Seems to be a very low price on new SFF desktops. I get this isn't for everyone, but should be able to easily meet people needs of many people doing basic tasks (Student, office worker etc)

This package comes with Windows 11 Pro, Onsite Pro-Support (1 year provide, can be renewed whiles the computer is within the warranty period or extended at time of purchase), keyboard (KB216) and an okay processor (for light duties). Also, you have some room around customisation from factory (and possible room to add DVD drive, Memory card reader, yourself at a later update, this doesn't appear as an option in checkout). 8GB is a single stick and you will need to upgrade it yourself for dual channel mode (Max 64GB)

Note: changing the hard drive to a 256 or 512GB NVMe, will almost double the price, as it changes the processor to an i5

Another upgrade that isn't as good value is the i3 is changing to the i5-10400 with 256GB NVMe for $863

In stock showing shipment tomorrow (15/03) at time of posting

Edit: YouTube Review from UK looking at the device & upgrade options

  • Doesn't look like you can upgrade the RAM, possibly single slot only?

    • I cannot find anything saying single slot but even if there was only 1 you can put up to 32GB per slot (dell website for reference).

Crucial's website also shows 2 slots, allowing up to 64GB, and the 8GB installed is removable (as expected). The OptiPlex SSF range has 4-slots for reference. Again another upgrade site supports 64GB (2x 32GB max), but I suggest if anyone is concerned contact Dell AU prior to purchase

I've yet to see a single slot RAM motherboard on a desktop PC. It will be at least dual sim slot.

If you have the expertise you could probably upgrade the RAM yourself when it arrives. Source some compatible DDR4 RAM from a PC store supplier.

Edit: actually on page 16 of the service manual it confirms that it is indeed a dual slot RAM motherboard. DIMM1 and DIMM2 slots are present.

      https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/vostro-3681-desktop_owners-man…

So you could easily just remove the existing 8GB RAM stick and install say 2 x 16GB DDR4 sticks which are compatible to make 32GB RAM. Or 2 x 32GB DDR4 sticks for 64GB RAM total. The motherboard according to the specification supports up to 32GB DDR4 RAM sticks per slot.

You could easily source compatible DDR4 RAM for the motherboard from any PC store. It would take just standard DDR4 desktop PC ram. Al though the RAM will fall back to the slowest speed which the CPU supports. The Intel Core i3-10105 CPU only supports DDR4 RAM at 2666mhz speed. So you don't need to get more than DDR4 3000mhz RAM for this computer. It will fall back to 2666mhz speed.

changing the hard drive to a 256 or 512GB NVMe, will almost double the price (upgrade this at home later or via a computer store)

This is because changing the 1TB Hard disk to either one of the Solid state options also changes the processor to the Core i5.

Cheers. I was too focused on price. Will update

Wow. Card slot and CD drive in the front?

This is literally the ideal parents PC, as a lot of them I 'tech support' for (both as a career and as a punishment for past sins) still love their CD collection, and use SD card digital cameras.

Very nice. the i3-10X- series is no slouch either!

    • "Card slot and CD drive in the front" both are optional upgrades. I still find in business / Education DVD-drives still have a place (Sadly), hence I'm still using the OptiPlex 9th Gen. I've only recently used an i3 and it wasn't total crap (I thought it was the Celeron of i-series), hence posting.

      • Oh ouch :( you're right.
Less ideal… I'll probably just go older business machines for half the cost then. ah well.

Dell, you skimped your way out of a lot of sales on parts that are probably just warehouse junk for you…

        • Positive vibes man. Sure, it doesn't have a DVD drive as standard, but the Power Button is included in the base price 🤣🤣
I'm gathering the Vostro range maybe getting ditched for the OptiPlex again but giving much the same specs at almost double the price $945 (less 7%) in OptiPlex range, might be worth it to those willing to buy external DVD etc. Was trying to aim at those thinking of going used as it can buy you time to upgrade the warranty (as is normal with dell & Business).

Note: I change the link as the i5 is the lowest in the OptiPlex SFF range now

Don't forget the Mesozoic-era VGA port at the back.

  • At this price you might as well get a $700 laptop

    • Again, this is more aimed toward business or light business users. The warranty cost next to nothing to upgrade compared to their laptops and for people like me wanting a long extendable Pro-support warranty (NBD) and some extra room to play around (PCIe slots), this is the only way to go in this price bracket.

      Warranty Upgrade (less 7% discount)
Pro-support from 1 year to 3 years +$96.25 (Historically I find after this it around $99 per 2 years after this, based on my last 4 machines and a few work OptiPlex's)
      Pro-support Plus from 1 year to 4 years +$163.00

Also, I lack to find any business or even home laptops for this price range on Dell. Ryzen 5-5500U is still around $750 and that's for a home model inspiron with pretty expensive warranty upgrades (Gathering extra $$$ as more to break).

  • I want a SFF PC that will take a 9700K. Does such a thing exist?

  • Maybe I'm out of the loop on latest parts and prices, but this seems awkwardly priced for consumers (I get these are business machines).

It seems too expensive as a basic machine to give to mum and dad and on top of that, there's just not enough grunt in it apart from the CPU - I mean, 8GB of RAM, HDD, 200w PSU for $650 is a lot of money for specs from over 10 years ago.
Even the front page "Entry Level AMD Gaming Build" on PC Part Picker for $445.95+ is better spec'd and cheaper.

And then it seems underpowered for a business machine - I can't imagine what boot times would be like on Windows 10 or 11 from a HDD.
Even as a business user, the spec sheet already makes me want to throw the PC out the window.

    • Would like to see how an AMD entry level for under $500 performs against this. The hard drive is an easy swap with dual SSD port (with dell adapter ~$8 on eBay) or M.2. Also as long as the damage isn't caused by the user, you can replace the hard drive and still retain warranty example SN550 500GB M.2 ~$66

The biggest thing you haven't taken into consideration is the Next Business Day, Onsite Pro Support (which is easily upgradable). I'm sure anyone would prefer this over having to remove the part, send it back to the seller and hope for a refund or replacement.

  • ridiculous specs for this $$$$$

    was $1200? maybe pesos

Which is why it's actually $650 at the moment. It does come with a 1 year on site warranty too. That's worth a bit.
