AVG Anti-Virus 2012 - 1PC - $2.95 for 1 Year

500

AVG Anti-Virus 2012 is the commercial version of the company's malware-hunting tool, which delivers everything you'd expect from an antivirus engine, and adds a few useful extra features for good measure.

Why choose the commercial version rather than AVG Free? The key advantage is download protection. AVG Anti-Virus 2012 checks the files you download (or receive via ICQ, MSN or Yahoo! instant messaging) against both its own scanning engine and the LinkScanner. You also get priority technical support and more frequent updates. But whichever version you use, you'll benefit from a new focus on performance in the 2012 editions which reduces their impact on your PCs speed and cuts scanning times.

Note that this is AVG Anti-Virus 2012 with a 1-PC, 1-Year license.

This is a good deal for a years licence of AVG.

But if you want free, reliable virus protection, check out Microsoft Security Essentials. So long as your copy of windows is genuine, it's provided for free.

I personally upgraded to MSE from AVG three years ago and haven't regretted it since. More stable, faster. :)

+1 for Microsoft Security Essentials. Used to use AVG for many years and initially the Microsoft option wasn't worth it. In the last few years though it has really improved and does everything required without all the bloatware.

    • +5

I was a huge AVG free fan and installed it on plenty of friends/family machines in the past, but recently started using MSE and it's really simple, quick and effective. AVG has more features but for anyone who doesn't need anything more than the bare bones real time anti-virus protection and scanning then get MSE.

This is still a great deal though so will + :)

I came here to say exactly what Michael15286, Tortyfoo and Zenskas have all said.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a great product: great detection rates, very light on resources, free and reliable.
You need an activated valid installation of windows, and you get it here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security…

Only downside is the scans take longer than competing products, but I "set and forget" those scans for when I'm not on the PC, so this "con" doesn't impact me at all.

      I highly recommend MSE.

Sorry for the neg; the plus/minus buttons are soo close together on the iPhone screen… -.-
(I wish they made them bigger/further apart for OzBargain mobile…)

You don't need a genuine version of windows either just a good activator or so SWIM told me. like the others above I haven't been using AVG for a few years now it takes up a lot of resources for what is now not as good a job as it used to do.

    • I agree MSE is the best. I am using in all my laptops.

  • +9

I've been using Avast for over 5 years now , the free version and its pretty damn good,
    never had any problems.

  • +1

    OP… Anti-virus =/= Anti-malware

  • +5

Used AVG for a number of years but is too bloated these days. Went to Avast and now Avira.

    • +1

Totally agree. Used AVG for a number of years until it started becoming a RAM hog, then changed to Avast (Free) and couldnt be happier. Using Avast with MSE and everything is great.

      • I remember using AVG before and finding it bloated also. I use Avast! now also, and malwarebytes. They're both doing pretty well.

  • +1

    Thank You.. got 4 :D

After using Norton for a number of years previously, I used AVG free version a few years ago and still got infected. YGWYPF, never again.

Actually you get what you surf for.

    • -2

No AV is going to protect you 100%

But I bet the AVG doing a better job than Norton.

  • Used Avast for a year. Just got Bitdefender 2012 last night. heard some good reviews about it.

  • Great find thanks mate was just looking for a AV software.

  • +7

ESET NOD32 is also really good. Really reliable and great for use for gamers. runs silently in background.
just look at the comparison chart they have with other AV software.

Not sure why some silly person downvoted you, especially when its hard to have a wrong opinion on something like this (unless you like norton/symantec)

Nod32 is one of the best AV there is.

The issue is it costs money and considering most people don't get virus's and things very often your unlikely to see a huge benefit over something free like Avast.

Either way its still worth considering.

    • +1

I've used nod32 in an enterprise environment and can vouch for its credibility. Simply said - it handles the AV solution beautifully.

Only issue is pricing - it is expensive for personal use, esp given the availability of free alternatives out there.

    • Agree, I had been using it for nearly 4 years because it was so good. However it was costly and never once had any promotion. I switched to Avast! for a few days now. Although it wasn't as low profile as NOD32 but I feel no different in term of performance.

FYI..the AVG Internet Security (1PC) is also on sale for A$9.99 (86% off, RRP A$69.99)

I don't think this is worth it, just because its paid it doesn't make it better.

Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast are both great, especially when Avast has features like sandboxing

  • +1

Panda cloud is also another good free one

  • +1

Highly recommend Avast - the free version does a great job of real-time virus and browser protection.
Avg has compatibility issues with certain programs, and gives false positives

    • +3

Whoop sorry for the downvote…picked up phone and accidentally hit the screen.. :/ ..cant find revoke option.. :(

      • +1

I just figured it out last night. Under cruise controls comment, click the word "votes". Then click the delete button next to your vote. It removes your neg, but you can't vote again on that comment. :)
        Hope that helps!

        • Aha! Awesome thanks! Only i can't revoke now since it's older than an hour :(

        • no worries mate, your comments more than makes up for that :)

  • +5

I havnt used an antivirus in years.. haha

  • +1

+1 for Avast. Free and as good if not better than all the paid ones.

  • Recommend microsoft security essentials currently here or have used avg free a long time ago and more recently avast free and then avira free, all good products.

  • $2.95 for an anti-virus is still too expensive when you can get much better anti-virus programs for free.

    • For $2.95 you also get their support service though. Not that it really matters for a techie, but I guess 2.95 for 1 year support is pretty cheap.

  • McAffee is going for $4.50 for 3 user 1 year licenses on ebay. 2010 version, but doesn't make much difference.

  • I still remember AVG BSOD'ed my PC after software update due to some kernel driver issues and came up with public apology later…

  • Wow….this is cheap. If I havent already bought Kaspersky, I'll save some bucks.

    • No offence, Kaspersky is better in every way.

  • Is this supported in Windows XP 64 bit natively?

Funny thing. Avast licence expired yesterday, went to switch to AVG but before I could my computer was infected within a space of 5 minutes. Now is completely unable to boot my windows 7 partition.
I'd say don't use Avast unless you plan to never stop using it. It seems to hold off all the viruses and when you remove Avast they all attack at once…
    It is pretty though.

Hopefully AVG serves me better once I get Win7 going again.

  • I'm not really a fan of avast, I find it very over-reactive and pulls a lot of false positives. Its very over protective which is good if your a noob, but if you know what your doing its annoying.

  • -8

Plenty of free alternatives. MSE is way better than this piece of shit.

  • +1

I haven't tried too many anti-virus programs but I would recommend Comodo Internet Security its free. Theres also a pro version as well. I would recommend comodo because of it's defence+ system , it also has a inbuilt sandbox.

  • Kaspersky + MalwareBytes for me ;)

Great deal though. So Anti-Virus meaning there's no internet security right?

    • yep

  • Just installed Microsoft Security Essentials after reading the comments up the top, and now my computer only works in Safe Mode. MSE cannot be uninstalled in Safe Mode either. F**kUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

    • hmm…did you also read that MSE works when you have a genuine windows?

      • +1

I've got a Dell desktop which came with Windows 7 preinstalled and I presume it's genuine.
