What's These Pebbles on My Tree?

This branch fell from some strong wings and i noticed these hard pebble like dots, check out the photos. They look like coming from the inside the branch as per 2nd image. Any idea what it is?

Probably an insect borer of some kind and the balls are the poo that comes out the other end. That might be why the branch fell also (weakened from being eaten).

If you can tell us what the species of tree is someone might have the knowledge of which insects tend to attack that species

    • It's a palm tree, i can't be more specific because i'm unsure.

I was wondering if it is termites, I didn't think it could be other insects that like to eat wood.

Check the branch that is till attached to the tree and if has holes in i then you have borders and it should be treated ASAP . Go to a nursery (not Bunnies) and take the photo with you and get the recommended treatment. the longer you wait the more damage the border will do.

    • Thanks for the advice, I'll check nursery. I can't check other branches as the tree is too high up, it's a 8-10m palm tree.
My main concern is if its termites, as it's close to my house.

  • termites?

  • look similar to termite dropping but it's unlikely they live high up, are you sure that frond just fell off the tree and not the one been on the ground longer?

    • Yea, absolutely just fell off the tree, which is about 8-10m high. Why do you say they unlikely live high up? Some fronds do touch/lean on my house/house guttering

  • What's These Pebbles on My Tree?

Tree? Looks like a palm frond to me. nothing to see here.

  • Looks like carpenter ant nest. Did it rain a lot in your area the last few weeks? they probably moved higher ground.

    • Do they enjoy the moisture? So the frond pictured leans on the guttering of a double story house.

      • Nah they usually climb trees when it rains too much have it on going issue with them weeks of heavy rain they nest in my rotary clothes line.

They don't do any damage they just like somewhere high to put their eggs in. They usually go once all the eggs hatch.

I found what works was ant sand yeh kills it but then a few months later a new colony arrives. So it became a waste of money.
