  • Specs look great, but I'll wait for 13th gen. New architecture always has issues, and early gen DDR5 timings look awful for the price. Great to see competition back in the space though now Intel has an engineer in charge again.

    • +2

There is some details on why the timings are so different now. Also an articture change which means that the power management chip is on the memory itself.

Personally, as a pessimist, I think this is a great opportunity for supplies to increase prices given the extra cost, yet motherboard prices to stay the same (no cost saving on the chip passed to consumers).
      Thieving bastards.

  • 12900K or 5950X ?

    • Reviews are dropping tomorrow so you should get a solid answer then. I was struggling with the same question but decided the i7 was the best value

depends what youre current hardware, if you have very good AM4 setup, stick with 5950X.

Otherwise you have to buy i9, DDR5, dont go DDR4, and new mobo, looking at 2 grand plus for a good setup.

Wait until Jan for Zen 3D

    • Keep in mind that the 12900K isnt 16 real cores, its 8 good cores and 8 "Efficient" cores so in anything multi threaded it will be completely crushed by the 5950X.

      • Also keep in mind that if you overclock it gets insanely fast single threaded scores so it depends on what you are going to use it for

      • Be interesting to compare it against a 5900X then. 8 good cores + 8 efficient cores has got to be roughly on par (or better) than 12 Zen 3 cores.

      • Leaks indicate there is no crushing by the 5950x at all, more like parity for multi threaded apps and gains in other workloads like gaming etc.. find out soon enough

17%-22% premium compared to US MSRP once you adjust for tax… what?

    • The Australia Tax. Because (profanity) you, that's why. Maybe Amazon US will have some good deals for Cyber Monday, that's where I bought 3/4 of my current rig from

      • It's got to be suppliers or retailers themselves taking advantage of early demand to wait for something official out of AMD before getting serious about pricing. This is ludicrous.

The good news is that MSY isn't messing around with 12700K pricing, for now.

    • Only the KF models too…

Also those Z690 motherboard prices are insane, e.g. $849 for Strix Z690-F. B&H has it for pre-order at US$400 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1666737-REG/asus_rog_…

  • Good CPU to use as a heater.

    • Negative, this is designed with power efficiency in mind for anything other than the highest of workloads, and you can always force PL1 @ 125 W (or lower) to keep things in check.

Only Apple & Qualcomm silicon is going to outperform this for power sipping during productivity and idle.

      • Yet to be determined! We do know that PL2 can go to 190 and 241w across the range. Which definitely isn't power efficient. Will wait for 3rd party reviews, because Intel presentations leave a lot of questions to be answered due to the fine print.

        • I'm honestly scared to see the temps on this on a dusty pc in a not very well ventilated room esp in an Australian summer that feels like a recipe for a disaster especially if you pair it with the even more power hungry 4000 series nvidia gpus.

Temperature management is going to be nuts.

          • @AlienC: Just to note, while these are almost certainly more power hungry than zen3, they probably have similar power draw to 12th gen, just intel reports it differently (and properly) now. All will be revealed in 2 days!

            • +1

@winaxter: sorry I am confused here which chips exactly are you talking about in this comment for some reason in my mind it looks like you just said that 12th gen power draw will be similar to 12th gen power draw lol.. disclosure i am tired and just got home from work and am pretty stressed out haha lol but I feel like this comment is hard to decipher sorry lol

              please explain

              • @AlienC: Sorry that was meant to be alder lake similar to 11th gen in terms of power draw.

                • @winaxter: Ah makes more sense now yeah I thought I missed a generation or something and thought I was slowly losing my mind.

  • Review is up

    • And it's disappointing for gaming usage. Only z690 available and gotta use ddr5 ram to have merely 10% better gaming performance than Ryzen rivals

      • Nice trying Intel, paying a premium for Z690 and DDR5 for 10% better performance, plus you have to weigh in the higher wattage the chip uses and the amount of heat produced, throtteling could be an issue too.

        • Yeah. D15 already throttled on a 12900k MTP. U gonna need a 360 rad if intention is for 100% production workload. David2D just updated his rig to liquid cool now. I'm getting a 5900x on BFD for sure now
