This seemed like a good deal to me, I almost posted it until I saw the Standard postage to Sydney $12.50!

    • +4

agree, a real shame. Would like to try but $12.50 shipping to Melbourne suburbs kills it.

      OP, is pickup available?

      • +4

2kg for $55 delivered is decent deal!

        • Thanks, we think so too ;)

        • +4

Decent deal for the minority of households doing through >2kg of beans in less than 3-4 weeks.

I poor deal with shipping for the rest of us

          • +5

@muwu: There are few options, ie share 1kg each with another family member, a friend, a colleague, a neighbour, or freeze 1kg for later use? A bit harsh to negg the deal tho..

            • +7

@huntabargain: Yeah, true, sharing is an option.

I would find a big difference in effort (finding another customer, agreeing on price split, organizing exchange). Much easier to order 1kg.

I'm personally an espresso drinker who practices freezing beans. Though I still very much enjoy beans ~1-2mo after roasting when kept frozen, I believe the quality drops and isn't too dissimilar to keeping in an airlock bag in the cupboard (and most opinions I've read agree on that, which I figure is why freezing is considered a slightly contentious practice).

              • +4

@muwu: I agree. People swear by freezing but when I've run tests it's almost the same as leaving it in the original bag in a cool place.

I own a vacuum chamber and even with that freezing beans isn't much better. It sometimes tends to pickup freezer smell which is definitely worse than storing outside.

Pretty sure the idea freezing is significantly better is just placebo, and while some website tests say freezing is better, others say there's no discernible difference.

With a 1kg bag I just put 250g into into a vacuum canister each time.

                • @fusion17: Same here i put 200grams into jar each week and zip lock the bag tight and then double ziplock it and it still taste good till end of second month. As long as you keep the air out

          • @muwu: Weird neg. Freezing beans in airtight bags works well.

            • +2

@thestig: Would you say you find the quality of a frozen bean >4 weeks post roasting to be the same as a fresh bean 1 week after roasting?

              • @muwu: Yes, practically indistinguishable- which surprised me also.

I use vacuum sealing though, maybe that is what makes the difference.

                • +2

@Skfdc: I find there's something unbeatable about a bean at about that 1 week mark after roasting. The flavour is incredible, complex, the shot is velvety, there's a heap of crema.

I just don't find that with a bean after about 2 weeks, and definitely not with a frozen bean.

                  • @muwu: I was surprised at the lack of noticeable difference, I could be wrong but it might be your freezing process that is the issue? For me, I find that the beans start to take a noticeable drop in flavour after about a week - I think it is slightly less when frozen. That’s why I freeze in slightly smaller quantities (~200g) - but 200g usually only lasts me a couple of days anyway ;)

                • @Skfdc: Can you please explain how you vacuum seal and what accessories you use for that? Thanks!

              • @muwu: Yeah if I've kept it in an airtight bag I would say there is negligible difference even after 2 to 3 months. I freeze it up in small bags of around 5 doses per bag so use them within 2 days of defrosting. I do generally drink the frozen ones with milk so maybe that hides some of the difference but I've seen a lot of people who drink espresso only in various espresso groups saying they get good results freezing so it's not just me. Give it a go with a few doses of the next beans you buy and try for yourself.

                • +1

@thestig: Nice. I like to hear good results with freezing.

As above, I'm a regular bean freezer. I order 1kg at a time and I'm a single household coffee drinker with no more than one coff (double shot) per day. That 1kg will last 6-8weeks, so I'm typically consuming nearly half that kilo after freezing.

But I believe the age (>3-4 weeks), regardless of freezing, makes a difference (however small) compared to consuming them in their first week or two. If that difference mattered more to me (in my pursuit to become a greater coffee snob), I'd only buy 250g at a time. But the dollar value wins out.

So I'm definitely not buying 2kg at a time (especially when there are good 1kg deals not ostensibly pricing their margin into delivery costs).

Turns it into 28% off, given at default price it's free shipping, instead of the advertised 50% off

  • Thanks OP - free shipping for 2x1kg bags

    • Thanks!

  • Got any deals on a lighter roast OP?

    • +1

Not right now but we will have something in the next week or so. Sign up to our database to get the first word!
      https://sensorylab.com.au/

      • Look forward to it :)

      • Be interested in the lighter roast also like the Santo blend

  • +8

50% off seems rather misleading given the discount drops the order total under the free shipping limit.
More like a 28% discount for 1kg, "up to" 50% discount if you're buying enough.

    • +3

      Yes 2kg $55 a deal, unfortunately I want 1kg and at $40 nothing special.

  • Hi OP, the Santo Organic Espresso Blend - is it good for a white-based coffee? Thanks.

    • +1

It's fruity thanks to the Ethiopian component and a lighter roast so it's better black but still very delicious in milk coffee. If you're looking for a lighter blend for milk based coffee, Steadfast is delicious and a little light than Stellar. Hope that helps!

      • I know there are elements of individual preferences, but if you have to rate all three in order - for taste/satisfaction in making a milk-based coffee, how would you order them? Would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

        • +5
          1. Stellar (darker roast, rich flavours, punches through milk very well)
          2. Steadfast (slightly lighter than Stellar and our most popular blend, our house blend for milk coffee)
          3. Santo (lighter, better as a long black, espresso, filter)

          Does this help?

    • +4

Check out of the previous Santo deals before buying. Lots of complaints. Might be easier to pull a decent shot using the Stellar blend.

      • Thanks. I guess I was too enthusiastic, did not read carefully, and the deal is for 2kg of Stellar only (for free shipping), no mix-and-match, so it's not going to be an issue.

        • Yeah good concur to avoid Santo, unfortunately some of worst beans I’ve ever had.

          • @dlcx: I was part of the sad Santo club too UwU

And I was using a Baratza Forte.

  • Just ordered two kilos thanks OP

    • Thanks, enjoy!!

  • Anyone wanna share a 2kg purchase to save on incurring the shipping cost? I'm in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

tried sensory lab last time and received stale beans.

    • +1

That doesn't sound right. Please email us at [email protected] and we'll send you out a fresh order free of charge.

    • +4

Same. I tried the steadfast expecting to be swept away from the comments and found it stale and lacklustre. Have gone back to Inglewood, Little Marionette and Pablos as a result. Really disappointed considering how much it gets talked up here. I thought i was the only one.

      • +1

If you read the comments from previous deals, it's definitely the most talked DOWN coffee here.

Multiple comments on stale beans, slow shipping, disgusting tasting beans, etc.

    • +1

Same. Partly due to postage delays, but it was really, really stale by the time it reached us. My comment in this thread.

  • +4

I think people forget that these businesses need to break even let alone make money.

    • It's owned by PRG. I am sure they will be fine.

    • +3

Given the price of raw coffee farmers get and the numerous brands popping up lately hardly anyone making a loss, the only ones not making money are the one growing their crop as it has always been.

  • how many single expresso can a 1 KG bag make?

    • 20g per double shot = 50 shots

    • +1

I use 18g of beans per double shot espresso on my Breville Bambino Plus. That equates to 55 espressos?

    • +1

That depends what machine and basket size you're using. We recommend 22g for a double espresso so 1KG would equate to just over 45 double shots.

    • i'm gonna be using DeLonghi Magnifica S (switching very soon as mine is on a backorder)

    • +1

      Doesn't make any eXpresso.

      • +1

gotta be quick in the morn :)

        Super eXpressos

  • Never had this coffee, can anyone recommend what it is similar to? In terms of other branding beans? Normally go for coffee supreme for home!

  • +3

Love your marketing work OP – you've managed to put out a promo exactly when I need to buy more coffee 4 times over the last few months, and managed to make me try the entire range in the process. This is the last on my list.

  • I got caught up in the major AusPost delays last year. It was 21 days from order to delivery in Sept/Oct. Not great for 2x 1KG of beans. Better to visit and pickup direct I think.

    • +3

Thanks for your hot take on capitalism. Much woke.

    • +1

Not to be a negative nancy but buying from suppliers is the easy part and you pay whats on offer at the time or whats negotiated. Factor in marketing, staff wages, equipment, ongoing costs and you start to see the margins get much slimmer.

  • +10

If you just want 1kg for a cheaper shipped price, AIRJO has 25% off until midnight tonight using the code LOVE25. I got 1kg of my favourite blend (Saratoga) for $31.47 including delivery (they do free delivery).

    • +6

Thanks got a kilo of enterprise for $29.97 delivered, $10 cheaper than this and express post included. Love Airjo.

      • +5

The real deal is in the comments. Cheers

    • +3

Thanks! Just ordered Enterprise to try it for the first time (as home made cold brew)

    • Thanks, just ordered 1kg of Enterprise (14th) Arrived (SA) already! (16th)

  • OP, is this regular delivery or express for orders over $50?

  • How's this coffee vs MyCuppa? I paid $66 for 1kg x.2 with fast Sendle ship, generally next day melb metro.

    • +1

Read comments from previous deals. I've never seen so many negative comments on a coffee deal on ozbargain before

    • $66 for 1kg x.2

      = 0.2kg

      $66 for 200g

      RIP 😵

  • +1

Shipping from VIC is a deal breaker, I started buying locally

  • So many good coffee bean deals. I have beans coming out of my ears (LBC, Airjo, Sensory Lab)

  • +1

I had pretty bad experience with this company.
took them over 4 weeks to ship to Sydney, I received 2kilo of stale beans. not recommended

  • +1

put coffee in the title so its searchable

  • +14

Downvoting because of the scummy reputation of St Ali and associated brands. I’d rather pay more to avoid supporting these kinds of businesses.

    • +1

What's Sensory Lab's association with St Ali? Same owners?

      • +4

        Same owner

        • +5

          Same identical blends, different packaging.

          • +1

@Mischaseb: Thanks for that, was gonna try these but will give it a miss. Thought StAli beans were pretty underwhelming.

    • +4

      Negging for the same

      • +2

        upvote you for the same

    • +3

Thanks for flagging this. What a piece of ****.

      • +2

        coarse language, but agree

    • +2

st ali has a company culture that they took advantage of any situation, and try whatever they can think of, right or wrong, to pursue profit. Maybe they started with the vision of creating good coffees, but now, their sole goal, is money. Back then 2 years ago with the already price jacked but never dispatched and only dispatch after price goes down alcohol(Salvatore ya dealing alcohol like dealing futures what a greedy bastard) they are like that, now with the 'free' rat kits and a good timing, they are still like that. Good job st ali, well done. That's fine, money is your top goal right? why not consider internet begging, just don't call yourself a coffee company please.

      • +3

Beyond the dodgy RAT "giveaway". The guy sounds like a scumbag. No penalty rates, harassing young women he employs, etc.

    • I won’t be purchasing coffee from them ever again.

  • +3

I don't remember which one but I purchased one with green label. The beans were very stale. Felt like it was like off shelf ones that has expiry date. Went back to lime blue and Airjo

  • +5

I would recommend anyone planning on getting this coffee to read the comments from the previous deals before buying.

    • +2

Still hard to go past Aldi Dark Roast for $12-13/kg :D

      • May be a stupid question, but is it roasted locally?

        • +2

Melbourne and always seems pretty fresh

      • +1

I believe the Aldi Dark roast are mix of Robusta and Arabica beans and not 100% Arabica, how they compare to their single origin ones 100% Arabica (Honduras or Colombia) ?

        • +2

Yep, Aldi dark roast is an unknown mix of Arabica and Robusta.
Ozbargain consensus seems to be Brazil > medium/dark roast > Honduras > Columbia

          • +1

@Fobsessive: I concluded that too, it's a good standard vs the other too single origin but something different nice occasionally

            • +1

@G-rig: Which Aldi bean is better to you: medium, medium dark, or dark?

              • @Fobsessive: Can't remember to be honest been buying Dark but thought I used to get medium so don't know any more . Will get medium next time.

Edit: looked for dates have never found them on the packet. A kilo probably lasts me a month, store in fridge

                • +1

@G-rig: On each packet, directly under the BB date, there is the roast date in YYMMDD format.

Also, I found this recent comment discussing seasonality and favouring Aldi medium dark https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11451256/redir

                  • +1

@Fobsessive: Cheers I'll check next time, though it was meant to be on the crimped part of bag but could never see it.

I still think it's great for the price and don't have to worry about wasting any, easily best out of the supermarket stuff

          • +1

@Fobsessive: That is interesting to know, I tried the Honduras and Columbia, have not seen Brazil for long time thou, might try 500gm of the medium roast blend when run out of beans. BTW I drink my coffee white/cappuccino. I found most Melbournian speciality roasters tend to do medium and hardly dark, so must be a reason for it..

            • @huntabargain: The Brazil variant comes during our winter.

How old are the beans at your Aldi? I just saw a variation of 4-8 weeks since roast date at Aldi
