Decent Budget Travel Insurance to Australia for Overseas Travellers

Hi All,

This can be a bit new to most of us since we ought to know about the travel insurance for overseas but my Mom is travelling to Australia for around 3 months and have to have a medical/travel insurance.

I have been comparing all the insurance but they all look sponsored in a way.

Want to know what fellow Australians are going to, for this purpose.

Thanks in advance.

From where? Australia has reciprocal Medicare with certain countries.

Sorry clarify what "looking sponsored" means for insurance?

I can't speak for everyone, but I imagine most people here have credit cards with included travel insurance. Did your Mom book the flights with a credit card? Most "Gold" cards and above have included insurance.

Only companies who are paying those comparing sites, are listed and being compared!

I do have CC with insurance included (Westpac Altitude Black) but would that apply to my Mom's travel as well (She is travelling from India)? thanks for your time.

Ah, I was more thinking if your mum had one - not sure if your CC would cover her even if you paid for it, ones that I have only cover "travelling companions" (i.e. you would have to be on the same trip as your mum).

I think holdenmg below has hit the nail on the head though - a company with offices in her home country would help since they'd speak the language and have more resources to co-ordinate evacuation back home if needed.

We used Travel Insurance Direct. Good company with good reviews it seemed.

  • The first thing to check is whether you can find a travel insurance company that covers somebody for a 3 month trip.

    • Thanks for sharing, heard good things about this one, did you happen to use it, how's the claiming process?

AIG is Global, but she will have contacts and support in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata should there be a claim before or after. Local support in Australia while your Mom is here. Recommend.

  • This may be a stupid question, but does anyone get insurance when holidaying in their own state? We're going to KI (and live in SA), and I guess because technically we're travelling over water I feel like it's a different destination, but health/car insurance will cover me, more thinking about the loss of property or accommodation issues.

If your mom is not a permanent resident or citizen of Australia (in which case she would be eligible for Medicare anyways) she needs to get travel insurance from an Indian insurance provider. The Aussie ones are only for Australian residents going overseas.
In Europe for example you can get an annual multi trip travel insurance (some with medical cover only) for less than $10. I was shocked when seeing the Australian travel insurance premiums.
