People's Choice Credit Union Cards Hacked 19/01/2022

People with People's Choice Credit Union has recently been hacked

Information I know is that it's a batch hack and to pre authorise purchases on Amazon

If you have one of these cards. Check your account and you might be getting a call soon from People

Edit: I got a phone call from a rep

Edit: No I didn't get scammed. I got a call from them telling me they will be cancelling and re-issuing my card. A scammer wouldn't cancel any cards.

Edit: They called from https://www.reverseaustralia.com/lookup/0282999534/ and had all my details and said they were going to cancel card number ending XXXX and said it has been comprised and asked if I had purchases XXX on XXX time

Edit: There's no money in the account for those curious. I just signed up for https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/637329 and cashed out

Where are the news posts indicating hack/breach? Link to post(s) please.

    • I don't think they want to do that

      • THE CREDIT UNION WAS NOT HACKED as there are no news articles and OP cannot supply info to back up the claim.

Looks more like OP was scammed or the card was compromised somehow by hackers using a brute force attack and the bank may have called. as posted below it could be a bin attach as explained on the https://www.westpac.co.nz/rednews/bin-attack-fraud-what-it-i… page.

hacked is easier to understand than BIN attacks

    • I got a phone call from them and they cancelled my card… how can I back that up?

      • it wasnt the credit union that called…

        • +2

No way, OP had to confirm personal details to cancel card. A scammer would never do that.

          Wait

          • @avoidfullprice: And no news posts or any info on the net….

Wait for the I have been hacked as my credit card has unauthorized amounts, so the credit union was hacked… It was not scammed as I know better…

          • @avoidfullprice: lol I didn't confirm any details they knew everything

      Ask them on twitter :)

    • +1

It doesn't look like they use their Twitter for much other than very occasional marketing.

  • Is this only credit cards or is it all their cards?

    • You have one? Better check

  • Edit: I got a phone call from a rep

    Scammed?

    Maybe this - an outage.

That article is 364 days old

      • Oops. Sorry about that.

      • +3

Are they back on line now?

        • they haven't stopped anything they are just calling some customers that have been affected

  • +2

Peoples Choice Credit Union's web site has an alerts page for stuff like this.

And there's nothing on it to support the OP's claim.

The OP should be asking himself whether he got scammed.

  • +2

Did the caller ask you any details regarding the card? Did you have to answer their security questions?

It’s starting to sound more like OP got phished.

    • +1

OP username will check out soon

    • they said they are going to cancel card number ending XXXX as it has been compromised

Only question they asked if I had go on XXX website at XXX time and I said no

Card cancelled and reissued that was it

      • +1

Sounds like a phishing scam that failed then they tell you they reissue the card so you won't be alarmed

        • +1

Not likely to be a phishing scam if they only got “no” out of the interaction. It’s more likely the card was compromised by someone attacking BIN ranges and ran a charge through a generated card #. These things happen without the bank or the customer being at fault. It’s how insecure the CC system is by design.

Westpac explains it here - https://www.westpac.co.nz/rednews/bin-attack-fraud-what-it-i…

          • @kipps: I got hit with with this years ago when I spotted a USD 1c change for a US purchase and rang the bank straight away and they cancelled the card and re-issued it. I called the bank using their published number of their web site!!!
