    waiving charges

    too soon

Is the communication is back up now in Tonga?

    • +6

There's a satellite link established as an interim solution. It's mentioned in the deal link…

We’ve worked alongside the Australian Government to get the first batch of satellite equipment shipped on an RAAF flight, which has arrived and another shipment is on the way. This has helped the Digicel Tonga team start to progressively restore services, which is why we’re now able to offer free calls.

      • -1

That satellite link is gonna get saturated thanks to this deal

Free Calls to Tonga @ Telstra

Not worth ther risk of them actually billing you for them and then spending 3-4 hours on chat to get your money back…

    • +1

      Classical jv hehe :)

Anyway I think Telstra did it due diligence of how many people live in Tonga and those with communication . Which I believe most is still down there still .

    • +6

Its not worth the risk if you had no one to you needed to call…. If this deal actually applies to you, this deal would probably be great regardless…. (Aka family members you would be calling anyway)

Nobody is asking you to pull out the Tongan phone book and call random ppl…. They likely have more pressing concerns….

      • -5

        and call random ppl…

        I wasn't considering calling random people, that's why I asked for a recommendation above…
I'd love to make new friends there…

        • +7

You've got enough here - you and your imaginary friend.

  • Thought it was already free, what about somoa

    • I don’t think that’s a place..

Maybe you meant Moana from Samoa?

  • +10

Free calls to Ukraine soon too

in terms of hot chicks or free calls

        • +1

          yes

      • Did Telstra offer free calls to hk?

      • How would you know? You can only go by their voice.

    • cursed_phonecall

  • Same with Vodafone and TPG

Let the telephone pranks begin 😈😈😈👿👿👿👿

      Hi is your water running?

Oh, I'm very sorry to hear that. Hope they restore services soon.

      • -3

Hi is your cold water running?

        • What a childish comment to make given the current situation.
Jokes like this may have been okay in the 1950's but not today.

      • +8

Don’t find anything funny, given the conditions those people are suffering from atm

    • If you think that's funny you should take a long hard look at yourself.

[Scene opens at Moe's Tavern Nuku'alofa, Tonga]

Moe: [answers phone] "Hello? Moe's Tavern"

Bart: "Yeah, hi mister. I really need to speak to my mum. Last name Narmy. First name Susan. It's kind of important"

Moe: "One moment kid" [moves phone] "Hey everyone….I got an urgent call for Sue Narmy. Anyone seen Sue Narmy? This is important….come on…."

    [bar empties of customers]

Moe: "Hey - where are you all going? Come back here!"

    Bart: [laughter]

Moe: "Why it's you, isn't it, you cowardly little runt? When I get a hold of you, I'm gonna gut you like a fish and drink your blood!"

Anyway it was nice of Telstra to offer this for the next 7 days knowing most the the communications are down for weeks/months .
I hope they get the good PR they are after .

  • +2

Apparently normally calls to Tonga are hella expensive (Amaysim showing $2 per min vs 10c/min to China). Any idea why international calls to some parts of the world (China, US, UK India etc) are much cheaper compared to others?

I think i read something about there only being one cable that connects Tonga to Asia-pacific via Fiji, or something

  • -2

I'm a little puzzled by the lack of explanation in the media.

First they say the undersea cable is broken because it ran too near the volcano, so all communications are down for at least a month until a repair ship can get there, drag it up, and patch it. And the only calls getting through are to satellite phones at the Tonga end.

Then suddenly, within days, phone calls are getting through.

Is there a new (2018) optic fibre cable for internet connections from Fiji to Tonga that's broken, but still the old multi-wire telephone cable that is undamaged, but the equipment where it came onto land at the Tonga end took a couple of days to get working again after the tsunami?

    • +2

They're obviously using coconuts and string.

When the chips are down, go low tech - that's what mum always said.

Chief says just use the cone of silence.

    • The answer to your question is literally explained in the deal link.

  • -1

i hope Jonah from Tonga is ok

  • -2

Free calls to Tonga …. asked nobody ……. But i guess you are the 1 person out of 30 million that knows someone there, free calls for you

  • -2

Time to fire up the prank calls
