Considering getting this, but are there any benefits to a gaming router?

Edit - not so sure after reading the regional differences for routers

Do we need a standard clause for when UK routers are posted here?
I believe all UK routers have two critical bands removed and are therefore less effective in Aus.

It looks likes there may be changes afoot in the UK ,with the upper 149-164 5Ghz bands becoming available. Asus are decent with their firmware updates, even though not supported by Merlin.

      • Hmm interesting. So maybe no point trying to replace my UK TUF AX5400 from the last deal…

If you are prepared to to run it on Ch 36 with 80/160 Mhz bandwidth then you have scored a great deal.

          • @Snoots: Why 36 specifically?

            • +1

@mackdiddy: If you are are using 160mhz channel width this is the only option. If you using 80mhz, then the upper channels are also available.

              • @Snoots: Cheers, I'll have a look when I'm home. I think it was running in higher channels with DFS.

                • @mackdiddy: Avoid DFS channels if possible. Some devices such as cameras do not recognise them. Stick with 36-48 & 149-165 for the 5ghz band

I'm not entirely sure that UK/EU imports on wifi gear is a good idea.

If you can't change the regdom country in the interface (The option isn't available on all models), the majority of the channels on your 5ghz radios are going to be limited to 25mw output. Additionally, there'll be a small band of channels available in the middle that shouldn't be used in Australia.

Additionally AIMesh may have issues with gear purchased in different regions.

I believe it's to protect their exclusivity deals, since they've had issues in the past where people were importing T-Mobile subsidised units from the US, far cheaper than the Harvey Norman exclusive model?

Edit: Almost forgot, obligatory RGB lighting mention. Teehee.

    • "Additionally, there'll be a small band of channels available in the middle that shouldn't be used in Australia."

      1. What bands?
      2. Why shouldn't they be used?
      3. Are there regions that get those middle bands plus the ones the UK models strip out? Would those have any advantage for an Aussie?
  • Hi Just checked TP LInk Archer AX73 5400 is also Sale almost same price . Just confused which one is better ?? Any suggestion !! I think they come with UK plug ..

    • ASUS is generally a better brand especially when it comes to update, even the RT-AC68U is still being supported and it's like 7 years old. In addition you get Merlin firmware if you want stock but more utilities/functions.

      • Random question: Is there a way to undo neg votes?

On mobile it's painfully easy to accidentally neg vote someone unintentionally. That uh… Maybe just occured for me now …

  • Hi, I read in the other posts that routers from UK often miss those fast bands. Is that the same case with this router?
I'm currently using 250mbps connection and will mainly use 5ghz bands.
    Many thanks

    • I bought one last deal but have no idea how to even check this.

  • Bought one during the last deal, but if the UK frequency bands thing is true then I have regrets. Can anyone shed more light on this? Considering just paying for a local RT AX68u…

  • Nice username…

  • Another UK router deal :(
    Have to pass.

  • I wonder if it comes with an AU power adapter attachment like those multi country attachment power adapters do. If the power adapter is multi country.

If it's a UK only power adapter. Well that's no good.

It comes with UK and US but no AU. It's one where you change the plug on the head or whatever. I bought a cheap adapter.

I just got myn delivered today and for $170 over my Telstra gen2 modem this is great - all this talk of fast uk bands missing etc and no one can quantify what it even means or does. I see no issue.
I have a normal 2 level house - all up on 300 sqm and this covers all corners with great speeds
    advantage over Telstra one
    - ping is now 5 vs 10 (no big issue but hey)
    - I have dedicated gaming port so when kids, wife stream tv it doesn't lag me or affect my gaming
    - parental control that actually works - i can limit what device gets what and what they can watch, can even limit data to one hr a day etc if your kids are out of control
    - VIP server - now this alone is fantastic and worth the price, I can watch US, Canada netflix etc with a press of a button on my TV - no issues streaming, nice and fast

only go this today so I am still playin with it but its well worth the cash and if you have bigger place just get 2 and use it as mesh

    • hey great to hear an actual review, did it come with the different power adapters (AU) by chance? or are they swappable?

      • comes with UK or US plug (interchangeable) - you need to get an adapter which is $5 at Bunnings

  • Price has gone down further. It is $145.22 + $27.51 delivery now.

  • Just bought, no dripping charge for me

    • only paid $145.22 ? how ?

      • It didn't charge me shippingm. I have prime if it helps?

        • I have no prime but if I subscribe for a month and cost only 6.99 a month then use it for a month in this case to avoid $27.51 delivery fee and disable it before i get charge the next month

Will that work that you only turn enable prime monthly subscription every time you are expecting a delivery that cost over $7 ?

          • @atlinus: It doesn't hurt to try if it doesn't work just complain to support and I'm sure they would refund the prime cost too. I am in Brisbane too

  • Just bit the bullet and bought to use with my new superloop NBN service with HCL connection. I hope it works out, I was on Optus 5G before and the connection was very fast but a little unstable. I hope that the NBN service will get close to the 5G in terms of speed with an upgrade on stability.
