I was looking around the web for a new pair of headphones recently and settled on these. Amazon UK has these listed at $352.16, significantly cheaper than Australian stock which seems to average around $575-$600 on most resellers sites.

Amazing pair of headphones. Very comfortable too. They were my main cans for years before I got the Focal Clear.

Hoping the focal clears go on sale again for $1199 soon

To clear this up for the 'high number better crowd', all of the 600 and 700 AKG open backs sold today are all:

    • bright sounding (treble forward) to some extent
    • have great imaging
    • a big soundstage
    • EQ very well due to good dampening
    • need an amp to get full dynamic performance out of them.
    • can sound a little dry and thin, are a little picky due to being built around a diffuse field target (different from commonly preferred targets like Harman) focus
    • good for competitive gaming, live recordings, diffuse field recordings

Here's what separates out AKGs 600 and 700 open backs that are sold today:

K612 - fixed cable, slightly bright but neutral with a touch extra in the upper mids and vocal presence region
K701 - removable cable, relaxed diffuse field; brighter than the K612 Pro
K702 - removable cable, relaxed in the highs compared to the K702, but more upper mid forward (a refinement of their diffuse field-based signature)
K712 - removable cable, basically K701 with bass warmth added that carries on into the lower mids (warm diffuse field), followed by a dip, then with less energy at 2-3kHz

TLDR: if you don't have a music collection built around where these shine - or you're somewhat treble sensitive - look at the K612 Pro only

There is no benefit to the K712: they all are well built, all well above the standards required for good EQ. Maybe look at the K702 if you're happy to forever use an EQ. Alternatives in the K612 Pro price range are the Sennheiser HD 560S (imaging not as good, detail, timbre and mids better), the HIFIMAN HE400SE Stealth (imaging and vocals hazier, detail better still), or reaching up beyond $250 for the Sennheiser HD 6XX for a more relaxed listen (legendary timbre, better detail again, soundstage and imaging weaker).

In the K712 Pro price range, you are better off looking at the HIFIMAN Sundara during Amazon BF sales (with cashbacks), or perhaps the Audio Technica ATH-R70X if you're after a headphone for general gaming that is spacious in its sound without being as treble forward. The HIFIMAN Edition XS may move into this list as well over time, but it's a China-only product currently and impressions are thin on the ground.

    • What would have to be the price for these headphones you listed that would make it worth to buy?

      • $250 max. They're basically 3 different flavours of the same headphone with some pad changes.

    Dankpods approved?

  • These are open back headphones.

If you are looking for something to use outside or on public transport, they are not suitable.

    Otherwise, follow jasswolf's advice above.
