crappy ram. cotd. alcatel, what is the support on this like?

the only plus is that it is unlocked and can take dual sims.

imo the woolies x3 is much better value at $69.

    • $69 is $30 cheaper!! :D
is that x3 dual sims as well?

    • But it's locked.

      • Can be unlocked for under $10.

unlocked for free on vodafone website

  • Price on title please.

Great deal for a dual sim phone I guess…(with Android)

  • The description talks about "Vodafone 3G 900". I could be wrong, but as far as I know there is no such thing. So Vodafone people: this is not going to work well for you, since there is no 850MHz support.
Apart from that seems like a decent phone. Nothing wrong with Alcatel. They have been around for a long time, and made many phones used in Europe.

    • I have a Desire HD on Vodafone 3G 900. Works alright, but 850 is pretty much all their improvements. I think Vodafone also use 3G 900 for country towns?

      • +1

I think you are right, they use 900 for regional, but not metro. Their "new" network is 850. Without support for 850, metro coverage is really really bad.

        • Sorry to correct again ahah, but on the desire HD, pretty much anywhere in the city I get full 3g reception :) Its just at home and surrounds the reception starts to get bad (Canning Vale).

        • I know Voda has no 850mhz in Gold Coast so it really depends where U live.. You can check all that out on their website if your curious

    • Vodafone are mostly 2100MHz in the city, the other band the phone supports.

  • Except dual sim, Huewei X3 is better phone.

  • Anybody checked the SAR value when you compare those phones?

note, it's not completely dual sim: http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/support/faq/ot-918dā€¦

only one sim can be used on 3g mode.

There are very few phones out there which support 3G on both sims. For e.g Expensive chinese shenzhen knockoffs are the only ones which would support dual 3G.

This phone is apparently "active dual sim" which means both sims are connected to the network at the same time.
Not "dual sim standy" which is a half assed version.

IMO this is a great deal, there is no other Android dual-sim capable phone on the market this cheap which also supports 3G.

      • does this mean the battery life is half as long in standby? :p

my problem would be that to switch your other sim card to 3g it seems like you will need to install it in the sim card slot. Imo it's a big failing to not provide a software switch…

        • Well, one explanation for that is that they are 2 seperate antennas and 2 seperate modems inside the phone. The 3G modem is wired to one antenna and the 2G modem is wired to another.

Thus requiring you to actually switch the SIM cards around from their respective slots. I don't know much about phones (this is just a hypothesis).

Why would you want to use both sims to access 3g? Would double your data costs.

      • +2

And eat a LOT of battery power. 1300mah is not a lot of juice for an active dual sim smartphone.

    • The phone that support two 3G sim on Android will be Samsung Galaxy Y Duos but both are only 900/2100 won't work with Telstra otherwise it will be quite cool. Good value, about $170 buy in HK, good company (Samsung) and processor is not bad speed although it does not support Flash.

      • Another big limitation of the Duos is the 320x240 pixel screen. Which wouldn't be very good for web browsing.

Dual SIM is great. Thinking of taking this with me for OS travel rather than carrying 2 phones.

  • I still reckon the best phone under $100 is LG Optimus One (P500). It's $89 at Crazy John's I think. Worth the extra $ over X3 too imo. Well worth checking out before buying anything else.

    • out of interest, why is that ?
      They're virtually identical "on paper":
      http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4528&idPhone2=ā€¦

      • twice the ram on the optimus one.

        • haven't checked but if its ram we're talking, than it's fundamental when it comes to these cheap phones

you don't want to suffer like i have, not worth the experience

        • ahh, thanks, I missed that 256MB on the Alcatel, 512 on the LG.

I'm pretty shy of LG though having bought a KC910 Renoir, software was crap and support was zero . Hopefully being Android would kind of negate that though. I'll probably just hang off and buy something better, rather than be too tight and regret it.

      • On paper specs don't always tell the full story. My wife has the LG and I am always impressed when I play around with it. It feels solid, has a nice bright screen with good sensitivity. It is pretty fast with no real lag. The camera is OK but no flash. GPS navigation is a real strong point. Loudspeaker is surprisingly loud, web browsing is quick, the whole OS works smoothly for a cheap phone compared to other cheap phones I have played around with. If you read the reviews and forums, they all praise the LG as a very good phone for the price, and I agree.

The best dual sim phone is the new Gigabyte G1355 4.3" on ebay for $279. It is an ok phone but can't justify the difference so just bought one of these. Will use a prepaid data sim with my phone plan sim so don't get hit with a huge data bill on the plan again! If you decide to buy don't forget to use code SCOOPONSPECIAL for $5 off, so total including postage is $101.90.

I have this phone. Battery life is actually decent considering it's active dual sim. It's also quite stable. The biggest negative is typing on the small screen. I have to use the old style numerical keypad because qwerty is just too small in portrait mode.

This is a great deal. I have the X3 I purchased from voda and unlocked for free. The battery sucks on the x3. Also the x3 heats up a bit during a long calls (actually from around 5 minutes).

Considering this is Dual Sim and Android 2.3.5 and unlocked, this truly is a great deal. Remember you can always use Swype for the keypad. Once you get used to it and like it, its fantastic, you wont ever use the standard touch keypad.

After agonizing for the whole night choosing between this one and the LG Optimus One ($99 from DickSmith), I decided to buy this one, mainly because of the dual sim feature. I am a bit worried because this one doesn't have a GPU, my angry birds experience will not be smooth. I hope I won't regret. Does it have any navigation software built-in or I will need to install navfree?

    • This video shows a guy playing Angry Birds briefly at around the 3 minute mark. Performance and load times are pretty poor so this phone is not likely going to be good for games.

Here is a indepth review (in Russian, no less) of the phone. Doesn't seem too bad for $99.

  • +1 for duel sim. They delivered my LG Optimus 7 in 12 days so service was ok from COTD.

  • Anyone received the mobile yet?

    • They only dispatched mine yesterday.

    • Received mine today in Brisbane.
