Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM (for Canon) $418 - Free Shipping + 1 Year Wty @ DWI (Grey Market)

40

I think this is a pretty good price for this Canon mount lens. Unfortunately for me and many others, it is $20 extra for Nikon mount (bringing it roughly on par with eBay prices). This is a grey market, non-Australian stock. The DWI 1 Year warranty is included.
What do you guys think of this price?

Take this price to CR Kennedy
(or any retailer that sells sigma and get them to contact CR Kennedy) and get them to price match.

Grey market prices with a full 2 year australian warranty.

Worth noting that CRK will add GST and shipping (if applicable) to whatever price you're asking them to match.

Not true. CRK takes the grey+shipping price and ships to you for the same price. They fudge the receipt so that the price includes a GST. They do not add the GST to the matched price.

  • I'd personally go for the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 but if you were after this lens specifically then the price isn't too bad.

Also keep in mind that Sigma has a newer version of the 10-20mm which has a constant f3.5 aperture. Up to you guys though if the advantages are worth the higher price.

    • recently bought that 2.8 lens, now struggling to reason for spending $550 on it, given its such a specialty lens, as in , its uses compared to my 17-50 2.8 etc.

It's not gonna get much use if you don't do a lot of ultra wide angle shots. 17mm is wide enough for a lot of people. But if you're a bit of an UWA junkie then the Tokina is an excellent quality lens. At one point I had the Tokina, the Sigma and the Canon 10-22mm. The Tokina was noticeably better in terms of image quality than the Sigma and the Canon (although I did like that the Canon was smaller than the other two). I also did a lot of indoor shots where I didn't have a tripod so the f2.8 was very useful for me. Depends on what you need really, to each his/her own.

    • Good point. I have read and heard some really good things about the Tokina 11-16. I only own an entry level (D3100) Nikon however. No focus motor built in. I don't believe the Tokina will Auto focus with my camera is this correct?

The f3.5 Sigma I think would be a great lens, however I couldnt justify the extra cash. I would probably get most of my use out of this lens shooting landscape. Which I would probably have at f9 or f11 or somewhere near close. So for me personally it wouldnt be worth the extra…

Not sure about autofocus on your Nikon since I was shooting with Canon back then but I think ken Rockwell has an extensive review of the Tokina (he mostly shoots Nikon). I don't recall if he mentioned anything about the AF but I think he did.

The drawback of the Tokina is the limited zoom range when compared to other wide angle lenses but I was surprised at how much better the images were from the Tokina so I sold off the Sigma. If I didn't defect over to Micro Four Thirds, I'd still be shooting with the Tokina. Built more solidly too, like I could use it as a weapon :P

All that said, the Sigma isn't bad and if you don't need the wider aperture then I think you can make do with it. I shot with it for quite some time and got some really nice pictures with it.

Unfortunately, Ken Rockwell gets very excited about a lot of stuff, so I often used to wonder if he was being paid to "review" things. But then I got smart and stopped reading his crap :-)

        • Yeah I'm personally not a fan of the guy. You gotta sift through all the crap to get some facts ;) To be honest, his Tokina 11-16mm review is one of maybe 2-3 of his reviews that I've ever read.

      • It won't auto focus with your camera but it is only out of focus within 2m so you could leave it in infinity for the majority of your shooting. I have the same issues as yourself because I have a d5100 and will likely get the tokina. If you can wait there is a pro II version of that lens which has a motor that should come out in september, but you could expect paying a lot for it.

I used to have this lens nikon mount, took it to europe and got some really special shots. Don't think it's worth it for constant aperture as i pretty much only used it @ 10mm anyway.

  • DWI is crap. Bought a galaxy note from them last week and the phone is locked plus the box is opened.

    • Don't know about ur phone. But for cameras and lenses, dwi is one of the best!

actually the box should be open cuz DWI has to unlock it.
      most greys are like that

      • But I've bought Galaxy Note and it's a grey import… completely sealed and unlocked…

  • This lens is good and gives a warmer tone than the Tokina variant. Tokina has the upper hand on sharpness even wide open. I used to have both, but I held on to the Tokina longer.

  • Fantastic lens - I paid almost that much a few years ago, second hand.

Jump on it if you want to take landscapes. I barely take it off my body.
