Orthodontics braces : plates broke twice - cancel and ask for refund ?

My son is having orthodontics braces treatment and at this stage he had plates inserted.
So he is 3 to 5 months away from braces will be installed.

The problem is that the plates broke two times in a row by now.

Every time the plates brake there are small plastic and metal parts in his mouth.
As it is happening at nighttime when he sleeps it is a serious safety concern as they may block his airways or lungs.

I am wondering what I should do in this situation ?
Can I request a full refund cause I do not want to proceed further ?

Speak to the orthodontist to understand what is going on first then what options are available.

  • Do you have any proof that the plate breaking is due to defects in materials or workmanship?

I am not sure if medical items are something you are entitled on a refund for.

  • Maybe he is chewing it / grinding his teeth and he should wear a mouthguard during the night. Talk to your orthodontist though.

I wonder why he needs a plate? I thought that happened after you finished having braces and they were removed.

    • Plates are not uncommon pre braces. My kid had them as well.

  • Sounds like your kid is grinding at night.
Have you had them checked for sleep apnea or airway issues?

As for a refund, you could ask, worst case is they say no. But if it is from your child grinding, they'll most likely say no as a service has been provided and a factor outside of the orthodontist's control is causing the issue and not them.

I do feel like they should have been able to tell by looking at the teeth if the kid is a sleep grinder and suggested a mouth guard for night time though

They can, but a nightguard won't help orthodontically, and treatment for grinding in children could partly be orthodontic treatment. It is a bit of a catch 22 situation.
