expired Free Cans of Dick Smith Australian Beetroot This Sunday 25th 8.30-11.30am The Corso at Manly
This was posted 1 year 2 months 27 days ago, and might be an out-dated deal
From the Dick Smith Foods Facebook page:
As a sad follow up to our canned beetroot that we saved from being ploughed back into the ground… it turns out the supermarkets have refused to stock it. We have been told that all Australians want is the cheapest. So we will be giving away $100,000 worth of beautiful Australian beetroot this Sunday 25th March from 8.30am until 11.30am at the Manly Beach end of The Corso at Manly.
Come along and take a couple of cans or a carton.

"Smith will ask Coles and Woolworths to stock the beetroot for at least 20 cents more than their own-brand products, but if they decline, he will sell it at Australian-owned Flight Centre and Dymocks bookstores."I guess the fall back fell through too?
http://www.dicksmithfoods.com.au/product-range/sliced-beetro...I guess Dick should have done his homework with the retailers first…

Well done, Dick.

greenpossum on 23/03/2012 - 22:47 ¶There are a lot of overseas visitors around Manly so I guess he wants to make a point.

However, -ve for this bargain as the title is "Free Cans of Dick" on my browser tab. People around me do not understand it's a bargain website! Though the 'facial' expressions are great.. negates the -ve! :D
senorclean on 24/03/2012 - 08:20 ¶Exactly - it doesn't have a shelf life, so why get rid of it in a hurry (publicity I suppose)
+2 votes"The Australian-owned companies Dymocks Booksellers and Flight Centre were prepared to sell the beetroot for Smith, but he decided against the offer because it would have been expensive and difficult to distribute it, he said.
Instead, Mr Smith will give some of it away to food charities and will hand out the rest tomorrow morning in Manly."

The big supermarkets disgust me.
The more people who 'race to the bottom' and buy these foreign, imported goods, the less chance we have of seeing Australian goods in the supermarket (and Australian jobs).

+1 voteYou're probably partly right. But I don't come to OzBargain for food bargains.
I personally avoid the Coles and Woolies branded foods as much as I can, because I know they are detrimental to Australian food producers.
So there is some sympathy for that view. I'll pay an extra 20-50c for Aussie food. It'll cost me an extra $10 or so for my grocery shopping, but I believe that is an investment in my own future employment in Australia.
arcticmonkey on 25/03/2012 - 20:11 ¶Well said. Buying foreign goods may save a few dollars now but it's just going to result in fewer jobs for the next generation of Aussies.

Only until the resources 'boom' (I also use that term very loosely indeed) ceases to allow international mega-consortiums to rape our country. As we've seen globally, once we have negligible natural resources left to sell off for next to nothing in comparison to their real worth, these mining conglomerates will pull out & just leave us to clean up the economic & environmental mess!
A very few selfish or corrupt people in Australia (including some of our politicians) are making a hell of a lot of money from this debauchery, others in the industry are making a bit; but the short sightedness of our mining & resources policies for percieved short-term gain will come back to bite us on the backside when the bubble bursts!
/end rant/

So, pardon my ignorance… what's wrong with the beetroot? Why are they ploughing it back into the ground?
