Nice little WiFi 6 router to use either as standalone or as a mesh node. Superior performance to all AX models below it and even the AX82U. Supported by Merlin. Not readily available here in Australia but can usually be found at ~$300+.

      The Asus RT-AX68U is the WiFi 6 replacement for the RT-AC68U, which was of the most popular routers from Asus and it seems that the new device can be placed somewhere above the RT-AX58U, but below the RT-AX86U, the latter being overkill for most homes.

      Pros

      Good wireless performance on both WiFi 6 and WiFi 5 clients
      OFDMA, MU-MIMO and BeamForming
      Support for AiMesh
      Instant Guard
      The app and especially the web-based interface are feature-rich and easy to use
      

      Cons

      Can't be mounted on the wall
      Non-removable antennas
      No support for 160MHz channel bandwidth

    Dual core 1.8Ghz seems a bit under powered for the price, I'd expect something around 200.

      Core count is a bit misleading. It's actually the same hardware as the more expensive AX86S, aside from WiFi configuration. The important thing here is that this is a 64-bit ARMv8 CPU with AES hardware acceleration, compared to the lower end 32-bit ARMv7 3-core without AES hardware acceleration, found in other models like the AX58U. It's going to perform much better at things like router-based VPN, USB sharing, or a very busy network.

        I have this router as part of a mesh network. The people complaining about it being a dual core don't know what they talking about. Considering it's a 64bit CPU dual core vs the 32 bit tri-core CPU of a lot of other routers.

        It has the same CPU as the AX92u 5ghz tri-band router.

        It got it as part of the last Amazon Prime sale. It's been very reliable and fast for the time I have had it.

        Both the AX68U and the AX86U are newer WiFi 6 models. The old WiFi 5 models are the AC68U and AC86U.

        AC = WiFi 5
        AX = WiFi 6

      For the punters: beware of people who don't seem to care about real world performance and just criticise spec sheets. There's a lot of them on OzBargain.

      Go read a review or two from people who have actually used the product. If it does what you want and it does it well then the processor is obviously up to the job.

  • How does the AX68u compare to the gaming router below(AX-5400) - which is cheaper at $235? Does anyone have experience with the 2?

    • No experience with either but seems like a cheaper AX82U. The main things that stand out to me are the slower CPU and the lack of Merlin support. Depending on your needs, these things may not be relevant though.

    any 4g built-in routers better than 4g-ax56

    • You could always buy the other models which allow USB Modem support.. much more on the spectrum in this space too.
      or check out Draytek they also do a built in sim slot

        i cant seem to find a 4g usb with b28 or am i just bad a google seaching…

        i was thinking of this + a b28 4gb usb modem

        4g-ax56 seems to cover all bases for what i need except if it had better wifi channels/bandwidth

  • I noticed its from the UK store - is it no onshore here yet?
    Not certain if I want to buy something offshore not yet sold here. Don't even know if this is a good price.

      That's right, this model isn't really available here in Australia yet. You can find it on places like ebay and other questionable sites but I would personally trust Amazon over all those.

      No idea what the price is going to look like when it eventually comes here, but MSRP appears to be $199.99 USD. For reference, the AX86U has an MSRP of $249.99 USD and is being sold for ~$450-500 AUD here.

      • I'm holding out for an AX3000. Seems to be a good router without forking out AX86U money.
        No hurry, as long as I buy it before the EOFY for tax reasons.

      My experience is that UK asus routers don't work well in Australia, esp in aimesh mode, due to band limitations. Had this experience with ac86, ac68 and ax55.

    This or the Ubiquiti UniFi Wi-Fi 6 Lite Access Point if I already have an EdgerouterX?

      cannot be compared, 1 is an AP the other is a Router.

      Changing to this would make your edgerouter redundant but now you dont have a secondary AP.

  • Does anyone have any suggestions for a good value for money and reliable WIFI6/AX Modem/Router which includes OPENWRT?. My old Huawei modem/router on NBN FTTN is dying and it had rubbish WIFI range anyway.

    Also, unless you have wifi 6 devices / clients, save your money and get a wifi 5 router.

    No point spending money on a wifi 6 router when you dont have any devices / clients that support when wifi 6E is coming out…

    Wifi 6E is going to be a significant improvement on 6 - It adds 1200 MHz (5925 MHz - 7125 MHz) of new spectrum to Wi-Fi. The additional spectrum allows for 14 additional 80 MHz channels (or seven additional 160-MHz channels) in wifi, which means the chances of sharing spectrum with another device/neighbor will be greatly reduced.
