  • These were double the price when they were first released merely 10 months ago… Great netbook — typing on one right now running Xubuntu.

  • Great price!! Anyone considering purchasing, go in store and use one… I almost bought one, luckly my friend dragged me into harvey norman and showed me one… TOO SMALL!!! This was a few months ago when Catch of the Day had them for around $270 (if I remember correctly). I ended up getting a Compaq 15.4" entry level laptop for $424 (after cash back and JB 10% off sale). Compared to the EEE this is a super computer! 120gb HDD v 4gb HDD. 1GB ram v 512mb ram. DVD burner v no optical drive. Wireless v No wireless…. As i said great price, but not great gadget. Sure its small, but so is a blackberry, which is about as useful. Think about it before purchasing!

    • Tragic.

    • no offence, but you've completely missed the point of even buying an eeepc.

      how heavy is it?
      how much battery life?
no wifi? (EEE has wifi, and it's a damn good atheros card too)
      HDD vs SSD responsiveness?

The eeepc is not a shitty 15.4" laptop gone wrong..

      • This link shows a performance comparison between the eeePC-1000 (40GB SSD) and the eeePC-1000H (80GB HDD). SSD is not necessarily a better performer.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdnyCHmq51w

The SSD does give other advantages however (e.g. stability).

        • Isn't one ATOM and one not? I'm not sure with these fancy new EEEs

      • The Compaq he/she was talking about does have Wifi. Its the same Atheros 5007EG.

You're right for arguing that its not the same thing, but for the wrong reasons.

It's not Apples for Apples. One is essentially an ultraportable netbook, while the other is a very basic desktop replacement.

In terms of performance, the Compaq could be a little better… that series does have Core Duo available, but at that price, I assume its the Celeron M54 /w 512 megs of ram. Average performance at best. However, it can be upgraded to a Penryn C2D T8300, with 3 gigs of Ram (probably $200 worth of goods), placing it in the same territory as an Apple Macbook 13. so, for $600-odd dollars, you could be weighing it against something thats triple the price.

        • Yes these both have wifi, I didn't realize that the eee had it… I get about 2 hours with typing, or 1.5 with wifi on surfing/ listening to music.

btw this is the laptop I am talking about. http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/au/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-…

          Processor: Intel® Celeron® Processor 560 2.13 GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB
OS: Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic
          RAM: 1024 MB
          HDD: 120 GB
          HDD speed: 5400 rpm
Optical drive type: SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support

Also I understand the EEE is a netbook and not a laptop… I just wanted to say they are both portable computers… I seriously considered getting an eee or a wind (better than eee)… I ended up getting the laptop above and I completely stopped using my desktop… (it is ccurrently at my parents house).

The point of my first post was to inform people that there isn't just 7" netbooks with less HDD space than a DVD and without optical drives under $AU500.

Think about it… I personally use my computer for word processing, occasionally burning a CD or DVD, music/ syncing my ipod and internet surfing/ downloading. So for me the EEE fulfilled word processing and internet surfing. My Compaq does it all. Sure its not as portable… it still fits in my messenger bag! Also it doesn't look like a kids barbie or hot wheels learning center…

          • @sickllama: First, that compaq is about twice the price. By that alone it shouldn't even be mentioned here. Second, with adaptor it weigh almost 3kg but if you're happy carrying that just for email/browsing/youtube that's fine, go for it. Third, eee form factor enables it to be used sitting, lying down, even walking. While 'movable desktops' rarely even left the table. That C560's TDP is 31W compared to dothan's 5W. It WILL cook your lap by their name proper. Dead weight and heat for what? 1.5h and still can't game/edit vids/rendering to replace desktops. Then you have to carry that optical drive around where you can use samba + wifi.

Wind is nice altough not necessarily 'better' than Eee, then again > $600 we're talking here. Netbooks aren't for n00bs. People forked thousands just to get these kind of mobility not long ago. Those $500 laptops may look a bargain, but terrible waste of money for some.

            • @Fullhalter: Whateva… I can do everything, bar gaming, on this $424 laptop!!! Photoshop… and i would mock anyone who used their EEE pc walking!!! Yea a waste of money? that would be buying a machine that doesn't do anything besides web surfing and typing on a 7" screen and tiny keyboard… bottom line the EEE may have a use, but thats for people with tiny hands and fantastic eye site…

              • @sickllama: I peronally think this debate can go on and on. Shall we leave it rest in peace since there wont be any winner.

              • @sickllama: haha now you're just deperate.

Any smart man would be able to tell you that your laptop is inferior to the EEE in all scenarios bar the desktop replacement one. The EEE won't be a desktop replacement for many people, but then again I doubt many people want that Compaq as a replacement either.

    • @sickllama — true that netbooks are not for everyone. It has been advertised as a "someone's 2nd notebook" or "kids notebook" (if you read the marketing material coming out from Asus Taiwan), and never a desktop replacement or your main box.

Surely a Blackberry is small. But its functionality is limited. The whole point of Eee PC is a small foot print x86 computer that runs almost everything you can run on your desktop. I'm running Xubuntu 8.04 on mine with all the Linux apps that I am familiar with. Very easy to program for as well — no need to test them in an emulator before uploading it onto the phone.

  • I think the reason for the deal is probably because it is a PINK.

    • I suspect so too. I'm red/green colour blind, so maybe I could delude myself that it is a pale green… Nah! But I'll buy one for my wife.

I've already got the white equivalent to this and I like it. I've never been keen on PDAs or Notebooks - but this hits the spot.

Only trouble is that the kids have ALSO found it and they can be difficult about giving up the toy - even when they each have decent desktop PCs to play with…

  • Good to see a reasonable shipping charge. Much better than the $49 from another site. I hope the EEE PCs keep coming down in price - my boys would love them (but not in pink).

    • would you still love them if they did want a pink eee?

      • LOL yes. Nothing wrong with that!

  • I never read the specs of an EEEPC notebook because i don't see it suits me in any purpose.
If i want to surf the net, i want a big screen to please my eyes.
If i travel oversea, i will need to bring the main laptop (14') with important information.
This is really a laptop for kid to play around in my opinion (cheap & fun).

    • agreed.

    • one of the computer admins at my work uses one of these regularly.

  • Hmm … :P All these need is an internal DVD player … or an external DVD player which can lock onto the body … and I'd be sold :P (portable entertainment and mobile light work)

    • Hi foundit. Normally people put their movies in sd cards, so less things to carry. Plus dvdrw will shorten the battery life a lot. I even took my sd card out if I don't use it, as it will give extra ~20min.

      • Hmm … :P … DVD player which looks like part of the computer, but has an on/off switch … hmm … :) :) :)

  • i use mine all the time as a portable entertainment device… store divx movies on the SDHC card or usb key… great price.. wouldnt mind picking another one up as a present for friend..
