NAB Gold Banking debit card discontinued

As the title says NAB are doing away with their Gold Banking account that has the visa debit card - was great for traveling. From their website:

The NAB Gold Banking account is no longer for sale on a standalone basis effective 23 April 2012. From 8 June 2012, NAB Choice Package customers cannot ask for their NAB Gold Banking account to be included as part of the package. These changes do not apply to NAB Private Tailored Package customers.

Was a good card while it lasted - 28degrees card here I come :(

  • Maybe a better one is to come? .. and the citibank plus transaction account is effective the same/better than NAB gold? as discussed here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61969

  • Yes. Existing card holders can still pay 'no foreign exchange fee' until 10 Aug.

I have Citibank Plus already but also have a NAB Gold Banking as a backup. Although this rarely happens, it can be very frustration if you have no access to cash from ATM while overseas due to e.g. a broken Citibank card, etc.

  • I agree the Citibank Plus account is about as good as the NAB Gold Banking account, but I don't know if it offers the same level of complimentary travel insurance, extended warranty, etc.

  • Quick question… Last time I checked when the banks don't charge a FX exchange fee on their cards, the rate they use to convert it was very different from the rate that they would of used if they charged you a FX exchange fee. It seems to hold true now, however I can't check as I don't have a 28 Degrees or a Gold Banking account nor a Citibank account now. Is it possible that someone checks? I can only theoretically check based on this site:

    http://corporate.visa.com/pd/consumer_services/consumer_ex_r…

It would be great to know if I need to pickup one of these accounts.

    Thanks.

      Visa Site
      $USD = $AUD 0.954558
      Mastercard Site
      $USD1 - $AUD 0.959049
      28 Degrees (MC) actual rate
      $AUD 0.957950

      So that's pretty close

  • Well the nab gold banking one gives a good 'spot' rate so not a generally lower one to make up for the lack of fee. Dunno about other cards though.

Oh and I don't think nab will replace this with something equivalent or better ;)

  • what about bankwest platinum credit cards they now offer no foreign exchange fees but is there rate any better? at least you have free insurance.

    • The Bankwest Platinum card with no annual fee charges a flat $4 fee if you try a foreign cash withdrawal (even if your card is in credit). 28 Degrees does not charge this fee if the card is in credit.

      28 degrees is therefore superior.
