It's back under $900 again, for those with a good guys commercial account. Not the lowest price, but Post-Covid, is a damn good bargain. One of a few appliances that's significantly cheaper in Australia, compared to US/UK pricing.

Screenshot of Price for those wanting to claim price protection or try and price match :)

    • I tried to get the Bambino Plus (TGGC $361) price matched this week.

JB HiFi flatly refused, didn't even want to look at the ad. Had to convince the guy that TGGC isn't some corporate account, that I got it pretty easily from my super fund. I still think he didn't believe me. (I was able to price-match a Fetch box from this store earliet in the year).

TGG couldn't quite get down to the same price, but with 5% gift cards factored in, it was five dollars more and saved me a trip to a different store. And they gave me the Concierge plan with the extended warranty, and 3x$20 gift vouchers I believe.

      • Any chance of posting your receipt for price matching? For those who don't have TGGC.

      • Can you get TGGC access from Sunsuper? Or only applies to certain union?

$849 and pay with discounted 15% off Ultimate/TCN Gift cards not too long back. $750 or below is the price to buy at. This costs around $720 or so wholesale corporate pricing

    • +15

What’s the corporate wholesale price on a time machine ?

    • I think this dude had too much sugar in their coffee today and talking out if their bum

Smart Grinder for 216 is not the best price, but acceptable if you want a good grinder in one order

The pros/cons video is a roundup of the best UK machines under £1500 and this is one of his top two picks at that price, this is really good value thanks OP

  • Is this good if I only drink long blacks or espressos? Thinking it might be Overkill and better suited for latte etc

    • +1

The benefit in the dual boiler is being able to steam milk at the same time as pulling a shot, I believe. So you could probably make do with a cheaper breville machine for non milk drinks / espressos.

      • +1

The real benefit is the dedicated steam boiler is at a higher temperature than the coffee boiler so it can steam milk properly.
Steaming at the same time as brewing is not so important.

        • +1

Today I learned! That makes sense - I have a cheap Delonghi Dedica which struggles with light roasts because of a lower temp.

    • +1

The alternate view is the temp stability in this machine, more so than the dual boiler, is the real advantage over the cheaper brevilles if u like lighter roasts

    • If you’re a black-only drinker then you don’t need the dual boiler benefits unless you entertain others who are milk coffee people.

You may also save some space going for a high quality single boiler machine as the BDB is a bit of a beast. Depending on your kitchen or coffee station that may or may not be important to you :)

      • Any recommendations on high quality single boiler machine?

        • Silvia or gaggia are the staples

          • @Dtezy: Lelit Anna is also another really good option, similar price to a new Silvia.

          • @Dtezy: what put me off silvia was lack of PID temp control so it is trickier to use. i think they now have a model with the PID built in though. without it apparently you need to do something called temperature surfing. as a beginner i did t want to do that so i went for a breville.

            • @mc1: I had it too and that was the start of the upgraditis. The temp surfing was annoying but far worse when trying to steam milk as well.

Temp surfing for a black coffee isn't as bad because you can just time it when the light goes off.

        • Depends what you went and how much to spend. The Silvia is a great option, otherwise you can go an ecm or profitec single boiler. You pay for what you get basically

        • I have a few

I’m just replacing my Silvia now to a lever machine.

Silvia is a good machine but it is very temperamental

You’ll be hitting and missing for the first 20 to 30 shots before you get the hang of it

          • @YLD1: what lever machine did you get/getting?

            • +2

              @slipperypete: Olympia express Cremina

Pricey machine but found a way to get nearly 30% off

Was going to post it on ozbargain but didn’t think it’ll get any traction

              • @YLD1: ha ha I can see why! Beautiful machine but still above my pay grade

                Hope you enjoy it

    • +1

This is great for espresso, but yeah probably overkill with the dual boiler. You probably just need a Bambino.

  • +4

Ha ha i was expecting a deal on this post-black-friday! i would snap this up but want to get a year out my barista express first, and dropped this much on a niche zero already lol!

Anyway re the “aldi” comment - dont buy an espresso machine from aldi. if you cant afford a good espresso machine use an aeropress instead youll have more joy.

    • How is the niche? Seems like it would be my grinder of choice if I decide to delve into the espresso world.

      • +1

ill tell you soon, its still being shipped

  • +1

We got the barista pro at the start of the pandemic, a good machine for beginners like us. I’d leave this one as an upgrade option if you aren’t already making espresso, since you’ll need a good grinder to go with it. Personally I don’t think it makes sense to get this machine and the Breville grinder for example, since the grinder is arguably more important than the machine.

    • Why don’t you like the breville grinder with this machine?

      • +3

Just because I think technically it would make more sense to get a cheaper machine and a better grinder. I think that as long as you aren’t using pressurised baskets, the grind is probably more important than the machine (others can weigh in on this, like I said we are beginners)

That said, the dual boiler is pretty cool and you could always just upgrade the grinder if you felt you wanted to get more out of the machine later on. The timer function on the smart grinder is also good if you know you aren’t going to bother weighing anything. Also, at least if they’re separate you can give your old grinder to a friend or something.

This is a great price, been watching this for a while.

Check out James Hoffman's video where he compares it to $3K - $5K machines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0kQ5WqjcU8&t=905s&ab_channe…

You can also mod it to make it similar to a $5K machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmQgxQ5Higw&ab_channel=Lance…

    • Except the 5k machine is gonna last 10 years and this might last 2.

*as I use my 12yr rocket

      • I’ve had 7 years out of my BDB, it’s finally starting to show a bit of age so I’ve upgraded to a Rocket R Cinq which I am hoping with a yearly service should last 15-20 years easy ( except maybe the PID). For an appliance I think this is the best machine on the market especially for a beginner who is looking to experiment without being too overwhelmed, that being said it is not a good looking machine and I do find it to be noisy and can’t be plumbed in out of the box.

        • Nice, yeah its usually the electrics that screw up first. With the rockets etc it's easy to to find parts to service, gaskets pumps etc.. and there's not much to them other than that. If you descale regularly I can't see them not last 10+ yrs.

      • +1

Says the owner trying to justify the large price difference.
Maintain the Breville as you would a Rocket and it will last as long. Parts are cheap and easy to come by.

        • They are not really aimed at the same market, the BDB does have its issues especially around the descale ( Not sure if this got fixed on the newer models but for the older ones I wouldn’t descale) , solenoid vibrations and sometimes the preinfusion can get a little tempermental.
I always recommend the BDB for anyone who either wants to get into coffee half seriously or if you are on a budget and are prepared to play around with a few easy mods.
That said I wouldn’t expect a factory rolled out complex appliance at this price level to last anywhere near as long as a hand assembled machine using time tested simple parts. Servicing is not cheap and if I serviced the BDB once a year over the last 7 years It probably would of added up to more than a new one.

    • -1

also the BDB looks heaps better than most $5k machines

  • +1

My one lasted less than 3 years. Started to leak and wouldn't heat up.

    • +1

This is my concern and the only thing stopping me from biting the bullet, I keep reading stories about the long term unreliability of these.

What would be the next step up outside of the Breville product line? I see the rocket mentioned a bit but is there something more appropriate in between?

      • +2

If you maintain it with regular leak surveillance, o ring changes, and good water, then these things should last and are relatively easy to maintain without resorting to expensive servicing, the pump and solenoid, for example, are easily available online. If you buy these and use untested tap water and ignore hissing etc then of course they will fail, just like expensive prosumer Italian machines will when treated like this.

      • Have the bdb for a good 3/4 years now, so far only had to change the shower screen but keeping up with maintenance. Did get the extended coverage so hope it lasts pass the 5th year maybe my excuse to upgrade to a rocket

      • probably a dual boiler silvia. But there isn't a lot i can think that sit between which i guess is why the BDB is great value.

      • I don't have the BDB but I do have the smart grinder. Longevity isn't great, but breville customer service is. Every two years the grinder dies, I call breville and they send a new one no questions asked.

Just thought that might be useful info for your decision.

  • Not sure to buy this plus the smart grinder or just go with the Oracle.

    • +2

dont get the integrated like someone else said the grinder is probably more important than the machine.

    • Depends how into coffee you are, if you really want to dial in espresso well, the grinder on the Oracle is going to annoy the hell out of you. If you don't really care all that much about getting your espresso perfect and you are really keen on self frothing milk, then go the Oracle.

  • Will it make a good cappuccino?

    • No. But you might be able to make one yourself using the BES920. It isn't THAT automatic!

  • I don’t have TGG Commercial access. How much is a BES980 on the site?

    • 1585

  • Any grinder recommendations?

    • +2

For this machine minimum is the Breville Smart Grinder, any less and the money spent on the machine is wasted.

Next step up would be something like the Eureka Mignon Specialita and a lot of people pair these machines with a Niche Zero or DF64.

      • Thanks the advice, how does Baratza 270 compare to Eureka Mignon Specialita?

        • +1

Both are good and have their pros and cons, probably best to spend some time on Google to find out which ones has the characteristics that are important to you

        • +1

The 270 is loud AF. I knew about this but after only a few months it got to me. I measured 85db ish with my phone.
I just got the specialita today. It’s about 74db and much more bearable.
Both used as single dose grinders and retention is very minimal - 0 to 0.2

  • Good guys concierge worth it for when the machine needs a service/breaks down at the 2-3 year mark?

  • Can anyone confirm if this price is still current on Good Guys Commercial? Cheers!

    • +1

      Yep still $897.

      • Awesome thanks mate!

      • And local good guys matched the price, no problem.

  • Any recommendations for a bottomless portafilter to go with this?

    • You can get the bottomless portafilter handle from Amazon (original Breville or after market). use your existing basket or buy a VST
