I would buy, but from Amazon? Where's the risk?

  • +12

I would say a seinfeld quote but very inappropriate at the moment

I come from Ukraine. You not say Ukraine weak!

warzone.com is a really good free online risk-like game

  • I bought this for $70 two years ago and have literally only played it once. Spewing

    • +16

Well, when you finish it you can start again

  • Cheers OP, widely considered to be one of the best board games ever made but I hadn't picked it up yet because of the price

    • +3

One of the most widely purchased, which puts it in the same dreadful pool as monopoly.
      Very far from the best.

      • +4

Monopoly is objectively rubbish. Monopoly deal (card based) is great though.

I've not played risk, my mate reckoned it was decent though.

        • Has your mate played more modern board games? Risk is quite antiquated and features a lot of elements that makes it unpleasant to play. For example, very high amounts of down time, the fact it goes on for a rediculously long time for a relatively simplified game, and that it had an open ended time limit.

          • @Ezuku: No, I guess we were both victims of the classics when It comes to board games. He probably got to play risk cos his parents liked the fact it tied him up for hours at a time!

Nowadays I suppose a deck of cards is my goto for strategy. I did play an absolute ton of monopoly deal where I used to work, but it was a varient called millionaire, which seems to have been discontinued, and is incredibly pricey to buy nowadays.

Any modern games that you recommend in particular?

            • @Robc: It really depends what you like? Do you like direct competition (kill each other) or more indirect competition (who gets the most points)?

              • @surg3on: Ohhh, kill sounds good. Cathartic.

                • +1

@Robc: Kemet is great for that.

I took the risk and bought it.

    Thanks OP.

It's Risk, Jerry! The game of world conquest.

The Ukraine? You know what the Ukraine is. It's a sitting duck. A road apple, Newman. The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble. I think it's time to put the hurt on the Ukraine…

20+ years on and Seinfeld is still in our daily vocab. <3

  • Bring back the old map where Ukraine is blue and Russia is green

  • Wow I’m surprised this hasn’t been cancelled for ‘promoting imperialism’ or something

      • +2

I bet you are great fun at monopoly games.

  • Don't fall for other Risk sets that don't have little plastic men and canons in them, some versions just use tiny cardboard symbols.

    • What really?

      • Actually the symbols are plastic, but they may as well be cardboard. This is the set I'm talking about https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313819699647

I don't know about these days, but it used to be that this was the only set the department stores in Australia carried.

  • Is this enjoyable for just 2 people to play?

    • Definitely not. With 2 players you're taking away all concept of diplomacy, leaving you with a below average, long, and simplified tactical game. There would be many better games to play.

      • Cheers many thanks , anything you'd recommend

How experienced with games are you and how heavy a game are you after? Do you want a "dudes on a map" style wargame or do you prefer other stuff? Level of interaction / opposition between players? Are you only ever going to play with 2 or do you want something that also plays more?

The "dudes on a map" format tends not to work well at 2 players since without additional players there's no self balancing and often 1 player will get a little ahead and snowball their way to victory with little opportunity for the other player to recover.

My favourite 2 player games in no particular order are:

          7 wonders duel
Very different to the non duel version of the game. Essentially picking cards from a complex arrangement of cards in order to build tableau. A lot about forcing you opponent to pick cards they don't want to choose. High level of player interaction and moderately complex.

          Patchwork
Most boring theme in a game ever, but actually a lot of fun. Kinda tetris-like. Easy to learn and low complexity but has a lot of depth.

          Mr Jack Pocket
Deduction game for 2 people where 1 is trying to hide from the other. Simple rules but again a lot of depth

          Hive (pocket)
Chess like abstract game. Lots of fun. Free android version if you want to try it out. The pocket version if literally small enough to fit into a large pocket.

          Spirit island
Settlers of Catan where you all play Catan and all join forces to try and… Murder and horrify the settlers into leaving. High complexity, actually plays up to 4 but all players need to be good at games.

          • @Ezuku: Cheers for great reply must look the up👍

        • +1 7 Wonders Duel is a great game to play if there's only 2 people :)

    • Numan and Kramer seemed to have a lot of fun playing it two player https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyNWVdExM24

One of the greatest boardgames made.

The hours to finish and the paranoid player who thinks everyone is ganging up on em & the sneaky bastard that hides in OZ watching everyone kill each other then sticks his head out at the end. Lol

    • I wonder if we can win in the end IRL

    • AU is my secret bunker.

risk is available as a mobile app if you want to play with people over or dont want to buy this

    • I really enjoy the mobile version and got the board version to play with family but have only managed a few games as it is a lot slower.
