    The sub is passive right?

    • +1

Hi bentan77, it is an Active Sub, "Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology "

      • Thanks, do you know if the sub has speaker level inputs?

        • I believe it only has line level input, for the subwoofer pre-out from an AV receiver.

    • +2

The subwoofer in this package is an active one, as required by 99.9% of AV receivers.

$150-$200 is about avg price for any 5.1 channel system imo. Not sure whats so special about this.
PS: Apart from the product being extinct.

On that note http://dicksmith.com.au/product/AE3646/philips-5-1-channel-d… philips $99 delivered.

are you really going to compare an av receiver / speaker package to a cheap all in one unit?

      • Hints:
        - "5.1 channel system"
        - "Yamaha - NS-P285 - 5.1ch Speaker Package $149 with Free Delivery for Today Onlywhile Stocks Last"

As for the AV Receiver you are referring to its $399 vs $375 at JB Hifi unless you combine it with the speakers to get it for $299 + $149 . So unless you are willing to fork out $448 for a 5.1 channel surround system you can't get the receiver for $299.

        • +2

$448 for a 5.1 system with a proper AV receiver is a good price, the extra performance, functionality and upgrade-ability, make it a much better option than any of the all in one systems that have very limited functionality.

The Philips unit does not even have any HDMI inputs for Blu-ray etc and only 1 optical input, severely limiting expandability.

Many will be fine with such a system, but if you have a few components to connect, a proper AV receiver is the best way too go for both performance and functionality.

Those all in one systems don't give great performance, The speakers posted with a proper AV receiver will be far better!

The Philips is rated @ 300w but with a huge 30%THD(ouch), that would sound terrible if you try to get the volume to any decent listening levels.

Most of those type of systems I see are usually destroyed after 12 months or so as the user has the volume too high and the speakers can't handle it.

Whilst those Yamaha speakers are not the greatest, for the price they are very good value if combined with an entry level AV receiver.

    • What really annoys me about this site is when people go on and neg deals because they think that something is comparable.

How are you comparing a dodgy all in one DVD system without an amp to a set of speakers?

Regardless of whether or not the product is discontinued (um a lot of bargains exist because products have been discontinued) this is not a bad price for these speakers.

How are you comparing a receiver to a set of speakers?

  • hi. i just got my LG 55" tv. no speaker yet, so will this be enough? is this has digital output thingie?
also, should i considering an amplifier aswell? (actually why i need amp?)
if in the future i will buy blueray player, will that player compatible with this speaker and my tv?

    • You will need an AV receiver with these, they don't have any amps built in except for the subwoofer. Yes it will be compatible with Blu-Ray.

  • Does anybody know if these can be connected with an old AV receiver Onkyo tx-sv434? Thanks in advance. Don't want to spend money on a new receiver.

    • +2

Judging by the photo of the back of that receiver I found on google images, yes it will be fine….

      • Thank you so much!

  • How would this package compare to the Okyno HT-S5405?

  • Bing lee rep do you know that your stuff is generally quite overpriced in store and online?? :) Thought I'd let you know since you're here. The speaker deal ain't bad though.

Hey Guys, we've been getting a lot of questions through our live chat about the size of the speakers. Here's a photo we found with a quick google search which really puts the speakers in perspecticve. They are substantial speakers, surpassing any of the all in one units you will see around.

    Check it out
