  • Recently bought a Ranchillo from them. Great service and took time to explain everything quite well inspite of buying from ebay.

Used to be 899 with ebay monthly discounts

Yep and make sure you get the M model too. E model is hard to resell and a bit annoying imo.

OP you might want to mention this is the E model…

      • I’d rather it switch off after 30min. To me it’s a safety feature.

      • It's easy to replace the switch , just order the replacement switch from the M model and swap them out .. no more timer now you can connect it to your smart plug and heat your machine up in the morning

It's okay, I've got spare mutagen and can hook you up

Best machine ever. I have the 2012 model running all day since 8 years.

    • Do you have a PID installed? I m wondering whether its worth the investment

      • +1

No I have not. I just follow the indicator lights on the machine.

      • I had an earlier model Silvia and the PID kit I put on it was worth every cent and then some.

        • Did you DIY it or got someone to install it? I might mod it post warranty. I have a v6.

    • V3s are fkn perfect

    • My boss keeps telling me about this too

  • We service the Silvia and still see the version 1 in operation

Our version 1 is still going strong, I don't even know how old it is ? maybe 12-15 years ? Used most days. Had to rewire one switch and press the internal reset once and that's it.

  • I am trying to decide between a Silvia or a Lelit Anna with a built in PID. Roughly the same price. Any thoughts?

    • I would go for for Rancilio when I’m honest.

      • +6

What would you go when you are not honest?

    • +1

From what I've heard, it comes down to Rancilio being built like a tank but Lelit Anna easier to get into and PID is a nice touch.. I went with the Lelit Anna since everything is repairable/replaceable anyway and I prefer a more beginner friendly machine

      • Let us know how you go the next years. Rancilio never disappointed me and is still on top of the best machines in that price class. It doesn’t need a lot of practice to make a good coffee with it. I don’t need a fancy machine to show off with either. I show off with the result making amazing coffee with the machine!

        • Had a Lelit Anna for eight years now. I should probably send it in for a service, but hate to be without it! It has been a legend of a machine, doing one to five coffees a day. The only thing is the digits on the PID display are blowing out slowly.

I bought mine in December 2006! Still going strong.

    • Wow, yours lasted even longer, which is good to hear.
I was already very happy with mine, bought 2003, but the pump went in 2015, after 12 years. It got used quite a bit, 3-4 times a day, so I thought that was fair enough. Also, fortunately, was able to get a replacement pump for it from eBay for less than $50, and since then it was going strong again.

Equally happy with the Rocky grinder, once was given some Vietnamese coffee beans, but there was a stone in it that made some horrendous noise during grinding. Fortunately, did not damage it.

      • +1

I have a Rocky too. I just looked up my order and I bought the Rocky in October 2007. From memory I was buying ground beans between the 2 dates. So that's been a great machine too. The only thing I've replaced on that is the burrs. I love that this stuff is built so well.

Of course, since that date, I've also moved onto roasting green beans.

  • I have Gaggia Classic from 2010. It is great but wish for better steam power. Would the Rancillio be a huge upgrade?

    • Can't you upgrade the steam wand with a Rancillio, thought that was a common upgrade

      • +1

Yes, i did this and made a huge difference. Cost about $50 and took 5 minutes to install.

  • Make sure you get a good grinder if you plan on learning to pull a good shot on this machine

  • +5

I picked one of these up on the side of the road from a family who must have upgraded, its a little rusty in the drip tray area. Cleaned it up and it's been running well for at least a year now. Not sure how old it is but i suspect they had it for at least a few years based on how 'used' it looked.

    • That's a great find!

Last two digits of the manufacture date will be in the back on a sticker , you can work out the model from the date .. nice find by the way ! The rust in the black frame beneath the drip tray is a common issue in the older machine , the whole frame can be replaced for ~150

Please do your research before buying this
If you don’t understand why you’d buy this over a Gaggia or a Breville Dual Boiler then don’t buy it
It’s a much loved machine and people love it for the aftermarket modding & ease of repair however it is not for everyone especially the average home user.
At stock, it might feel pretty underwhelming for the price however if you’re willing to mod it then it’ll definitely be a worthwhile purchase.

If you’re curious about the possible ‘hassle’ you can look up common internal mods such as Preinfusion PID, Precision Shower Screen, and OPV adjustments.

    • +1

This is where I don't understand why people buy this machine. With all the upgrades it still tends to be on the cheaper side but why not buy a better machine at that point. For example the expobar leva is at 2k which is a brilliant machine and

    • +1

I completely agree. It was a great machine 15-20 years ago when the only alternatives where HX machines for triple the price or $100 trash from Sunbeam, and I had one and modded it and loved it, but there is much more competition these days. Breville Dual Boiler prices seem nuts at the moment, but if there are still deals around it's a much better option.

    • +2

Not just mods, but also longevity. If you're the kind of person who might upgrade in a few years, it's probably not worth it. These machines last decades with little hassle. We have one at work which has made maybe a dozen coffees a day for 8 years with the only maintenance being general cleaning, and serviced twice to replace seals. You're paying for the build of a commercial machine in a domestic package.

  • Op, any grinder deals to go with this machine?

  • Great machine! Bought it from the same seller last time with grinder and bench (all from Rancilio). Compared to my mate’s $5k rocket machine, the quality is the same or even better! My strong recommendation is buying a whole set as it is much better value!

    • If I could go back I wouldn't buy the rocky grinder, since the machine is so grind sensitive I'd save that money for something better and get better shots out of the Silvia

  • Got one in 2009 from these guys and still going strong all these years later.

  • Owner since November 2012. Used daily & would repurchase in a heartbeat. I will purchase a pid eventually but using the tried and true temp surfing method. see here https://www.swisswuff.ch/wordpress/?p=385#:~:text=It%20reach…
Still using a cheapish Sunbeam cafe series grinder with a plastic shim mod under the Burr to have a bit more play room with the grind.
