PayPal Incorrectly Ruled in My Favour - What Would You Do?

I believe that PayPal may be incorrectly refunding me money after a dispute. This is what happened:

A couple of months ago, I impulsively bought something off of a random social media ad (stupid, I know). The website looked kind of odd, so I used PayPal for buyer protection.

Around two weeks ago, I still had not seen any communication from the company I bought from and the product had not yet arrived. There was no way for me to contact the seller because the ad had since disappeared, I did not receive any order confirmation, and the seller name in PayPal did not bring up any results in search engines. I filed a dispute through PayPal thinking that I may have been ripped off. PayPal contacted the seller and the seller promptly replied and provided tracking information.

This brings us to last night, where I received an email from PayPal saying that they had ruled in my favour and will be refunding the full amount. The tracking number the seller gave still works and says the products are due to land in Australia next week or the week after.

I feel as though PayPal have ruled incorrectly and I don't believe that I should be refunded if the product has been sent and is due to arrive shortly. I am waiting to speak to a PayPal rep tomorrow to see if there is anything they can do. If they stand by their decision, as far as I can see, there is no way for me to contact the seller directly.

What would you do in this situation?

Why not get in touch with PayPal and tell them everything you've just told us lol

    • I tried tonight but their customer service is closed. I'm going to speak to them first thing tomorrow morning.

Don’t do this - wait to see if the item arrives first

        • +3

And what the item actually is that has been sent….'Insert receiving parcel of rocks occurrence here'

  • I would contact PayPal when they are open to see if there is anything they can do.

Perhaps wait to see if you actually receive the item?

And then if you receive the item pay the seller again.

I've done this with an eBay purchase, PayPal payment. Item didn't arrive in expected time + weeks. Was refunded. Item turned up a couple of months later. Contacted seller, arranged another PayPal payment. Everyone happy.

        • Same some times eBay untracked item have taken a lot of times, i had been refunded by sellers, But i def do never wanna rip those hard working sellers always payed them back (by buying the same item and messaging them i got last item) on any case item not arrived case refunded but actually arrived later after estimate delivery date.

I wouldn't be doing anything until it arrives on your doorstep and is what you ordered.

Don't do anything till the actual goods you bought land on your doorstep.

Absolutely wait until the items arrive. They have sent you an empty package with tracking just to fool the system. Take photos of the outside of the package and tracking details and take a video of the opening.

  • There was no way for me to contact the seller because the ad had since disappeared

    Browsing history?

Drop shippers frequently disappear, even before stuff arrives.
There is a huge business in selling people courses/websites etc, in how to get rich from drop shipping, so people keep starting new sites, then realise it is a painful business and close them down.

I would wait until the package arrives and if it's legit, since you didn't get any confirmation or anything.

Then when the package arrives, then you make your judgement.

Take the refund, you will not be able to dispute it again, if you receive the item you can repay them, if not, then there you go.

As someone whos father has fallen to these types of purchases, absolutely keep the refund until the item arrives. He brought a cutlery set for $100 USD and what arrived was a plastic disposable bowl that you could get from the reject shop

Ok, there are dodgy tracking numbers. Not sure how it works, but a seller I bought with was late by two months. The tracking goes to a certain point and then stops. Or maybe Paypal are getting multiple complaints about the seller. They may have given out the same tracking number a few times for instance. As everyone else has said, take the refund and if the products do arrive, you can pay to the details in paypal.

  • If the random social media ad was too good of a price you can expect a cheap wrist watch in the mail

  • No way I'd be wasting my time with someone else's error with large companies involved. They have the data to know what's going on. PayPal and social media give the means for this seller to do mass business, so these sort of things come with the territory. Always painfully lengthy to sort out.

If I ever received money in error in my bank account that wasn't mine - I'd do the same - let them chase me up.

Then next time you find yourself wronged you'll have some 'credit' to calm any annoyance and not have to waste time chasing that up either.

  • Keep it

I reckon it won’t turn up, and you got lucky with PayPal

Update for those playing along at home.

The goods arrived today and boy, I am glad that more sensible heads suggested that I waited until they arrived to contact PayPal. I will absolutely be keeping the refund for this.

Even with my expectations lowered to the lowest possible point I thought they could go, what was shipped to me still stunned me with how useless it is. If I hadn't been already refunded at this point, I absolutely would have been requesting a refund now. Pretty much everything will be going straight into the rubbish bin.

Thanks for saving me a lot of trouble, OzB!
