Paying for a Gumtree Item Online for Delivery

Firstly, I know that Gumtree is always FACE TO FACE CASH ONLY and I have always been following that.

However, I am interested in purchasing a low-value item in Victoria for it to be delivered and was wondering what the "safest" way for me to do this in the odd chance I encounter a tightass scamming low-value items. Using PayPal and sending money through their Goods and Services thing? Gumtree customer support? if they will even do anything lol.

Or should I just bugger off and go back to pecking chicken pellets because the forums don't want another Gumtree scam post.

do it. just take your chances. its fine. check the seller's rating. and if they are willing to post the item.

For a real answer the only "safest" way I see is indeed PayPals goods and service option, If you use friends and family and try and do a chargeback may be bad for your account as as shows you were trying to avoid the fees for the "protection" gumtree customer support would only tell you it's for face to face transactions only

Spose you could pay half to ship half on delivery. Splits the trust equally between you both.

If it is cheap enough and I want the item enough, I will bank transfer or paypal them.
My limit for something like that is $60

If you are willing to lose your money for a low value item then go for it. Just dont go crying later that you got ripped off, thats the risk you take.

I prefer chicken pellets but crying also works

  • Gumtree customer support?

No such thing. Speaking from experience.

  • Define low value.

  • lol People here are absolutely ruthless.

Anyways, reading your post I can tell that you already know that its not a good idea to transact like that on Gumtree but you still posted an enquiry here anyways. Why ? Bored ?

eh coz low value don't really mind if I lose it but definitely annoying. Was curious if there's a better way to pay besides the PayPal method.

      And yes bored too lol

      • I understand your point of view.
Its your money, your right to do with it what you want.

Since you are looking for some communal advice, I personally like most here wouldn’t do that. Mainly because, regardless of the gravity of the transaction, it’s about using your better judgement rather than dealing merely out of ‘hopefulness’.
Also, most scammers are based overseas and they have a different perception to what’s low value to you over here with our relatively strong dollar currency. I myself potentially wouldn’t want to enable them by giving away any money as that would only make’em bolder and more patient for their next victim.

Check if it's a "highly rated" Gumtree user and how old his account is. I've just sold a $50 item on GT. When the money was in my bank account, I sent the item to his Australian street address with signature on delivery.

  • was wondering what the "safest" way for me to do this

When the payment method is 'safe' for you, its a risk for the seller.

So… back to your first point

Firstly, I know that Gumtree is always FACE TO FACE CASH ONLY and I have always been following that.

Honestly you have to take the risk and pay by whatever method the seller wants and hope they do the right thing.

If this was me, it would be a direct deposit and would wait till its 'cleared'.

  • Is this an item you can find elsewhere to buy more safely but more expensive? Depending how much extra I would say buy the more expensive one for safer.

Is this something you can't find anywhere else and you REALLY want it, it is the missing piece in your collection of something or other, and you won't go bankrupt if you lose the money? Go for it.

If it is something you don't really need or want, then don't do it.

In between the last two, flip a coin
