LoL PCR test in Phuket was like $140aud . On landing there they test U and U isolate in your pre-booked hotel. Good thing Oz now only requires a rat test

    • +3

RAT must be in front of a doctor so you have to pay for that consult too.

      • -4

Not in Vic. You just have to self report within 24 hours of arrival, then again between day 5 and 7. Not sure if that's changed since I arrived back from a Singapore trip early Jan.

      • Where did U read that? Not in Vic at all. Self reporting req

        • +3

Slef reporting for tests on arrival. Still need neg pcr or supervised rat to board the plane

          • @chocfrogs456: came back from a trip early jan before that news/update. We couldn't find details beforehand and even call to the hotline were saying just do a RAT test 24hrs before coming in (they never told us under supervision of medical practitioner. Obviously this advise has been cleared out.).. We were just told a neg RAT or PCR will be required to enter. We had RAT kits with us.. but since we had prebooked PCR we had that done instead.

      • -1

If you do happen to come across a RAT, try not to Phuket.

        • +1

          everyone's a comedian

          • @191919: Yeah I think that's why I was just trying to fit in and I almost felt bad about the downvotes but then thought Phuket.

  • +23

See the problem with Jetstar is that it is never that price. Add bags, seats, perhaps a dodgy meal and booking fees and whoosh you add another $150. And they always show the DWN - DPS flight to suck you in. Then you click in and say oh Darwin.
Anyway I have whinged enough, not a bad price hopefully they do away with the 5 day quarantine soon

    • +20

Don’t add bags, don’t add seats, don’t order a dodgy meal, and avoid booking fees. Collect another OzBargain badge as you board!

      • +2

Kids, wife etc etc. However I will keep my badge good sir as I am a credit card churner and collect points which equals flights. Just waiting to use them on full service airlines e.g SQ

        • DWN - DPS

          ?

          SQ?\?

          • @capslock janitor: Lol, yes the 2 together don't make sense. I'm in BNE , just mearly pointing out I have collected a lot of points with SQ. When travelling to DPS I have gone with Virgin and the 2 company's were pretty good with points transfers.

        • Easiest way to keep the OzB badge, is to pair up (or marry) with another OzB badge ^_^

        • business trip. also chances are you get free hotel discount on first day with jetstar plus extra points from the free hotel booking. Bring some snacks on the plane if they are allowed anymore, water they use to fill up for you.

      • +2

So you live out of carry on for weeks overseas?

        • +4

          This is the way.

        • +2

          Singha singlets for days

        • -1

They are probably a FIFO, single and buy extra clothes when they arrive to meet their temporary friendship partner

        • +1

So you live out of carry on for weeks overseas?

I have a Qantas approved 40l backpack which fits 5 pairs of shorts, undies, and tshirts, along with toiletries etc. What else do you need? Unless you're going somewhere below 15deg this is all the clothes you need.

    • +4

Took the first half of my $70 Sydney <-> Melbourne jetstar flight today.

The random* assignment put me in the middle seat, all 6'5" of me, but I'll be damned if I was going to pay another cent!

(*) basing this off absolutely nothing, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if the random assignment is weighted towards giving you terrible seats to encourage upgrades. The jokes on them, though, the aisle seat next to me was empty! and quickly swipped by yours truely.

      • -5

The seats that are left unallocated are unallocated because people are not willing to pay for them, for either perceived or real negatives (eg. middle seat). They are 'weighted' to terrible seats only because other seats are literally more favorable and thus people choose to pay to reserve them.

not rocket science. no algorithms, dark patterns or manipulation required.

      • +1

I'm only 6'2 but window/middle row as a taller person is hell. No knee wiggle room and when the person in front of you inevitably puts their seat back, you're doomed for uncomfort for the rest of the flight.

    • +3

Why the heck would you add bags for a week in SE Asia?
Few shirts, few shorts, some undies. All under 7kg easy.

      • +2

Can probably live without undies in SE Asia easy…

        .

        • This guy Asia!

Glad I'm not the only one. It's humid as hell and nobody likes steamed nuts!

      • I'm not a solo traveller anymore, but nor do I fly jetstar international.

      • Why the heck would you add bags for a week in SE Asia?

Or anywhere that is warm. My last European trip was 5 weeks and I managed that with carry on only.

        • +2

I have noticed that some people can't tell when they are a bit whiffy ;)

          • +1

            @soob:

I have noticed that some people can't tell when they are a bit whiffy ;)

They do have showers and laundries in other countries too…

    • I got flights DRW - DPS for $158 return. Who brings check baggage to Bali. Duffle bag does me. 3 singlets, 1 pair of volleys, 2 pairs of thongs (in case of a blow out) and a couple shorts. Maybe slacks and a nice shirt if I want to go somewhere nice.

Its a 2.5hr flight. You don't need a meal or pick a seat.

I do agree this 5 day hotel isolation is ridiculous. People travel to Bali 5-7 days at most. Hope they get rid of it and be like Thailand / Philippines.

    • See the problem with Jetstar is that it is never that price. Add bags, seats, perhaps a dodgy meal and…

So don't do that and it is that price. If you are traveling somewhere warm there is no need for anything more than carry on.
I can't remember the last time I checked in a bag. Don't whinge to us because YOU can't work out how to maximise a bargain.

    • +1

Dude every trip ever. Backpack, shorts and singlets. For a week it's all you need. Nothing else required easy as!

  • +10

Thanks for sharing. Love seeing the flight deals popping back up. Excited for when everyone ditched quarantine!

    • +6

Your enthusiasm and positivity has upset someone 😂 people are so eager to neg. It's almost like the only way some people feel better about their lives. I have neutralised one downvote.

      • +3

Haha guessing these dudes don’t like holidays? Or hate planes? Maybe they made a wrong turn on the internet and hate bargains?

  • Too bad you need to quarantine in Indonesia for 2 weeks.

Is there some way around that?

    • +7

Too bad you need to quarantine in Indonesia for 2 weeks.

Then you come home after a relaxing 2 week break.

Is there some way around that?

      Go to another country

    • Phuket is only ~4-6h quarantine

      • +2

You have to quarantine atleast twice now if you enter Thailand under the new Test and Go model.

Sandbox model should be the single quarantine period, bit you have to stay in the same hotel for the first week and have a nightly curfew.

Add in the risk of being fleeced if you test positive or sit next to someone on the plane who does and it's simply not worth travelling to Thailand at the moment for just a holiday.

        • You have to wait pcr test result in the hotel after arriving. It takes 4-6hrs. After that you are free to go anywhere in Phuket

There are lots of risks - flight can be cancelled, you can not receive thai-pass before departure date, you have to do 3 pcr test in one week and any of these can be positive, etc

          • +2

@rwt: The new Test and Go model as far as I was aware requires you to quarantine again in a hotel after the Day 5 PCR. That could take longer than 4-6 hours.

From what I've read in FB groups, it sounds like they've gotten fussier too with the documentation they'll accept in the Thai Pass application.

It's a lot simpler to simply not travel to Thailand for a holiday whilst they want to put so many barriers in place.

      • +4

False positive scams forcing 2 weeks hospital quarantine I've been told in Phuket

        • Not exactly a scam but they are just using different cycles for their PCR tests.

Thailand uses cycles of up to 40 whilst other countries might only use only up to 25.

A PCR test is basically amplifying the samples. So if you some virus detected - could be dead or could be small trace amounts (but maybe not enough to be infectious), it'll still detect you as positive, while you may test negative in Australia.

There's a lot of people who have had prior infection getting positive again in Thailand as their tests are really sensitive. If you've had a prior infection, I would highly recommend obtaining a medical cert or covid recovery cert prior to flying to Thailand - as the risk of testing positive even 1-2 month after infection is very real.

          • +1

@plasmoske: Yes it's a scam they want you to prolong your trip and make money….
People boarding planes negative only to be told on arrival they are positive forcing accommodation cancellations, tour cancellations with no refunds and having to re-book everything again…..
Yes I'm aware of PCR testing picking up old virus fragments but that's exactly why they're doing it..
My advice..don't travel to Thailand in 2022 unless you got money to burn and a lot of patience

            • @[Deactivated]: It's not a scam but yes it's borderline scammy.

They have not many tourists coming so trying to drain as much money as they can from insurance/tourists.

        • News from Pattaya.

Bar girls asking for negative RAT test to join you. However, condoms are optional.

          Go figure!

    • Literally 5 days in Bali.

      • 4 nights 5 days. Day of arrival is day 1 irregardless of time of arrival.

        .

    • +1

5 days but it’s super risky. If you or anyone you’re with tests positive you could be in for a lengthy visit and lots of problems. Nothing the indo govt does is very user friendly in my experience.

Just not worth it for a holiday IMO

    • +1

Hey a friend of mine went to Bali via Jakarta, the local officials were asking for a bribe to let you through without quarantine in a hotel. So there's an option not to quarantine.

      • It's only 4 nights, not worth doing.

        .

        • Worth it if you only have a week off.

        • It's only 4 nights, not worth doing.

How is 4 less than 0? If the bribe is the same as the old customs bypass bribe of $25 then it is definitely worth it.

    • Bali has travel bubble for fully vaxxed tourists, 5 days isolation only.
still be mindful tho, as they can play around with PCR test result.

    • It is 5 days now

You can't reason with these people. ScIeNcE has become a new cult, they have no understanding of the scientific method, freedom of inquiry, evidence based decision making, verifiability and falsifiability etc they just parrot what the talking head on TV told them was ScIeNcE and will happily send people to concentration camps to avoid having to think for themselves.

I saw that the visa costs $400 per person to Bali / Indonesia (https://bali.com/visit-bali-during-covid-offshore-e-visa/)

A very expensive expense if a family is going.

    • -1

That's a 3rd party service, so you're paying extra. Looks a bit like a scam to me.

    • -1

Shouldn’t be near that much. I smell a scam / inflated 3rd party processing service.

    • -1

Single visa is about $50 usd

      • +2

        Not any longer.

The $35 VOA or Free 30 Day Visa Exemption has been suspended for the duration of the pandemic.

The only visa available is $A 370 through an Indonesian agent.

Factor in $A700 for five days in a Quarantine Hotel.

Add $A370 for four PCR tests and $A12 for a RAT.

        • -2

          $80

Make an apointment if you're in Melb or use the mail in. Sure, not as cheap as it used to be, but it's not near $400

          https://kemlu.go.id/melbourne/en/pages/tourist_visa/1134/etc…

          Unless I'm missing something?

          • +1

@ChickenTalon: You keep quoting Indonesian visa arrangements from August 2019.

Since then the world has changed, something called a pandemic happened.

Indonesia has suspended VOA, Free 30 Day Visa Exemption and SocBud from Indonesian Embassies and Consulates for the duration of the pandemic.

            • +1

@klrrider1: Fair enough, I see that you do indeed need a local "sponsor" now. Which would be someone like the Bali.com company.

  • I would be careful of going to any third world countries. I have relatives staying in Bangkok saying that the crime rate is very high as lots are unemployed given how dependant the economy is on tourists. Knife point robbery is very rampant, especially if you are travelling alone.

    • +1

This is a good point actually. I feel sorry for people in Bali/Thailand as they are relying on tourism and when people are desperate, they do desperate things.

      Rampant? Wow, that's scaremongering.

We just spent a month in Thailand and felt no issues at all, but then again, we've been to Thailand a dozen or so times and as long as you are sensible it is unlikely anything will happen.

I mean, if you sat with your laptop at a park in the middle of the night in Sydney (like some uni students have been seen doing video-chatting with family overseas), I bet you would be losing your laptop, your phone and a wallet.

        Same here.
Just returned from Thai last week, no any issue

That's how it is these days. Fear! Fear! Fear! Be afraid! Did you know that unless you wear a mask and gloves alone inside your car while driving YOU WILL DIE!!!

        • The irony of this comment is too much.

    • I highly doubt this. Crime rates have gone up but it’s relative. New York 41% higher crime rate yet the place stills feels safe at midnight on the subway. Bangkok is a safe city if you know your way around it

    • I've travelled to many 3rd world countries. From my experience travelers make themselves a target.

I was having a meal in Bali. And I saw this fella put his wallet on the table next to me. Wallet was so full money it couldn't close properly. Designer sunnies, bling everywhere. A perfect target.

I turned to my mate and said this C&*T will get lifted tonight. 15 mins past and some Balinese fella did a bolt and grab the wallet and goooooone.

That fella probably told all his family and friends that Bali is dangerous country. I found balinese to be welcoming people. Actually all the 3rd world countries I've been to are welcoming.

Itching to get back to Japan but don't want to isolate or jump through too many hoops so will have to wait a bit longer.

Thailand still has isolation on day 1 and day 5 at a hotel/PCR. That will cost you total at least $450 minimum. Then you need a RT-PCR to be able to even fly there. That's about another $140.

And then need compulsory covid $50k usd insurance which will cost you about $200.

Also need a medical supervised RAT or PCR to be able to even fly back to Australia. That's another $40 or $140.

And if you test positive any time in Thailand, you get thrown in covid prison (at your own cost of around $200 a day), for 10 days minimum.

And if you bring your kids to travel and they get covid and you don't, they get sent to state welfare to get taken care of for 10 days minimum (at your own cost).

People really need to do their research before buying these tickets. It's not like precovid times. There are many hidden costs and risks that you may not be aware of.
