Does this include a hard wiring kit? Or is that extra?

    • +8

It's not included. This is the link to the hardwire kit

      • thanks, bought

      • +2

        thanks

      • +1

Silly question but do you need the kit if there's no parking mode?

        • +1

Depends how you wire it up/connect it. If the dashcam is running only when the car is running the kit is of limited use.

          • +1

@g1: wait a minute so you can wire it a certain way to make use of parking mode or the dashcam needs parking mode to use the kit?

            • +3

@HeyHeyHeyIsItADeal: I believe Parking Mode is just a mode where the dash cam only records when there is movement, which requires a hard kit.
Non parking mode dash cameras just record consistently.
              Anyone correctly if I'm wrong.

              • +1

                @robeh: spot on

                • @JimmyBargain: Not quite. There's a parking mode where it takes a timelapse (on the A119 at least). You can set it for 1 frame per second, up to 5 or so. I think you set it to do it for the first 24 or 48 hours it is parked. Also requires hardwire kit though.

            • +15

@HeyHeyHeyIsItADeal: If you wire up the dash cam to get power straight from the battery / always on fuses / cigarette lighter socket that is always on then it will keep sucking power out of the battery all the time, which is a problem if it drains the battery too much. When doing this you can have the camera in parking mode, meaning it records events or time lapse (there are a couple of options). Even if you don't use any parking modes in this wiring configuration the camera will have some standby power that will very slowly take power out of the battery.

If you wire up the dash cam with the kit you have voltage presets on the kit. The camera will keep operating all the time until the preset voltage is reached (as the voltage decreases). The kit will then cut the power to the camera so that the camera does not consume any more power. This stops the battery from being drained too much. In this situation the camera can be in one of the parking modes and will record as long as its getting power but when the kit cuts out the power and the camera has no more power then there is no recording (doesn't matter what mode was set prior to power cutting out).

You can also wire up the camera so it is only on when the ignition is on, or when the car is running. In this setup there is no recording when the car is parked as the ignition is not left on and/or car is not running when its parked. Unless of course someone wants to leave the ignition on or leave the car running when the car is parked. There are a couple of ways to have it wire up this way.

No idea why there was a neg for my previous comment… If not using the parking modes then the kit with voltage cut off is of limited use. There are some use cases but for most people without parking modes the kit is of limited use.

              • @g1: Super helpful comment for someone who knows nothing about cars and dashcams, thank you!

        • +11

No question is silly. The community understands there are first timers. I am sure someone will help.

      • Will this hard wire kit is all you need to install the camera?

        • +2

No, you will need a fuse tap and crimper. Also depending on the car, you will also need trim removal tools.

          • @lomie: Thank you. I am getting an installer to do it for me. I just need to buy everything for them.

        • this kit comes with fuse plugs for easy DIY installation.

          https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B081TY3H7T/?coliid=I2AXI0AVKD6T…

          • @JimmyBargain: Thank you for that, so this kit that you linked have all the parts i need for installation?

            • @bargainfinder: Just beware that one looks like you need to have that size fuse, so check that first. It also just replaces a fuse that's there, not sure if the fuse taps (where you have 2 fuses is better in this respect).
But it also says it only shuts off power when the voltage is lower than 11.6V (+/-0.2). At that Voltage your battery is well below capacity. You're better off with one where you can set the shut off at 12V or above to avoid battery issues.

              • @NigelTufnel: Thank you. I was stuck at work till now, look like coupon no longer work before i could place an order:(

      • +1

Does anyone have a good and simple video (for real dummies) of how to install the hardwire kit? I can follow most of the instructions but when it comes to finally plugging into the fusebox, that's when I lose it. Just can't seem to get it. Should the kit also come with fuses that plugs in? I have zero experience with these kind of things so I'm really struggling.

        • +4

You need 2 fuse taps like this. Size and ampage of fuse depends on the fuses you're tapping into.

Then you need to locate a fuse that is always live, and one only live in Acc mode to tap the 2 wires into.
Then you need to find a screw attached to metal of the body to fix the ground wire to.

    • +1

      HW kit is extra

  • Thanks, been waiting for it to come down to the $190 mark. Ordered one already.

  • Is this the same one that was $151? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/663192

    I can't find a comparison

    • +5

No not the same. Detailed comparison here

      • thanks mate

      • Unsure whether I care about the jump from full hd to 2k for $30

        Any thoughts?

        • +2

The youtube videos show an improvement going from 1080p to 1440p.

          • @g1: That would make sense. Whether it is worth $30 though

            • +2

@teacherer: I'll add, a significant improvement. Parts of videos where on 1080p can't make out the number plate but can on 1440p. But, you having a watch of a few of the videos may help you decide if the shown improvement is worth it for you.

        • 2k is better with good illumination. Full HD should give better detail at night as bigger pixels can collect more of the limited light.

          • +2

@CacheHunter: That made the choice even harder!

          • +3

@CacheHunter: That is a massive over simplification of why there may be low light performance differences, and generally used as a marketing gimmick for manufacturers / distributors. The reason the 1080p and 1440p versions have better low light performance is they are using a larger aperture to the 4k version so they allow more light in, more light better performance, but it has nothing to do with the pixel size.

It is not simply "pixel size" that determines low light performance, its image sensor, aperture and the image processing which all gets more expensive and difficult to do as you go up in resolution.

            • @[Deactivated]: @fnx renegade I agree totally. There's a lot of factors that come into play, image processor, fps, … as well as pixels and aperture. By explaining that sometimes fewer pixels is better, I wanted to convey the point that there's no one camera that's best in all circumstances, without writing a technical explanation of every factor.

There's no such thing as 'the best camera' for all situations. For me, my priorities are getting footage of someone's number plate if they've backed into me in multi-storey shopping center car park, where the lighting might be dim or shadowy and they're probably driving at a slower speed. Similarly, I also want to prioritise footage of anyone trying to break into my car while its parked on the street with trees blocking the street lighting at night. Others will have all kinds of other primary objectives in mind when buying a dash cam and need to be thinking about what is best for their specific use-case.

  • +3

Does anyone know if the buffered parking mode is now available again on the Plus Duo?

    • +1

Looking at the forums and reading between the lines it won't be available, unless you want to use an older firmware that supported it. But, who knows…

  • Stupid question - do you need a newish car for the camera? I have a 2006 Mazda so not sure if my battery can support it etc .

    Thanks in advance

    • +2

Most people wire it up by accessory power, which will only power when key is in and twisted to power. You can hard wire it to acc as well.

Otherwise you can wire it so that it records when it senses a bump but this AFAIK does not do it.

  • +2

    Thanks OP. Ordered one.

Is the Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB SD Card still the recommended SD Card?

    • +3

AFAIK yes, its still the recommended card for almost all dash cams.

      • +2

Is the sandisk high endurance better than the sammy?
        Thanks

        • +3

No the Samsung is considered better overall but the sandisk is cheaper.

Sanmsung also doesnt come with 256 if thats a deal breaker.

          • +1

@Jofzar: What advantages do you get with the Samsung over the SanDisk?

            • @robeh: My SanDisk no longer writes as fast as it used to, dead slow which seems to cause issues writing to it from the dashcam - I've just got a Samsung version (at twice the price) and it works great

    • +3

Adding to this, you only need one card right? Not one for each camera?

      • +2

Looks like only 1 required based on the manual (since the front and rear are connected via cable)

      • +2

Yes. And there will be separate files for front and rear cameras.

  • +17

    Stop procrastinating and get it!

  • I was very surprised to see that the Viofo Duo A129 came with mini usb instead of micro usb. Huge chonky shielded cables though.

  • +3
    • Does it support parking mode recording?

      • don't all recent Axx9 model Viofos have parking mode?

    • +2

I believe the Plus is still the one to get. Plus is clearer because of the 60hz refresh rate.

      • Spotted any deals?

        • +4

Sorry, I am not sure what you mean.

The deal in the comment is for the Pro and the deal you are in right now is the Plus.

    • +2

FYI i have the A129 Pro and it reverts to 1080p in parking mode (to reduce heat) , the A129 Plus stays at 1440p (2k) so its basically superior for parking mode. However the huge negative is .. the A129 PRO has buffered parking (15 seconds before and 30 seconds after incident) but unfortunately the A129 Plus just has standard parking mode.

Still perfectly acceptable as you can set the A129 Plus to 15 fps constant record while you are away from the car and it will capture everything until you return and won't obliterate the stored memory.

So basically A129 Pro if you leave your car parked unattended all day and the A129 Plus if you are only away from your car for short intervals , once you arrive home you can just unplug the power so you won't have any battery drain (if applicable to your lifestyle)

Final Note - The A129 Plus can record at 2k 60fps whereas the A129 Pro can only do 4k @ 30fps.

      • +1

Can the a129 pro drop to 2k 60fps?

        • @stickymoo , yes it can record at 2560 x1440P 60fps no problems. just can't change the parking mode to be any better then 1080p unfortunately , just keep your front and rear car windows clean and its fine.

  • +2

What’s the go to ozb dash cam of choice that has parking mode enabled and front and rear cam?

  • Does this come with a micro sd card in the box?

    • No.

  • Which model supports parking mode?

Got one last time. Can definitely recommend them!
Used the footage to report a hoon already, priceless.

  • Been waiting for this! Thanks OP

  • Anyone with Suburu eyesight installed a cam with screen like this? Those darn built-in cameras take up so much real estate.

    • My boyfriend's car has eyesight, hoping this won't look too clunky otherwise that's another sad returned gift (after the damn sunshades which never fit).

    • Yes, you can just install it to the side of the eyesight. It doesn't obstruct the eyesight cameras.

    • Yeah, doesn't take up too much room.

  • +2

how this compared to the cheapo 70 mai dashcams?

    • +2

super capacitor instead of battery + rear cam + higher video quality

  • this or a119?

    • +1

same front cam sony sensor, if you don’t need wifi and rear cam, then go with A119 v3

For installation can any place do this?

Looking to get one for my dad

    • it is fairly easy, otherwise try airtasker

      • +2

Cheers I have a problem with my hands so have motor control issues otherwise I’d do it

Will find someone who can help him

    • +2

      DIY fairly easily.

      1. They come with a 12v cigarette lighter charger (they should anyway) and that can be messily wired up to the unit and stuck on the window.
      2. If motor skills allow, you can route the cables better by going under the seat, or into the dash, out into the A pillar and pop out behind the rear view.
      3. The best solution is hard wire kit that piggy backs off the fusebox but that takes a little bit (not much more) know how.
  • Does the rear unit work seperately with its own power supply or must it connect to the front front dashcam as well ?

I got two hard ware kits in my car for two seperate dashcams but I am not happy with them so I want to replace them with this.

    • I believe it must be connected to the front but I'm not certain

    • Rear camera takes power from the front cable in the same cable which connects rear to the front.

      • So if you connect a powered cable to the rear, it won't work? It has to get power from the front cam?

        • Correct, it won't work. There is no port for connecting power. It is a singular cable containing power and data which needs to come from the front camera.

  • +1

I would recommend setting the recording interval to 1 min. Myself and many people online have issues with corrupted files from when the engine switches off. Only affects the file currently being recorded ie the last one.

I have the standard A129 Duo and am guessing it impacts the other models.

    • wait isnt this huge? I feel like this should be a small psa in OPs edit.

      • +1

It might come down to the car and if it's hard wired. For mine it is USB power so the electricity must stop when I press the stop/start button. It probably won't impact most people but it's something to be aware of.

    • I have the A129 duo and it's set at 3min interval. No issues for me.

    • I set my A119's (I prefer 2 independent cams for front and rear for better resolution overall and redundancy) and have them set to 10 mins. Never had an issue either personally.

  • Sorry, how do I apply the 20% discount ?

    • There's a tickbox

      • +1

Thank you very much. Sorry I was blind.

What else do i need to buy to install this? Also is 80-$100 to install this sound ok ?
