Carrying a Portable Battery "Jumpstarter" on an Airline?

You know, in case the plane gets into any trouble…

No, I'm flying interstate to pick up a car and drive it 1000km home. The car should be fine but has been sitting for a while, for peace of mind I'd like to take my portable jumpstarter (Gooloo 55.5Whr) with me. It's under the 100Whr portable battery limit so that's fine. But it's got the jump plugs with it and I'm unsure if that'll be a problem? I can ring the airline tomorrow but was just wondering if anyone has any ideas about this one in the meantime. Cheers :)

If you are worried, cables go in checked in, battery goes in cabin.

No one will know if the cables will get past security, completely up to the security guard that you get. I know someone that wasn't allowed to board with a compass once. Security said they could take the needle out and use it to stab someone. WTF.

  • I've taken large numbers of lipos of the plane before, just taped the ends with electrical tape.

    I'd just do it

I usually put the battery in my cabin baggage and carry the cables separately by attaching them to my nipples.

    • I guess cabin baggage just became everyday. lol

    • Attach one clamp to nipples, one to cabin roller bag, frees up hands for passport/tickets and a snack.

  • For LiPo to 100 Wh is fine as carry on, up to 160 Wh is allowed with prior approval.

Depending on how old the battery in the car is and how long it's been sitting around unused, it might be worth buying a new battery as soon as you pick it up the car.

    • True, I might just do this and avoid risking losing part of my jump starter kit at the airport as I don't have check in, only carry on.

Check you have roadside cover including towing such as:
        https://www.mynrma.com.au/cars-and-driving/roadside-assistan… and Registration and Insurance.

        Check the Spare Tyre.

        Safe travels.

Thanks mate. I'm going to ring NRMA tomorrow to organise roadside.

Car has a spare so all good there, it has rego but since it's interstate I have 14 days back in NSW to organise a blueslip. And I've had the seller fit a new battery in for peace of mind so no problem there now either.

  • I had a 10m roll of rope when I traveled interstate to pick up a van, and they too it off me. Said it was banned because I could choke someone. I did argue that laptop power cables can be used the same and the security guy agreed and has to enforce rules.

Best bet is check in luggage, or express post the item to the car seller.

  • No deals on Gooloo this month it seems -_-.

Wanted one for a driving holiday next month.
