My lightbulb suddenly started dropping from the ceiling and now won't stay in the socket!

Late last night my lightbulb randomly dropped from its socket in the ceiling and now it won't stay in its socket. Before anyone asks - yes I know how to change a lightbulb and have just done a test in another room.

I've tried:
Switching to the same lightbulb from another room - so there's no issue with either lightbulbs.
The fallen lightbulb fits just fine in a different room - so it seems like there's something wrong with the socket.

The lightbulb is a bayonet type, so you push the two lugs into the plastic socket and twist but there seems be some sort of spring at the back of the socket that is pushing the bulb back out - anyone know what that is???

Strangely, my ceiling fan/aircon also decided to die in the same day - evaporative cooler not draining or something so unsure if it's related.

Anyone have suggestions?

Call Ghostbusters. Or call an electrician?

Photos might help if you want someone here to try and diagnose, but DIY work relating to electricity is technically illegal.

    • My thought exactly before I saw your post. Call Ghostbusters.

Maybe you just had a great idea

It is how the bulb holder is constructed.
I think you might have to change the holder by calling an electrician, there are two openings in the holder where the two small pins in the bulb locks into which could be expanded (heat, fatigue due to usage etc). Specially some light bulbs got shorter pins than other. So, you might be able to still use a bulb from another model/brand.

Don't play with electricity anyway. Call an electrician.

Yeah that's what I was thinking

The slots on the light fitting that hold the pins of the bulb is damaged/broken and doesn't stop the bulb from dropping out of the socket.

The slots are up the top of the fitting in this image

  • Possibly the connector that holds the bulb has corroded happened to me with a bedside lamp

  • Aliens???

  • Anyone have suggestions?

Time for a light fitting and ceiling fan upgrade! :)

  • If it's a bayonet (push and twist in) type, the plastic that holds they bulb in is likely cracked/broken in the bayonet fitting.

  • Ask Casper.
