JB Hi-Fi Online Purchase and then instore refund, then purchase via The Card Network giftcards

Hi all, have been keeping an eye on a wifi mesh router for a while, and thought I'd smartly hold off on transferring $1000 of the TCN gift cards, until I recently found out you can't exchange them for JB gift cards online anymore.

Thus, considering there is a price drop soon, does JB allow an online purchase, click and collect pick up, instantly refund, and then re-purchase via TCN gift cards?

Thanks,

Edit: The whole reason for this is to just secure the item in case stock sells fast as JB have an online sale starting tonight followed by in store sale tomorrow.

    • No its better to create an account and waste more time then calling them and finding out 🥴

Two possible problems. Do they accept change of mind returns and do they sell returned stock or does it have to wait to be checked and counted back in to stock in order to sell (in which case it may be automatically allocated to another order as soon as it's put back into stock).

    • Good point!

I personally haven’t done that before, but that’s probably fine.

I purchased an iPad case in-store last year, and returned it to the same store a week after purchase, as a better quality iPad case went on sale. The staff wasn’t fussed about me returning the original case, as long as it was in the original, saleable condition and all the packaging was there. The return of the original case and the purchase of the new case happened in one transaction, so all I had to do was pay the difference.

(Yes, I know, I bought the original case in-store, not online, but I’m demonstrating that change of mind returns are relatively easy at JB Hi-Fi.)

To go back to your question, JB Hi-Fi also posted this on their website:

What if I change my mind about my Click & Collect in-store and wish to buy something different?

Just let our in-store staff know you've changed your mind at the counter. They can return or exchange any items in your online order that you've changed your mind about.

However, I suspect you won’t have the money from the original purchase returned to you immediately, as I have a feeling that the refund would have to be processed separately (unless you use a card from a financial institution as the original payment method and can present it to the staff in-store). You’ll also have to keep in mind that prices may be different between in-store and online (even after the sale starts in-store), so you may have to pay a difference.

It’s honestly easiest if you call the store you want to click-and-collect from and confirm whether they’re happy to do that. They may even suggest an easier solution to your question!

Thanks for your detailed response Wookie. I'll let them know when I Click and Collect, and I'm not too fussed going without the money while waiting for the refund.

In my experience, JB have been very good about change of mind refunds.

Also, I forgot to respond to this part of your post:

thought I'd smartly hold off on transferring $1000 of the TCN gift cards

That’s arguably not smart… JB Hi-Fi (or any other participating retailer) can withdraw (or be removed by TCN) from TCN gift cards at any time without warning. If you look at clause 15 of the gift card terms and conditions:

At any time we may add or remove participating retailers and/or where the Card may be redeemed and/or add or remove goods or services which may be purchased with the Card.

That explains how TCN removed the gift card exchange facility for JB Hi-Fi gift cards without any warning and without making a song and dance about it.

Jaysus. Should have just redeemed them straight away. Along with a mesh router, might have to spend the rest of the cards on overpriced google nest outdoor chargers…

          • @Vigawla: The other option is to discreetly redeem TCN gift cards for JB Hi-Fi gift cards at a JB Hi-Fi store. You can read more about it in my response to this comment, where you’ll probably also see the reason I said discreetly.

Please note that you may not be able to add physical TCN gift cards to the TCN app or exchange physical TCN gift cards for digital TCN gift cards… that is something you should check with TCN themselves to see if that is possible. If it is not possible, ignore the last two dot points in my response to the linked comment!

  • I don't understand the question… you said you cannot exchange TCN for JB gift cards… then asked about paying with TCN gift cards?

    • +1

You can no longer exchange TCN gift cards for JB Hi-Fi gift cards through the TCN website. TCN shut that down about two weeks ago without warning.

If you have EFTPOS TCN gift cards (which the OP presumably has), it means you can only directly use these gift cards in-store at JB Hi-Fi, since EFTPOS gift cards cannot be directly used for any online purchases at any participating retailer.

        Ah, gotcha. Thanks.

I cant believe people think up this complicated shit all the time… lol

    • It's quite simple. It's about ensuring purchase of a potential popular item, with the outcome of using TCN cards.

  • +1

just go in store and get them to price match when it has a price drop?
then use your TCN gift cards

    • Would love to, but as mentioned in the original post, the stock may run out by the time I can get in store.

…JB have an online sale starting tonight followed by in store sale tomorrow.

It's a bloody router, not some high-demand graphics card or something.
Go in store tomorrow morning and buy it with your gift cards.

No you're right, I'll run the risk because I can trust you.

My lord! My first forum post ever on OzBargain… What is with all the saltiness on a random internet user's random question about using gift cards?

Why waste your time? Is there nothing better for you to do than clicking into an internet forum, scoffing, and then making unhelpful, passive aggressive comments?

    Lordy lord.

By the way, truly grateful for the helpful comments.

Good… Gooooooood. Let the butthurt flow through you…

      • C'mon bro, you're on this here site as well talkin' bout KFC twisters and the makeup of lettuce and tomatoes within them.

What we are we doing here? C'mon…

Relax. I'm just messing with you. The community can be toxic at times but mostly it's pretty chill. Don't take your time here too seriously and you'll enjoy yourself more. Oh and please don't be one of those users that post about their uninsured driver stories.

As for your dilemma, I agree with the other user that the router will be unlikely to sell out. I also vaguely recall being told by an in-store JB Hi-Fi staff member that the physical stores and online stores are two separate entities so I don't think you can refund an online purchase inside. I might be remembering wrong though.

  • A related question: if I do go to the store, get them to price match and want to pay with TCN cards - is there a limit on how many I can use? I believe the highest amount they come in is $100. Can I bring 10 cards to pay for $1000 item?

    • The answer is: no, you can use as many as you wish. However, Coles will only sell you five in a day.

  • Sort of related.. but I purchased a couple of Xbox games (to trade in at EB) but by the time they were available to pick up, EB dropped the value of the games

So i returned them, and they do not give you the refund straight away. It goes to a returns team and a few days later I got a refund how I paid it (in my case, it was $40 gift card and $10 refund PayPal)

  • Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask. If I purchased something that is not yet delivered until December but with tcn gift cards, jb gift cards plus my credit card, would I be able to get a refund?

And if so how would it work with the tcn gift cards that I used? Would I need the original tcn gift card for them to give refund on or they will provide me a new card? Or I am out of luck to get any refund at all?

Hope someone can help me! Thanks!

Tried to call the number posted on top but the guy had no idea, gave me a different number for order inquiries and that closed at 6pm.

    • If you pay for the original purchase with a gift card, you will get a refund in JB gift card. Just went through that last week.

      • Ah so the amounts I used to pay in TCN gift cards will be changed to JB gift card to me? Or you mean JB gift card to JB gift card?

I am just not sure about the TCN card part of it. If that is the case and people can't convert tcn to JB online anymore, why not purchase in store and refund it into JB gift card?

        • I used JB HiFi e-gift card, got a refund in a new physical JB HiFi card. Not sure about TCN card, but I suspect you'll get refund in JB HiFi card too.
