    Isn't heaps easier to use regular solenoids and a separate smart controller (like this one)? That way you can use several zones in your garden.

        It's awesome so far. The associated app has some really neat functionality around smart watering. Can utilise weather data from PWS, has the ability to set up smarts using an API.

        Also, came with an Aussie power adaptor - which was un-expected.

    • I found it was easier and cheaper to have 2 pumps with Tuya wifi switches, and zero solenoids, than one pump with controller and two solenoids for 2 zones.

      The other trick was to use the large mechanical sprinklers. They cover a much larger area than the cheap pop-ups, but with the same flow, so one zone covered backyard, and one the front. Also more reliable and less work to install.

      • No way 2 pump is cheaper, unless you wait for a deal on marketplace/gumtree. 2 pumps also means extra pipe and fittings work and water leaks through gravity if the tank level is above ground. Solenoid valve is $25 each, if you want cheap the 4 channel sonoff can do 4. Plus manifold about $20. So for $120 and an existing pump you can easily fit 2 zones. If you don't have tank and happy to use main water it's even cheaper.

        • Looking, the cheap Bunnings ~1200W pump I used is no longer available. We use bores here, as mains water costs too much.
          Then again, new bores use submersible pumps, so I guess can't easily add a second with them.

  • Seems alright. How does it compare to the Holman unit from Bunnings?
    Or a moisture sensor kit using a Raspberry Pi?

  • I had a bluetooth water kit once. Poor distance/connection/connectivity, drove me nuts and found it more to be a gimmick if anything really.

    I wouldn't waste that much money just to have Bluetooth only, what difference does it make when you have to be physically at home to do it. The orbit b-hyve is only around $84 and has wifi. But it does have some connectivity issue but I can't think of any worse than this.

  • For those interested, this site below sells irrigation control systems that are simple and low tech, and not requiring any power. When a control volume of water evaporates, a float opens a valve and irrigation starts. The control volume is gradually refilled by a dripper during irrigation. When the control volume is topped back up, irrigation stops. The cycle goes on indefinitely and automatically adjusts to prevailing conditions.
