HP AMD Turion II Neo N40L 1.5GHz Dual Core CPU, 2GB ECC RAM, 250GB 7200RPM HDD, 4 HDD Bays, RAID 0+1, 7 x USB 2.0

http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-658553-371-proliant-n40l-micros… + http://www.megabuy.com.au/kingston-4gb-ddr3-1333mhz-sdram-fo… = http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-microserver--bonus-1x-4gb-ram-k… !

Shipping was ~$16 for me, reasonable.

Not sure what went on last time (must have been pretty bad, any links?) but apparently they are in stock, in the warehouse, going by the description of the item.

Just a heads up that the Customer Service is apparently quite poor, to anyone planning on buying, that isn't first hand information though, don't take my word for it.

I'd say the ram pretty much evens them up.

      • I wouldn't. You can get 4GB ECC RAM for $25 (http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=4gb+ecc+ddr…), plus this deal eliminates the choice for people who don't want the extra RAM.

        • +1

Nice, didn't know the exclusions search for staticice, the cheapest I found was $40. You are right mate. And for anyone who doesn't want the ram, they can get the other deal.

      • It's "bonus" RAM, so apparently you're not paying for it… which means it's $40 more expensive than the other when coparing apples to apples. Plus the "free" RAM is more expensive than buying elsewhere full price anyway and you don't get the option of what to buy.

Don't you have when dodgy marketing comes back to bite you on the ass?

        • +3

To OP: don't take the negs personally. There'll be a lot of angst towards this because it's megabuy, not because it's you.

  • LOL. This is not the deal people were talking about.

Bring it back down to $200 then you might have a little more positive response from potential customers.

    • That shouldn't be aimed at me, I'm not a rep, just putting it up here, it seems to me that the price with the ram is about the same if not a better deal than the other one posted recently.

      • +3

Probably as good but MegaBuy really tarnished their rep with the last round of sales being oversold and not delivered.

        • Ok mate, reckon I should take it down then? I was unaware of past goings on.

        • +1

          No don't take it down.

A deal is a deal nonetheless, just giving a heads up for people that take customer service into consideration.

        • Ok sweet as, fair enough.

I'm still pissy after the original Microserver fiasco with Megabuy. Pretty sure I am not alone

THEY JACKED UP THE PRICE!!! sorry but they were cheaper about 2 days ago without this BS bonus and when they were cheaper they said they had no stock. Can we call for this company to be banned from ozbargain?

    • +7

Agreed, I just noticed that too. Unfortunately they will still sell!

    • -4

Actually they are in stock, and we have been selling them at 264.95 for a while..

This bundle comes with a free stick of RAM worth over $40, at the request of another OZB user.

  • On a side note, Can you install windows 7 on these?

    • Yes.

    • Could probably put Windows 8 on it too if you were after a free (beta) alternative.

    • Yes you can, W7 is a common choice for people adding in a passive GPU and turning the unit into a HTPC.

    • Sure can, if you were using it as a desktop you can even pop in a PCI-E GFX card for a better experience.. just don't rely on the CPU for anything too intensive

    • I was thinking of just a file sharing machine, is there a better alternative? like linux? I was going to share some files at work connecting to 6 other windows 7 machines

      • File sharing or NAS ? FreeNAS works quite well, and the permissions structure is pretty easy to use. Would just have a grab an external DVD drive or a usb boot copy of the software, if you choose to use it and need any help, I'll happily help out where possible.

      • If you are going to install multiple hard drives then try FreeNAS with the ZFS file system!

I installed it onto a USB stick plugged into the internal port, added 8GB RAM(ZFS loves RAM) and a PCI-E Gigabit NIC from eBay and currently get around 50-55Mb when transferring files through SMB.

        • Try telling that to a poor P4 with 4GB ram running software RAID ZFS Lol, it doesn't like it too much, but gets the job done.

        • You will find the onboard gigabit nic can do those speeds and then some. I get speeds over 100MB/s

Hmm "Bonus 4GB Ram!" but $40 more expensive than everyone else…? Is it really a bonus? Are you kidding me?

Some forums do call you guys MegaKent for a reason, afterall.

MegaJerks + MegaPriceFixing = neg from me

  • +3

After the last debacles, its nothing but minus signs for Neg-abuy.

  • For a split second, as I read the other thread, I was tempted to post this but then, even before I checked the price for bargain-worthyness I knew I'd see red and lots of it. Looks like shaw took the hit. Thanks. :)

    • Haha it's dragging my 45 +ve average down :P Ohwell, will just have to find some better deals, I must say, there hasn't been much negging of the deal here, mostly negging the retailer…

      • Yup. There are a few retailers out there that are to negs as ants are to honey. Megabuy, COTD, DWI are three off the top of my head.

        • +1

Ozstock, when it isn't 1 cent shipping.

  • +2

Not a terrible deal in itself, but Megabuy and their anti-competitive conduct can go kiss my ass.

  • +1

Well, was going to order one this afternoon, but now price jacked up to $299 & OUT OF STOCK!!! (LOL!!!))

    Game over Megabuy…

  • How is this a deal when a better one is already there.
