    " Teah, Teah, Teah, Minolta 7000 blahblahblah……''

  • It’s a decent lens but large and inconvenient… I traded it for the Sony 200-600 at double the price,
Which is just slightly easier to carry and handle, but makes the difference of whether it’ll fit in my kit bag or not

    • Isn't the Sony 200-600 an even bigger lens? This is about half the size when zoomed out and still shorter when fully extended. The Sony though is thought to have better water and dust proofing since it has an internal zoom design.

      • Apologies, I think I made a mistake… that I was referring to the sigma sport lens I owned, which is definitely bigger, the Sony however manages to match its IQ from my experiences but offer a little bit better or lighter package.

        • Yeah the Sony 200-600mm is also very good and would be about $400 more with more range and 1/3 stop faster (?).

          • @Davesday: 200-600 only $400 more? Would snap one up at that price point

@schnackysmores: I was counting from Tamron's standard RRP vs Digidirect's current sale price of $2,300 LOL! But seriously for the difference in cost and the fact that Tamron has been releasing optically good lenses for the Sony FE, I would just go with the Tamron. Maybe there's a perception that first party lenses are always better. I have been using Tamron lenses when I got into Sony full frame and the quality is seriously good. AF is plenty fast and supports EyeAF. Completely different from the older days of Tamron where it was just one or steps behind.

          • @Davesday: In summary it just handles better, it’s a little bit shorter, a bit lighter as compared to the sport lens. All in all it’s less of a sore back to work with shooting it

            • @[Deactivated]: Pretty much it! I think it is the perfect super telephoto lens for amateur photographers.

  • Small aperture makes this pretty useless indoors. What do people use a lens like this for? Bird or outdoor sports photography? (I'm thinking focusing and possibly aperture would be too slow for that.)

No way is it too slow. I use a Panasonic GX85 with horrendously slow AF compared to the latest Sony cameras, and an Olympus 75-300mm at f7.1 (note, this gives a DOF equivalent to f14 on full-frame), and I can still shoot birds in flight. I’ve gotten heaps of decent wildlife shots with this setup. Obviously I need to process the RAW files to get better detail and lower noise levels.

    • Pretty much bird and outdoor photography. Aperture is not going to be fast enough for sports unless there is a good amount of light and you're ok with higher ISO. But at 500mm this is about the fastest lens you can get and it is on par with first party and other lens with the same zoom range. 70-200mm F2.8 don't count because you won't get the reach either. The AF on this lens is super fast so that is going to be helpful.

If you're doing wildlife and don't have $15k for a 600mm f/4, this is the next best thing.
