Join the Powerpal App LoadShifter Challenge & Earn $5-$50 @ Powerpal

370

We’re excited to announce Powerpal has partnered with Monash University to make a new Load Shifter challenge available within the Powerpal app.

Load Shifting is a new way for households to help balance the electricity grid as more low-cost renewable solar and wind energy comes online. By joining in the Load Shifting challenge you’ll not only be using energy when it is cleanest but you'll also get the chance to earn real rewards - it’s both a win for the planet and for your wallet.

Participating is easy and we’d love for you to join!

Here’s how it works:

  • Register: Join the Load Shifter challenge in the Powerpal app for your chance to start earning rewards.
  • Get notified: When there are times of particularly low or high demand on the grid we’ll let you know via an alert to your phone so you prepare for the Load Shifting event.
  • Respond: Adjust your energy use during the event window for that day - for example, you could turn up or down your thermostat or schedule your next laundry load to match the challenge time window.
  • Claim your reward: Sync your energy consumption with your Powerpal app within 48 hours of an event to claim rewards for adjusting your energy consumption. If you’re at home during the event you can also track how you’re doing in real-time during an event by visiting the challenge dashboard in the Powerpal App.
  • Tell us how it went: This challenge will run for around two months. When the challenge finishes we’ll ask you to complete a short questionnaire, after which you’ll be able to redeem your reward as a Prezzee digital shopping voucher that can be spent at hundreds of major retail stores.

Everyone who registers for the challenge will receive at least a $5 reward and you could even earn up to $50 depending on how much electricity you shift during the Load Shiting events.

For more information and to register, simply open the Powerpal app and follow the instructions in the Challenges tab. Places are limited so don’t delay!

    Link?

    • It's within the app itself: "simply open the Powerpal app and follow the instructions in the Challenges tab"

I’m not seeing it under challenges, targeted perhaps?

  • +1

Thanks , whats really a challenge is getting the simple humble metric out of their eco system

Aren't households already being additionally charged by utility companies for them to install smart meters to provide them more valuable grid load-balancing data :|

      • Yes, pay 10cents a day so we can harvest your data.

    • +1

They’re beta testing a new device right now - a small Bluetooth receiver you can query via an API.

This is really good people who stay at home with nothing else to do. You can make electricity your new hobby.

  • Any discount code on the unit itself?

  • TL;DR?

  • +2

Sounds very similar to Origin Spike

    • Same as AGLs Peak Energy Rewards.

I love it though, I turn everything off at the mains for an hour then try get everyone out of the house!

Is this for electricity or sewerage?
"earn up to $50 depending on how much electricity you shift during the Load Shiting events."

Is this targeted? Not showing in my app (I am in VIC, on Ausnet).

  • I joined, but tbh no idea how this is interesting or how it works.
I don't think you can really change the way you do much, you just do what you do daily.

    • So that means they get your information for free. You get nothing? IF were the owners of this app, I would say "NICE".

    • You can easily see your usage in real time.

You can make adjustments if your plan has peak and off peak charges to save money. For example, your plan has cheaper electricity between 10pm and 6am so you schedule the dishwasher to run between those hours.

      • yeah I guess so, but I have solar, so my scenario it's best during the day anyways

        • Well with PowerPal you can see if you’re using any electricity from the grid. Although your solar set up might already do that.

          • @sween64: yeah, and the powerful app already tells me what I'm using from the grid live, but yeah, not sure how this will affect my usage behaviour tbh

  • Not seeing it in my app (which is up to date). Targeted it seems?

    • I'm seeing it, in Vic.

  • Not showing on the App in WA

    • +1

that would be because we have two choices… off grid or synergy lol

  • +1

Not showing on my app. Android. Victoria.

  • You know I’m thinking of $120million when all I see is “Powerball App”.

  • The battery in mine died earlier this month (14 months in from installation). Powerpal sent out another unit within days.

Haven't got this offer in my android app in Vic

    • +3

      Yeah same as mine.

      Impressed with their replacement service.

I smashed open the old one expecting an 18650 cell in there.. But it was powered by a regular pair of AA alkaline batteries.
Seems wasteful that it's not user replaceable.

      • That's interesting and I agree as seems like an awful waste especially as they are expensive @ $129.. Thanks for cracking it open. When mine dies due to failed battery and if out of warranty, I now know that the battery could be replaced (once inside/cracked open)

    • The battery in mine died earlier this month (14 months in from installation)

Same thing happened to me. The replacement arrived literally the next day after logging a support call early in the morning.
I don't know if Emerald provides the same level of customer experience as this mob.

Here's an image of what the insides of a Powerpal look like if anyone interested.. https://imgbb.com/vVh4KH7

      • Thanks. Have saved a copy of that.

      • The CSR who took my support call said to take the "broken" Powerpal device to an e-Waste facility. Thankfully, I didn't listen to their advice. :)

Now, how did you manage to dissolve that glue to pry it open? Any pointers? TIA.

        • +1

Sorry I neglected to attribute the image. I found it here: https://whrl.pl/RglbkA

I have a broken Powerpal for which I've received a replacement. I plan to pop the broken unit open but haven't had a chance yet.

  • Could not see it in my Challenge tab?

    • Looks like its targetted :(

  • This feels like Powershop's load balance challenge when I was with them many years ago.

  • +1

Even after registering for this challenge it lets me register again and again. They need to hire better software developers.

    • Negged for pointing out a bug in their software. Nice! Thank you, negger.

      • +1

Have a "+" to counter the idiot who negged without noting a reason why. There are plenty of them on Ozb :-)

  • All I read is Victoria gets a free powerpal and the chance to be paid up to $50 (we all know that means on person get $50) and the rest get the minimum. I live in NSW and couldn't be bothered working two months to try to win $50 but the powerpal could be useful. Looks like you need to be Victorian to get that.

Victorians only is not mentioned by the OP.

    • I am in NSW and have registered. The free Powerpal unit is indeed for Vic only. I bought mine.

  • Interesting 👍

  • I'm in Sydney and just got an email from Powerpal inviting me to join Load Shifter

  • Looks like I missed out on the program. 😢

Thank you for signing up for the Load Shifting challenge.

Interest in our first Load Shifting challenge has been extremely high and unfortunately, we have not been able to offer everyone who applied a chance to actively participate in the challenge this time around.

As a thank you for your willingness to participate in this challenge we would like to offer you a $5 Prezzee digital shopping voucher that can be spent at hundreds of major retail stores. You will receive a notification within the next few days when your voucher is available in your Powerpal app's Challenges tab.

      You won!

      So you got $5 already…
Meanwhile I did one challenge last night, which earnt about $1 or less of rewards…

      • Likewise……$1 only for me. Seems odd to give those that missed out the full $5 and those that put in effort less. Ah well.
