expired Kettle Potato Chips $2.50 @ Coles [Chilli Flavour Is Back!]

740

So the once discontinued Chilli flavour is back at Coles in, as far as I know, VIC stores. The classic taste is as it was originally (i.e. before they changed to a sweeter recipe ~2007), but less intense.

Here's the new packaging for those interested, http://tinyurl.com/NewPackaging.

    OHMYGOD, OHMYGOD. IT'S BACK?!

I must go buy a lifetime supply in case they discontinue it again.

    Thank you! :D

    •

No. It's NOT back. It's just a different kind of fail.
The origial never had any tomato or onion powder, which is what made the second one such fail.
The 'new original' likewise uses tomato and onion powder for the bulk of the flavouring.

If I wanted tomato chips I'd buy tomato chips.
I want chilli chips, so f*** you Kettle Co.

Kettle Chilli flavour back on the shelf? Best news since sliced bread.

  •

    Woooooooooooo Chillis back.

    •

      No, it's really not.

  • +1 vote

They stuffed up chilli a couple of years ago when they changed the recipe to taste more like sweet chilli, it's not spicy anymore.

    • +1 vote

So you should try the newly released version. I feel they are better than the sweeter recipe they used for the couple of years before it was discontinued.

    •

They essentially made them tomato flavour with chili as a minor ingredient…
Hope they've fixed it now, we'll see

  • +9 votes

Yippeeits back..I loved Kettle Chilli…They should fire the guy who discontinued it

    •

No, it's not back. It's just a different kind of fail.

  •

chilli kettles are the best! but the latest flavour was no where near as good as the originals. all the other kettle chips are crap.

  •

    Already have one for coles.

Chilli Kettle chips deserves its own post!

    •

I think the trick is to post the single deal ie. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66006 before the big combined post goes up then its ok and wont be duplicated in the big post.

A few people get the Coles and Woolies catalogues nearly two days before the big posts.

    +1 for chilli!

  •

Can anyone confirm if they changed the recipe? Chili kettle chips used to be the best chips on the market until they changed the packaging, and for some reason the chili chips seemed significantly worse. Did anyone else think so too, or did I imagine it? Which 'flavour' are the ones at Coles?

    New one: http://www.eatshowandtell.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ket...
    Old one: http://www.especiallyoffice.com/webalogue/media/000Kettle_Po...

    • +2 votes

it was worse, it was a new weaker sweeter flavour.

When it was this package it was the best : http://www.especiallyoffice.com/webalogue/media/000Kettle_Po...

This packaging should be avoided at all costs, unless they have gone back to the true old recipe: http://www.eatshowandtell.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ket...

      •

Ah cheers. I was trying to edit my comment because I just noticed yours posted nearly an hour before mine. Glad I wasn't the only one who thought it was worse.

        •

Confirmed: it is NOT a return to the original at all. It's just tweaked but still essentially a tomato/onion flavour chip with negligible chilli spice. The original was all chilli kick.

    • +1 vote

yeah once they changed the packaging they all tasted terrible. I use to like herb and spice and the old chilli recipe was the best.

    •

So what does it look like now?

    •

Yeah I hated that. It seemed to turn into sweet chilli which was just stupid

this one was the best flavour

so hottttt (burns tongue, have to eat more to minimise the burn) lol

  •

let's hope this is the original recipe ;)

  •

where can i buy the chilli flavour in sydney?

    •

Most Coles supermarkets and some IGA stores have them. Stock may be limited as they seems to be in demand!

  •

    This is amazing news.

    •

I would love to see what you say when scientists find the cure to cancer or AIDS.

      • +7 votes

"Well done scientists! Here: have some chilli chips"?

  •

man thats cooool…. the original flavour was like.. having chilli powder on original chips.. but it was like a hint of chilli.. eating a pack would definitely give you a kick of spice in your mouth..
if it is sweet now and not as strong… *pass

  • +1 vote

Great news. Now if they'd just bring back O'Grady's Au Gratin…

  •

Oh man, is this the first generation of the chilli chips? I really missed.
Since they discontinued, I told myself I will never buy kettle chips anymore.
What a shame, there are just no other chips can compare to the original chilli chips!

    •

No, it's not back. It's just a different kind of fail.

  •

    YES!!!!!!!! They woke up!

  • +3 votes

HERB AND SPICE DAMNIT! the best kettle chips ever :(

    •

I agree!!!! That was AMAZING. They discontinued, then brought it back and then discontinued again. I didn't see them on the shelves when I was busy stocking up big time on the honey baked ham though.

  •

Finally it's back….Never got that… why stop selling the by far, most popular flavour in the kettle range??? CHILLI or maybe it's like KFC randomly bringing back Hot and Spicy when everyones craving it the most!!

  •

damn this bargain, kettle chips are like heroin :(
they are soo good cos the chilli actually has some kick for a chilli lover.

  • +1 vote

About time! another great chip while drinking beer… just need Smiths pepper steak back and Im ready for the footy season.

  •

Been wondering why Woolies never stock these anymore.

  •

Looks like they're back in NSW - saw em at the Broadway store.

  • +1 vote

Bought a pack last week. Definitely not the 'original' recipe (apparently, too many complaints regarding the 'extreme' burn hence they were changed a few years back). But they do taste like the last incarnation, albeit perhaps a bit saltier. Still, they are an improvement on the Red Rock version which was a nice little filler inbetween.

The Honey Baked Ham varieties are almost near-impossible to find. Some IGAs and service stations range them, neither Coles or Woolies do so :(

    • +1 vote

aw man, that's a bit of a disappointment, but not terrible…gonna give the new chilli a try for myself atleast

and what kinda douche complains chilli flavour is too hot? wtf…

    •

I got some Honey Baked Ham few days ago thought it was on sale..Woolies had a sign stating Kettle Chips were all on sale..Well those weren't..I got jipped out of 99cents (lol) but those were terrible! :s So freaking sweet I felt like I was eating some sweet lolly..blegh.

  •

Not sure why tbh. But for whatever reason Kettle listened to those customers complaining about the heat of the Chilli.

Also, looks like Coles are now ranged to carry the Honey Baked Ham flavour - just bought a pack. The Kettle revamp seems to have been a bit of a flop…perri perri chicken and lime/chilli are out. No surprise.

  • +1 vote

OK just went a local Coles this morning and bought all 4 remaining Chilli packs. Definitely better than those sweet & sour flavour and Deli Flaming Chilli one, but the chips don't have as much red chilli powder coatedon them like the original one. Still good with straight chilli taste but not as good as the original.

    • +1 vote

Definitely agree here. Seems like lightly coated chilli but still a nice flavour. Better than the rest of their range by far. Won't stop me buying em.

  •

Anyone know if Chilli is available again in QLD too?

Kettle if you're reading this, NEVER discontinue Chilli flavour ever again… That's a dumber idea than KFC NOT offering Hot n Spicy in Shopping Centers (seriously stupid idea), and worse than no Hot n Spicy in VIC

  •

Hey, is chilli available at woolies now? I've got a raincheck for 10 packs, $2.

    •

Nope. Not yet. Coles only so far.

  •

Hehe, with so many people craving for these chilli chips, I am sure there must be a Kettle Chilli Flavour Chips fan club somewhere…

    •

on facebook it has its own page lol

  •

    omg CHILLI is backkk!!!!

is it for a limited time only?

if so, would have to stock up

    20 packs lol

    •

I emailed Snack Brands Australia a few months ago. Chilli are on 'trial' so to speak. If they sell well, they'll remain permanently within their range, if not, it is goodbye for good :(

    •

It's not back. It's closer to the last fail than the original.

    • +3 votes

      too crispy

How can chips be too crispy? That's like saying a girl can be too pretty.

      •

The real Grain Waves are crispy, but crunchy. The Kettle and Woolworths fake grain waves are not dense enough, because they've replaced grain with more corn (or something), and it's not crunchy. It's moving too close to a prawn cracker consistency, or a cheetos.

        •

agree with you there. find it far too light and not solid enough.

  • -1 vote

Why cant they bring back Thai Lime and Ginger (Purple Packet), it was so damn delicious !!!!!!!!

oops that was Red Rock hehehee

  • +2 votes

Had a friend, SolMan, who used to buy the chilli flavoured ones back in the day, cos he'd say if he'd bought any other flavour, his kids would finish them before he could get a chip in him, LoL!

But seriously, anyone that likes chilli favoured Kettles, just buy the plain flavoured ones and lightly sprinkle them with cayene pepper.

    Much better imho.

    •

      Not a bad idea.

    •

      haha awesome

  • +1 vote

just brought the last 8 packs from coles.

    the flavour is mild,
half sweet chilli and sprinkle of old chilli.

    kind of brings back the chilli flavour but not close to these ones;
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/14266475@N05/3186612625/in/phot...

    now they were wayyy chill-er!!

  • +1 vote

is it just me or are kettles less crunchy now? i haven't bought them for a while, but I remember when eating them, I used to not be able to hear anything due to the crunch. Now I can :( Think they might be thinner cut?

    •

The original recipe was more crunchy, but I don't think its less crunchy then the previous recipe.

Also these are $2.50 at coles in QLD.

  • +1 vote

Kettle chips used to be good now they've changed quite a lot..Ever since the packaging changed..lol But yea, I don't think I'll be bothering with Kettle anymore.

  •

love the chilli flavour! good deal thanks!
