  • Be aware that europe is close to or has banned the sale of Plasma screens.

They run hot, use heaps [truckloads] more power than lcd etc screens.

They do not last as long as lcd or led screens.

Pioneer in japan has stopped making plasma screens.

The cost of the power consumed per year will make your eyes water.

And they cause interference to other electronic devices.

Australia has become a dumping ground for these substandard, wallet wrecking things.

    • Plasma TV's do use more power and do run hotter than LCD screens.

However, Plasma has been cheaper than LCD/LED TV's of equivelant size for some time. I recall a few people (not just one) calculating last year that, to make up that cost difference, you would need run both TV's 24 x 7 for a long time (I can't recall exactly but it was in the vicinity of 8-10 years 24 x 7). This was for 50" screens. I believe larger Plasma screens comparatively use significantly more power (last I read, which was a while ago).

This may no longer be correct due to the recent (last 6 to 8 months) electricity price increases, TV pricing changes and possible energy efficiency improvements to TV technologies, so please check.

Regarding Plasma TV's having a shorter life span, I'd love to see what you base that comment on. I have a Pioneer Plasma that's almost 10 years old now and still going strong. I understand that the latest generation of Plasmas should be able to last 27 years if watched 10 hours per day (this is when they purportedly reach half their maximum brightness).

Pioneer stopped making Plasmas because their Kuro technology was too expensive to manufacture. They ceased manufacturing in 2009 (I think), but to this day are considered the benchmark by which all other TV's are compared.

On this note, I and many others consider the picture quality of Plasmas to be supeior to LED/LCD TV's (except for true LED TV's, but that's for another post). Because they do not use a backlight, Plasma's blacks are deeper. Also, they have better viewing angles (as they do not need to contend with the LCD pixel substrcture), are better at displaying motion (i.e. gray to gray response times) and produce more natural (i.e. not oversaturated) colours. That last one is somewhat contentious.

LCD/LED's tend to produce better whites and are generally better for animation. Also, beacuse they can go brighter, they are considered more suitable for day time viewing.

Plasmas do cause lectrical interference, as do many otehr electronics. I don't think LCD/LED TV's do however.

Plasma TV's are not substandard wallet wrecking products. Neither are LED/LCD TV's. People should buy with knowledge of what is available to them and not on the basis of the ignorance and misinformation spread by salesmen or anyone else.

  • Hi grog, thanks a lot for the head up, i just check the spec, the power voltage for this plasma is 350watt, do you think it is good enough for plasma??

  • Hi Andyken,

grog's comment aside - these Samsung Factory 2nd TVs are selling like there is no tomorrow and we will have to remove it from the website shortly due to diminishing stock levels.

    • FYI, the last one just sold.

      • oo..too bad, i just sent an email reg. the question of the item and if i paid by today when i can received the item plus asking about direct deposit instead of cc payment, but its sold :( any chance you still have a stock?

  • I asked an electrical engineer i know who has 30 years experience about this and he investigated a very large plasma and he was "in shock" at the amount of electricity used compared to LCD / LED.

Whenever i see him he is still shaking his head about the figures.

Just be aware of the facts when you are shopping for a plasma screen.

Not all lcd/led screens of the same size are rated the same either.

This page [USA prices] has more info. [ there is probably much more info available as well on the net]

why do people fark around for?

  • I have this TV and its truly great.

Can play movies and display 3D photos from USB, huge bunch of connectors on the back.

As for the power… well lets say it costs maybe 50¢ an hour to run. Much cheaper than going to Hoyts and you can have a beer while watching a movie. Perhaps the people who complain about the power also have swimming pools with pumps that run 6 or 8 hours a day.

EDIT: this page http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-ps51d550-201109221412… says it uses 212W in 2D and 282W in 3D mode.
