HP Microserver N40L 2GB 250GB - $203.75 + Shipping

280

since past posts i've noticed people go crazy over these machines, anyway here it is again the infamous HP Microserver N40L. Noticed this today while browsing google on the N40L. cheapest i've seen in a while, from when i got it earlier this year.

it does mention the price is a weekend special, unsure when it will end.

i've never heard of the company or bought from them before so unsure about their reputation. the business does have an ABN and contact telephone number and is located in SA. they maybe able to offer pick up for those local.

for those unsure of the specs, see here

Thats just laughable, I can see these flying out the door :/

        haha

  • Doubt pick up is available

Adelaide customers please note that we operate an online ordering service exclusively.

  • This is the cheapest deal around ATM.

It would be $224 shipped to me which is ok, but not quite as good as the recent SE deal. Their cheap shipping meant that it ended up being $221 to me; but since the SE deal is over, this is now the best price AFAIK.

  • funny the sites menu it just like mwaves???

  • I've got one - it's good, does the job well.

I would suggest upgrading the memory though (which is cheap these days).

Also - on some sites it says it supports up to 2Gb per bay. (up to 8Gb total).
I don't know if this means 3Gb drives aren't supported, or if they just weren't around at the time of writing.

    • +2

TB you mean. And people have used 3TB drives successfully.

    • Any links for cheap memory sticks ?

  • It has been promoted again and again with that similar price, i'm starting to think that that is the regular price for that server now.

(or rather, seller passes the $100 discount that originally from HP (that i know applies to UK and US))

For those in Perth, I bought one from here about 2 weeks ago: http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?InventoryItemId=608110
List price was $249 but I asked for an online price match (from itech I think) and he just checked his system and said he could do it for $229. Only if you can pickup though.

    • +1

Thanks for that. I've been looking for one, but shipping to Perth is usually a lot, and PLE had higher prices.

Shipping to Perth for this deal is $42!!!

      • -1

PLE is a joke when come to shipping & complaint
had really bad experience with them & will never buy again!

        • +2

Its only a deal for pickup anyway. I have bought heaps from them and never had an issue

        • Depends on the branch perhaps. Bentley branch is great.

    • I bought a N40L from PLE a couple of weeks ago. They were very helpful. I was happy to pay $249 as I was worried a courier would throw the box about and I need to be sure my server is undamaged and will not give me a latent problem in 4 months because someone mishandled it. So, the extra $20 or so is worth it to me.

  • just a quick note regarding the comments about postage - these things are suprisingly solid/heavy. I finally relented and bought one the other week, and was amazed at how solid they are. Very well made.

    • +1

that may be true, but if some places manage to sell 15kg of dumbbells for $29 shipped….
$42 to send that server to Perth is rather amazing.

      • Yes but see dumbbells aren't valuable and they're quite compact. I think the transit insurance factors into the cost here.

      • Couriers use cubic weight, not dead weight…

        • +1

That's why couriers lack that explosive strength you can only get from doing deadlifts! :p

  • +1

How would these things compare purely as a NAS device against something like the Synology DS212J

    • +1

Depends on what you want to do with your nas, but these are very different items.
I've bought the 40L and have worked with the ds212 (not j)

      40L/ds212j

no operating system / full nas os and apps
x86-64 cpu, can run windows, linux, xbsd… / arm cpu, synology os only?
      ram 2G exp to 8G / 0.25G fixed
      4 or 5 3.5" hdd / 2
      better cpu / worse
      2 pcie expansion slots / 0
      fairly quiet / quieter
      6 usb 2.0 / 2
      1 vga out / 0
      small / smaller
      etc.

They both lack usb 3.0, but you can do that with an expansion card in the 40L, or by buying the ds212 for more $

For a simple nas, the 212j is quick and easy. It works almost out of the box, and may have all of your needs built in. The 40L is more work upfront but is more powerful has more features and is more customizable.

    must resist …

  • can anyone confirm that i can use external storage (connected via usb) to do all the torrent work?

    • +2

I'd really want to find out.
I'd assume this would be more flexible in the long run but does consume more power and bit noisier.

    • Yes it has usb ports so can use as any other pc.

    • You meant connect a external drive to N40L? There's no difference to you using a external storage to connect to a laptop, for example. My laptop downloads directly to my 1TB pocket drive via USB, no dramas. The N40L comes with an esata port, and lots of USB ports (>6, can't remember exactly). You just need to install a OS on the 250GB HDD that comes the n40l for your torrent software.

      • not just connect to transfer data, but using the external hdd as torrent destination (downloading and uploading). i want to run torrent 24/7 so i dont want it keep writing and reading to my new internal hdd. my external hdd is fine. once the movie finish i will transfer them to my internal hdd.

        can?

        • Yes you can, to download directly to your external drive (destination for uploads and downloads). I don't use my N40L for torrents yet, as I'm waiting for the price on HDDs to come down.

    • +1

      Yes, you can.
As long as your OS can read/write from/to that usb disk, which most OS can.

i know support is up to 8GB memory but has anyone tried 16GB?

    • 16gb is not supported.
8gb should be enough for server use, especially if you are planning to run a variant of Linux or Unix/BSD.
If you want speed, consider a small capacity SSD to hold your operating system and raid across standard 3.5" drives. You can use EEC memory which is more fault tolerant than non-EEC, but costs more. Amazon sell 8GB of compatible EEC for around $70 - for some reason, they will ship 2 x single 4gb, but not a pair of 4gb modules.
The link for the single 4gb EEC module is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002LBCUPO/ref=oh_details_o…
I ordered 2 and am waiting for them to arrive.

      • Do you forget:

        • HP Microservers have an INTERNAL USB socket

Write your NAS (or any other) software onto it, not the 250 GB HDD.
That was, you get 4x HDD's for your FreeNAS to manage (not 3).

        • No, you are correct. But, when you compare the transfer speeds of a USB stick with those of the HDD you will get a massive reduction in performance due to the comparatively low transfer rates of a USB drive. It is easy to connect an additional cable to enable a 4 + 1 configuration.

        • Not to mention USB would be a bottleneck so don't go putting your pagefile on it…

  • They don't have stock and have terms and conditions that make their participation in any transaction optional. I'll pass.

  • I've often wondered if - using the info provided in a much earlier deal - folks can (once again) order these -directly- from HP.

They were N36L's at the time, but HP charged $199 for the N36L and NIL for S+H, unlike the rest, who seem to charge growing amounts for the same uncertain quality of S&H service…

With 1 or 2 middle vendors away from HP, the prices rise, as (possibly) do the chances for multiple handling instances (each with it -own- chance of unreported droppage).

I got one from Spot IT!

1x N40L HP Micro Server (and then I bought the following items)
    1 x ATI 6450 card $40 from GreenBox IT
    2 x 4GB Kingston non-ecc ram
1 x Microsoft IR Extender and original MS MCE remote (swapped it for 2gb ecc ram i removed)
1 x eSata to Sata cable from Deal Extreme 3 dollars including shipping from China (run the esata cable back inside the box and use it for internal drive)
1 x HDD Silence kit from PCCG for $9, turns the 5.25" bay into a bay that holds 2 x 3.5" SATA INTERNAL drives
    1 x normal sata cable
1 x MOLEX to dual sata power cable (3 bucks) to power the two new sata drives in the optical drive bay!

so now I have a box that can hold 6 drives and running Linux Mint (boots straight into XBMC)

all I need is a PS3 PlayTV so I can use it as a dual tuner and get FTA/epg setup and recording PVR functions :)

  • Deal appears to be done, "Sale price" is now $310.76

    • Yeah bummer - I was just going to order tonight ;)
