AR300M(Shadow) vs MT300N-V2(Mango)

  • AR300M is based on an Atheros SOC while the MT300N-V2 is based on Mediatek SOC. This makes the AR slightly more flexible if you are wanting to muck around with say compiling your own firmwares and adding functionality. More "DIYer/industrial" focus.

  • AR also includes both NOR and NAND memory so theoretically you can have two different firmwares and/or a fall back firmware. Because of this on the AR300 you can run the current testing AdGuardhome firmware (in NAND) which you can't on the Mango.

It also has slightly faster VPN performance than the Mango.

  • MT300NV2
    45/11 (Wireguard/OpenVPN based on Gl.iNet data)

  • AR300M
50/15 (Wireguard/OpenVPN based on GL. INET data)

Physically exactly the same size and power requirements (5V/1A)

Great device. Use it as a cheap repeater in a single room without wifi. Also awesome when travelling in hotels/hotspots to give access to your devices and Chromecast.

  • So this acts as a NAT gateway when joining a VPN?

i used one to hook the lan port on security camera system to wireless internet and works a treat

  • Do I still need to pay for / have a subscription to a VPN service?
Or will the VPN function of this router work without?

    • +1

      Depends what you're doing.

You can connect to a VPN service with it (still have to pay, although there's free options; proton/windscribe etc)

Or you can set it up as your own vpn to connect to when you're away from home.

      • @sktzr - very interested in the "set it up as your own vpn". Can you elaborate ? Many thanks

You can set it up as a VPN server to connect to your network from your phone etc while away from home

  • any real difference between this and the GL.iNET GL-MT300N-V2

  • Do these run a mainline kernel?

  • Thanks, was looking into those a little while ago, was able to snatch one.

What about this one for $32.31 (with 10% voucher)? Is this the same? Now that that one has gone out of stock.

    • Refer to the Questions and Answers section of the listing. Someone said that this one you linked is superseded by the one OP posted, which is newer and has 128MB Nand Flash with larger memory space therefore allowing for different applications to be installed to support extended development, whatever that means? :-)
