Is 64GB enough storage for light users? Can music and video go onto the SD card?

    • +6

I use mine for work (Slack, Ozbargain), plus a couple of indie games and have found 64GB to be satisfactory.

and have a 128GB SD card for all the media. You cannot move apps to SD card.

It also comes with a pen included and also supports the Galaxy S-Pen from the S21 series, I kept the pen in the box and just use the same pen I already own with the S21 Ultra.

      • Thanks we got it. Seemed like a good price.

      • +4

I use mine for work (Slack, Ozbargain)

        Where do I apply?

      • How do you use Slack on a table in conjunction with your PC? Do you use a bluetooth keyboard to reply to Slack on the tablet?

        • +1

I bought a cheapo generic keyboard case. Not recommended as it's quite janky.

The keyboard has super weak magnets so it doesn't stay firmly attached to the case, uses Bluetooth (as opposed to physical pogo pins) and it charges via Micro USB.

    • 64GB will be plenty for light users plus you can pop your music and videos on an SD card

    • +1

What do you define as light usage? If it's mostly media consumption (web browsing, YouTube, etc.) it'll be fine. If you want to film videos or take pictures with it (not really reccomended, tablet cameras aren't all that good), use an external SD card like a 128 or 256GB card as it'll probably fill up the 64GB of internal storage relatively fast.
How fast it fills up will also obviously depend on the apps you get (games and such).

    • +1

Apps and ganes are installed on internal storage. Music, Videos and other data on SD card. Some but not all apps can also be moved to the memory card to free up internal storage.

    • What about usage for kids, 8 and 5.possibly a couple of school apps since they use Chrome books and whatever else kids would use

      • Should be able to handle school apps fine, like a few educational games or Minecraft or whatever. YouTube and Chrome and whatnot will all run fine.

  • Good deal. Would have purchased if I didn't already own a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Wi-Fi 32gb.
Samsung I believe offers four years of security and major updates.

    • +2

I think 3 years major update for the S7 FE (A7 is 2 years), it's only the S8 series getting 4 years major update.

      • +4

Which should be decent enough, and the performance of this is very good (QSD 778 is flagship level).
…however it has a TFT screen, not OLED :(

      • Last year, Samsung announced its new software update policy that promises four years of support for Galaxy devices launched since 2019. Five years for there flagship devices and new 2022 releases.

Officially announced earlier this month. You can check the list of Samsung devices getting four years of regular software updates and maintenance releases, Including the Galaxy Tab A7 and S7.

        • +2

Just to clarify this point, the Tab S7 gets 3 android updates and 4 years security updates. The Tab S8 gets 4 android updates and 5 years security updates.

  • +6

Way more value in Lenovo and Xiaomi options IMO. Only reason I see to get this is presumably no Widevine issues to deal with.

    • +7

And ongoing system updates. I have an s5e and have been consistently getting os updates

      • Good point. Lenovo updates for a year I believe, and Xiaomi a bit longer from my experience

        • +8

Yep and Sammy is just way more polished all round, + accessory availability as well.
I use dex (with a KB cover) and galaxy buds and it ties together well (S7 tab base)

The widevine thing isn't trivial, 500 dollars but can't view streaming in HD? GTFO

Recently they committed to 4 years software updates so thats 3 more years for this one, no other droid will give you that

    • +2

If I had more free time to mess around with ROMS and bootloader unlock I'd buy a Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad, but since I plan to do banking and online shopping on the device I'd prefer a "works right out of the box" solution.

You also get regular SW updates, included stylus and a local warranty, which is something you give up if you buy from Banggood or Aliexpress.

      • +1

Haven't seen much (if anything) about custom ROMs for Lenovo tablets anyway. It is certainly a more out of the box experience (and local warranty's handy), but specs are pretty important to me and if I have to fiddle for a few hours to have a better experience in the long run, I will.

      • I was really looking at the 2021 pro specs are awesome for the price but the widevine issues or having to deal with flashing roms and not everything working properly is a killer as I don't have time any more

      • I have XiaoXin Lenovo Pad Pro 2021 TB-J716F and I haven't been able to find any custom roms for it, if you know of any let me know.

I'm not a guru but I've rooted and flash various Samsung devices, a LG G3, ZTE Axon 7 and when I get around to it I'm gonna flash something on to my Poco F3.

        Lenovo got me stumped :_(

    • Can you recommend some decent Lenovo and/or Xiaomi tablets ?

I'm kind of looking for one.

      PS:
I like the flexibility of Chinese brands, however with Xiaomi phones,
I found their bootloader unlocking process to be very annoying
(ie. have to inform mothership of your details, wait 1 week for unlock codes, etc. etc.)

      • Lenovo - p11 (pro, plus, 2021, tab 11) so much models, just find one in your price range
        Xiaomi - pad 5

  • +1

using it daily, really great tablet for media consumption

  • +1

Super weird aspect ratio. Why not just call it what is, 16:10…

    • Not sure what you mean. This is 16:10.

      • +2

        LOL the description says 14.4:9

  • +1

the 64gb version has less ram than the 128gb version

    • +1

Yeah. Worth to get the 6 gigs version

  • Thank you, just brought one :)

    • Where di you bring it to?

  • Card deal works once on payment Page

    • +1

Does it show $499 in total for both Card and Tablet? Edit:looks like it

      • How do I add the microSD card on Bing Lee?

        • +3

Only for Amazon, there's no SD card offer at bing lee. (edit: updated deal, apparently there is a SD card offer).

  • Worth an upgrade from my Tab S4? Mainly using it for textbooks and multimedia.

    • +1

I can't exactly comment - I went from the Tab S4 to the Tab S7 plus. The larger screen is nice, but the tab s4 still looks amazing too. I'm not sure how you will feel going from super oled to the s7fe screen. Maybe best to see it in person.

      • Yeah the screen was my biggest reservation. I just missed out on that S7+ edu deal by an hour or so too.

        • If you have access to the EPP or EDU store, I think the Tabs 8+ at $1199 represents good value. Yes it's more than the Tab S7+ deal but you are going to end up with 2 more android updates then the S7+ which is worth something in my book.

  • How's the app ecosystem for Android tablets now? Do they scale properly to large screen sizes and do common apps have an alternative UI tailored around tablets?

    • +3

Phones these days have pretty large screens, so apps have been designed to be useable on tablet sized screens for some time. They generally won't have 'tablet specific' UIs to take advantage of the larger screen however.

    • Sadly this is a problem with Android tablet in general.

    • Android 12L ?

  • I was looking for getting a tab for my child .. How this one compare to this Ipad with same price …https://www.catch.com.au/product/apple-ipad-10-2-inch-wi-fi-64gb-9th-generation-space-grey-8975772/?offer_id=42128891&ref=gmc&gclid=Cj0KCQiA3-yQBhD3ARIsAHuHT66VzCwNhvmGkzyNHG3ibK0JadO_BjcP9sG37Zbvp9AonQNzV3CKxnsaAsp9EALw_wcB

    • I have a s6 tab lite and I love it. It is fine for my 8 years old son to use at home but his school needs him to use an ipad at school.

imho, this is much more value than an Ipad.

      • +2

if a school forced me to use an iPad,
        i would change schools! haha

      • Could you share your opinions? Why do you think it's better than an ipad?
I'm not a fan of Apple products, but thinking of buying an iPad to use with my work laptop

        • +1

The ipad pencil is $100 or so extra. This tablet already has an included stylus. You can expand the storage in this tablet.

If you are use to the just being able to transfer files between devices like android phone to pc/laptop and vice versa by dragging and dropping. Then the apple way of file transfer will frustrate you.

          • @xoom: Thanks.
What I expected from an iPad is to use it as the white-boarding device in Teams/Zoom meetings. I heard that it's intuitive to use an iPad with a MacBook. Not sure about an Android tablet and a MacBook.

            • +1

@Averell: If you already have a macbook people have found it ideal to also have an iphone and/or an ipad for the simple interoperability between apple ecosystem products.

  • +5

    I want super AMOLED

    • Don't we all but you are not getting any for $499

  • +1

How's this compared to the latest iPad? They are both $499.

    • +3

This one comes with a pen, has microSD card support, laminated display (I think), and USB-C (with alt-mode support) so you could connect it to a 4K display (or a USB-C hub/dock). 12 inch screen. You could do more with this tablet, but if you are after a tablet mainly for media consumption and maybe a bit of mobile gaming, then iPad might be easier.

However, the latest iPad has a faster CPU. It depends whether you are more of an Android or an iOS version or both.

    • +1

Android devices allow you to instantly add/remove storage, with MicroSD cards.
Then, it's easy to just remove the MicroSD card and transfer any photos, etc.

Try transfering photos from an iPad.
      It's a painful process,
unless you're OK with moving photos to the "cloud" (eg. iCloud, Google Photos, etc.)

      • +4

Thats what irked me so much when i was using an iphone.

Transfering photos to the computer and vice versa was just one step too many.

Drag and drop. Why is that too hard for apple to implement?

        • +2

Apple's deliberate fencing-off has good and bad effects,
eg. they can sandbox the risk/threat vectors (security perspective), they control the market (market cornering),
dependency on their tools (some kind of bonding to them), etc.

It's a good way to maintain integrity of their brand, hardware and security risks.

However, it's really frustrating to a techy person, when the job is to just transfer the contents across without any obstacles.

Their obstacles remind me of a government bureaucracy…haha

I usually tell everyone to use iPhones, so i don't have to provide tech support to them (less things break, and they can go to an Apple store for help, haha)
but if i have to transfer stuff from iPhone or iPad,
i'm constantly pulling my hair out, because it's so convoluted and i struggle
( because I'm more into PCs and Android, and simply can't work out the Apple way of doing things )

          • @whyisave: Have you heard of airdrop?

            • @Icecold5000: i have heard of it, but don't know too much about it.
i get the idea of what it's trying to do.

will AirDrop work between iPad and Win10 computer ?

( also, the tablets that i have to deal with sometimes,
are iPads that are 9-10 years old and running old iPad OS )

  • Bought it. Hope there's no stock shortage and is all good. Thank you!!!!

Planning to use it for media and as a learning tool for my music self studies

  • +1

I feel like this is a FE in name only. Not that it's a bad tablet or anything but I've come to expect the core of a flagship (chipset, screen) to be featured on a FE device.

  • Ordered one for me from JB and one for wife from Amazon. Noticed now that Amazon one says Snapdragon 750G

    • +2

Amazon sold out of Wifi tabs and showed you the 5G variant.

The 5G Cellular version has the weaker Snapdragon 750G. The Wi-Fi version is faster

      • Cheers scrimshaw, …. doesn't help that Samsung's own aus site shows 750G for both models, but yeah, the wi-fi is 778G and 5g is 750G by the looks.

  • slightly cheaper than iPad Air 4 from education store, if you bought it during 8% cashback + pay with 10% off Apple giftcard + sell the free Airpods for $150 ($524). However, no pencil included.

    • Even cheaper if you can get your mum to chip in with $50 !

  • Picked one up, must have been one of the last Amazon ones, Cheers OP

  • +2

For those who missed the Amazon deal, you can also add the SD Card on the Bing Lee store and the coupon ENTER30 to get it for $499 also.

    • Wow.. It works! too late for me as I have bought it already.

      • Same. Now seeing if i reorder and cancel one of them.

Not seeing where you put the code? Did you have to be signed in with an account?

        • At the check out page on the right hand site above the sub total, there is "enter it here"
How did you cancel your current order?

          • @blitzzbargain: I havent cancelled my order yet. Might call them tomorrow about it.

Ninja edit. Unable to put in new order. Even under new delivery address and email. Enter the code and it accepts it and discounts it but wont proceed to ordering one.

    • Oh NO!! I missed your comment.. was too excited and just placed an order straight away.

      • Same. RIP.

  • +1

@Amazon, now you can add to your cart, but still in backorder status.

  • OMG, been looking for a good deal for months! Great price, just ordered one. Thanks!

  • Binglee isn’t letting me place an order, anyone experiencing the same?

    • Same. I managed to order one without the discount code.

So i tried to order one with a discount code and a memory card. No go.

      • +2

It's not just you, there is a red error stating "Unable to place your order" when the coupon is applied.

        • Just purchased the Amazon back order instead, will see how I go with that!

  • I remembered in the old day, android tablets were so laggy compared to ipad. Is that still the case now? Just need for kids learning

    • Not as bad. Not as fast as ipad but useable.

  • Didn't need one. Couldn't resist that price though! Thanks :)

  • This or iPad 9th gen?

    • Depends what you want to use it for. For media consumption. Like streaming and browsing. Either is fine.

However if you got specific apps in the apple ecosystem. Then you know which you should go for.

      Here is a spec comparison:

      https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10922&idPhone2=…

      • Thanks in performance ipad leaves tab fe far behind. I guess I know what to take now.

  • Apart from ecosystem I wanted to know which offers better value and experience.

    • With the ipad the apple pencil provided the version you get supports it. Is an extra $100 or so. The tab s7 fe has it included. Plus expandable storage.

There is no headphone jack on the tab s7 fe but there is on the ipad.

      • Thanks mate

      • Still don't get it why no headphone jack on s7 but on a bloody apple product? Apple was the one who ditched headphone jack too.

  • Was tossing up between a used iPad air 3, gen 9 or pro 10.5 inch. Now this post has got me more confused! Mainly watching YouTube and playing hearthstone(fairly low intensity game).

Really not sure what my best and or cost effective option would be? Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

    • For $499 this is great value for money eventhough its only 64GB storage. Its cheap to get a 128GB microsd card. Heck even 256GB is not that much of a stretch.

In saying that. In the end you are going to have to decide for yourself which will work for you by checking all of them in person.

      • Yea should really give them all a go in person! They all can probably run my game fine and browse YouTube easily. This is what makes it hard to choose!

  • Price change? :(

    • You missed it by that much.

      • couldn't check out …….. sigh.. sent them a msg

        • If you were checking out with the discount code. Yeah. That didn't work. I found that out after numerous attempts after i already bought one without the discount code.
