway, I am a big fan of the Steelcase Leap and they have a Plus model which is larger and supports more weight. It is out of the price range but you should be able to claim on tax…

Ah, I did mean later but implying that I had lost it with the weight range requirement. Lighter indeed.

That looks excellent and with the tax claim, would be a better option, especially with the longer warranty period. Wonder whereabouts I can find one in Newcastle, NSW.

      Cheers.

Yeah, definitely try before you buy. There is a steelcase showroom in Sydney if you fancy the drive. Should call or email first to see if they even have the model.

        • Not an option at the moment. Maybe post double vaxx freedom day, but even then it might not be an option.

Wonder if repairing my Gregory chair is a better option?

Don't buy a gaming chair. What I would recommend is take some trips to office furniture stores. They typically have a lot of office chairs and you can try 20-30 per visit. Find what you like and what is important to you then buy. Might be hard if you are in a COVID area but this makes a lot of difference.

    • Yeah, COVID lockdown at the moment and even with that in mind, there's not a great range of office furniture stores in my LGA. Will have to do some research and see what is in the area.

      Cheers.

  • Wait a couple weeks till early October. IKEA are releasing a host of new "gamer" kit in collaboration with ASUS ROG that is likely to be decent quality and reasonably priced. There's several chairs in the new range.

$200'ish based on the Chinese site for this one:

    $400'ish for this one:

    • Cheers for the recommendation but I don't think anything from there will meet weight requirements.

I bought a HM Aeron, and no regret so far. It is worth of the price.

    • Very high on my preference list but concerned at spending $2k on a chair if I am on the edge of the max weight capacity.

I dont have any recommendations but I have been looking (on and off for several years) for a good quality chair with similar weight range and have honestly been considering buying a loungeroom chair instead, when you do decide can you post back here with a review as I am keen on something that is comfortable and would be interested in your opinion.

    • I have sat in a lounge chair before at a computer desk and whilst the idea sounds great to start with, it's awful for lengthy periods. Would not recommend.

  • Most likely an Ergohuman Classic

An Aeron is a stretch too

really liked the Steelcase Leap, my friend bought one for $750 second hand but hard to find

    • I had looked at them but they're right on the edge of my weight requirements so concerned about splashing big money on them for that reason. Maybe in a few years.

Congrats on the weight loss and I hope you continue on that journey. You should still be looking for anything in the 'Heavy Duty' range any any serious seating store though.

'Ranger' as an example is a 160kg-rated chair for multi-shift (ie 3 shifts, 24x7 use) at a reasonable price: https://seated.com.au/product/ranger-multishift/

The one I actually recommend for most people is more expensive, but has a free-floating mechanism. If you set it up right, it is extremely good. It is the cheaper version of the RH New Logic 220 which I have, but will run you $2.5k.

    Serati Pro: https://www.badbacks.com.au/office-furniture/chairs/heavy-du…

Note that there are two versions of this char with different mechanisms. Make sure you get the 'Pro Control Synchro mechanism'. Some of the cheaper versions of the chair come with the non-pro version mechanism, and it's worth the extra $50 for the Pro.

    • Thank you and thank you. It's been a journey, for sure. Still a long way to go. I recommend everyone play disc golf - has been a life saver for me.

Most of the heavy duty places seem to have 150kg or 180kg, so nice to see some at 160kg with high backs and headrests. They look like exactly what I am after.
If only there was anywhere in Newcastle area to try one.

Disc Golf is a new one to me, but whatever works for you is the best of course. Try mixing up your exercise as well. Another 20kg will make a massive difference.

Honestly, if you can afford the Serati Pro - get it. Make sure you watch the video on how to set it up. There have been a few people on here that have bought it on my recommendation and they are very happy with it.

I have sat in both, both are excellent value and well constructed chairs. You can buy either with confidence if it is just too hard to get to try them in person. Look for a store with a decent return window or policy. Some of them will actually send one to you on a try basis, and if you like it you just pay for it.

I went for the Serati Pro and it arrived today. Now to find sometime between meetings and get it set up.

          • @Grimario: Very pleased to hear. I am sure you will be happy with it.

I would suggest that you set it up with it free-floating forward, so when you sit in it you almost need to 'balance' back. This helps engage your abs and will help hold you upright in time.

I needed a lot of adjustability and didn't want to spend 2k+ (because I would certainly end up flogging it when I move interstate/overseas), so went with the Secretlab Titan. It was the only mainstream option under $600 that had all the adjustments I wanted.

I was a little worried it was overhyped/overmarketed (and I still think it is to some extent), but I have been very happy with it. It's built like a tank, and shows no sign of wear or deformation after 18 months use. In the past, I've used $200 Ikea/Officeworks type chairs and they're always listing or coming apart after a year (I am 6'7, 100kg).

Posture wise, I am no expert and there may be some benefit to the $2k+ chairs in that regard. I find mine comfortable but who knows if it's good/bad for me long term.
