PSA: TheGoodGuys National Phone Sales Service + Discounted Gift Cards = Lazy Almost-Bargains

Firstly, if this is widely known and already exploited then forgive me for wasting 25 seconds of your life.

However, if you are looking for a convenient way to shop, without leaving the comfort of your armchair and actually having to haggle in-person with eager, KPI-based salespeople, look no further than the Good Guys phone sales line!

I've purchased a couple of $1k+ items over the last two weeks efficiently and effectively (whilst juggling my full-time work duties, of course) and scored a pretty decent discount with seriously minimal effort. I doubt I could get the same result in-person (perhaps I underestimate my own ability…).
The phone option skips the whole to-and-fro sport of haggling, or at least it has for me.

My modus operandi is pretty straightforward:

  • Google your identified item of interest, find the absolute cheapest available online price (with delivery if not in your home state)

  • Call the Good Guys national sales number (1300 942 765), from the comfort of your work desk and/or home-office setup

  • Ask them for their "best price". It will be better than their advertised price, but not always that competitive.

  • If acceptable, proceed with transaction. Otherwise, mention what you have found online.

  • In both cases they came back to me with a competitive offer. Not quite as good as the cheapest online, but much, much cheaper than their advertised price and for me within $40 of the best I could find (noting $1k+ purchases)

  • Tell them you will think about it. They will get your details, and SMS you a link to the discounted offer which stays active for a week (I think)

  • Purchase discounted gift cards for Good Guys - for me that is 5% from my employee rewards program

  • Pay online via link from the received SMS

  • Enjoy new purchase!

No driving, no further phone calls or human interaction and in one case free delivery thrown in (for the other case pickup from store). Saved me about 17% overall on their ticketed prices all from the comfort of my air-conditioned office :-) In one case it beat the best I could find nationally (appliancesonline) with the added benefit of immediate pickup (vs. 1+ month delay).

Good luck, and I hope someone else also finds this useful.

I’ve done this with JB-Hifi, except they did actually match the lowest price I could find online (airpod pro from Amazon). Then I used the sms link to pay with discounted gift cards.

    • Nice!

To be fair to the GG, both my purchases were from their "exclusive" lines which aren't available anywhere else. Although in both cases (Franke, Bosch) their products really weren't very differentiated at all and they agreed this was the case (thus offered acceptable discounts). If I were matching like-for-like I expect I'd also have achieved the same result as you did for JB :-)

  • How do they include things like delivery and installation? I can't think of how it might work on their website but in person they might wave that stuff and it can be worth $50-$70 on top of your already lowest price.

    • For one of my items they threw in free shipping. For the other I agreed to pick up the item from a nearby store (or, alternatively I could pay $55 shipping, wish I opted not to).

I suspect they have the same leeway on optional free extras as in-store. As I said (and as per the post title) this may not be the best bargain you can find, but it for me it was pretty close and involved little effort! YMMV :-)

Assuming your item is in stock

    • Wow that sounds like a crappy situation.

One of my items (pick-up) is available as you can confirm availability yourself via the GG website. Upon purchase you are allocated your item from local stock.

For the other, it is only available interstate. Availability was confirmed verbally on the phone but perhaps I do run the risk of non-delivery/availability as you mention. Fingers crossed that is not the case….

  • Nice work but I'd love to know how their discounted/best price compares to the item's price on The Good Guys Commercial pricing (which is available to pretty much everyone for free). If it's similar and you can use gift cards (for additional discount) - that's amazing.

  • By using this method, is there a limit on the amount of gift cards that you can use to pay this online portal?

    Thank you.

    • For the method described in the original post there is no limit. You can purchase as many gift cards and apply them as you need. When ordering through my employee portal (to get the 5% discount) any amount above $1k gets split onto a separate e-gift card. So for my two purchases, each was paid with multiple gift cards.
