Is eBay Plus Worth It?

Subjective question based on spending habits. I've been on the fence with eBay Plus for a long time now and lately noticed they are upping the frequency of discounts, yet I'm still not sure if it will pay for itself. This year I spent about $700 so far on eBay on around 10 different items. With those purchase I can't see if the Plus items would have saved me in any way.

What has been your experience, is eBay Plus paying for itself?

Yep. Good when it's almost free.

Yeah I cancelled mine this year. Barely feeling any benefit. Probably switching to Amazon.

    • I just went to cancel (due 15/4), and I've just been given a $30 voucher, to stay until 27/10/22

        still not worth it.

Admittedly most of what I do is through Amazon, due to the speed. One thing that annoys me is when an Ebay seller says Auspost, or Auspost express, and it gets delivered via Fastway or Couriers Please a week later.

          • +1

@BewareOfThe Dog: I got an oil filter delivered from Melbourne to Brisbane with couriers please from an eBay sale in 2 days. Auspost often sits as "we've got it" for a week

            • @dmbminaret: Probably also depends on who's fulfilling it. :)
Fastway seem to act as a distributor centre. The return address is usually fastways depot.

Just my own experience, hope it helps. I have both Amazon prime and ebay plus at the moment. I always search on both sites when I need something and yes Amazon normally cheaper and shipping is faster. I spent lot more on Amazon than Ebay. Below are the reasons I still have Ebay plus:

    1. with previous $50 now $40 voucher come with Ebay plus, it doesnt cost a lot or cost nothing. The two times I signed up ebay plus were when I found something on Ebay I can use the voucher straight away, Ebay plus is just a bonus for me.
    2. with $40 voucher I still pay $9 for ebay plus, with monthly voucher and some once off vouchers. I easily got it back. It is not always easy to spend it sometimes but it is achievable. I always spend the money on a pharmacy who has competitive price. An example is, I buy cream for our baby ongoing, other shops selling it for 17 - 20 dollars including Amazon, I can get it from Ebay for $16 and last time I spent $11 with a $5 voucher.
    3. I have two occasions recently have to return items, one was a Ebay plus item the return process was a breeze. I only needed to print return label, make sure it covers the original address and leave it outside my door. The other item was not an Ebay plus item, all I had to do was print return label, take it to post office and post it, I didnt have to pay for the postage so didnt have to claim it back from paypal.

All in all, there are benefits comes with Ebay plus that I may get it again, but only when it costs not much, as I know I will get it back in coming 12 months it also gives me some peace of mind

I think the returns part of the eBay Plus is an underappreciated benefit of having it. A mate of mine who doesn't have eBay Plus had to return something and there seemed to be a lot of back and forth over something that should have been handled in one session.

I bought some generic items that supposedly fit a machine that I have. They didn't fit. When I went to get a refund, I didn't have to explain anything, take photos or do anything really. Just pressed a button, printed out a label and sent it back. I don't remember if I had to pay for postage as it was a long time ago. Probably not.

      • If it wasn't fit for purpose, you wouldn't have needed to $49/year to return it.
It really only have value if you ordered the wrong thing or changed your mind.

        • There shouldn't be a hassle but unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way.

Amazon normally cheaper is certainly not my experience.
eBay is invariably cheaper unless there's a mega deal running on Amazon.

I will never pay full price for Plus, but it's not that hard to get it to pay for itself IMHO if you activate it with one of the bonus offers and can spend the Voucher on something you needed anyway.

      I've paid $2 so far for Plus (2x $49 Vouchers) with around a 4-5 month gap in-between.

Amazon, is only really worth it if you value the Prime Video or Gaming additions as they have free shipping on $49 spend anyway. I'll consider renewing Amazon Prime when Wheel of Time S2 is released.

Key is with Prime you don't need to wait until you have $39/$49 worth of stuff to get free delivery. You save the most money by buying stuff when that item alone is at it's cheapest price. Good for the hip pocket, not so good for the environment.

      • Amazon normally cheaper is certainly not my experience.

        Get a tracker like camels

    • now $40 voucher

      Is this still working?

In the past year there have been some good BoozeBud bargains with ebay plus but they seem to be becoming scant now. With a $50 voucher it was a no-brainer but this year I'm not renewing.

    • +2

worth noting that boozebud doesn't post to Tasmania, or several other locations, so it won't be worth it if you live in any of these locations:

Northern Territory, QLD Far North, QLD Regional, SA Regional, Tasmania, VIC Regional, WA Regional, WA Remote

I have used eBay a fair bit since signing up in 2010 I've had around 1,500 transactions however since Amazon Prime has popped up that has slowed down massively.
In 2022 for example I have had 6 eBay purchases and I find myself using it mostly for used items now. I'm not sure if I will continue with eBay Plus. I have had 22 Amazon purchases in that time.

    • Wow what are you buying? Business related expenses I hope.

That's a purchase every 2nd day for the past 12 years.

  • +2

I think if you can afford both it's good to have eBay Plus as I think eBay Plus does pay for itself as there are some good eBay Plus only deals. I pretty much stick to eBay Plus vendors too, as the after sales service and warranty stuff seems to be a lot easier to deal with.

If you could only choose one, it would have to be Prime. With access to the streaming services and free monthly games, it really is a no-brainer.

If you cancel Ebay plus just before it expires, you get a $30 voucher to stay.

So that every year so effectively costs $20. They throw enough vouchers to barely make it worth it but with cancel its ok.

I hate Jeff Bozo so much I refused to sign up for Prime.

Always curious about Amazon as whenever I go to look up prices it seems that eBay is cheaper for me normally, plus the fact I only buy things on eBay sales when they have 15-17% off. I get the most out of eBay though buying booze and the refunds have been a quick and easy with eBay plus, express free shipping is good too. I'd never pay full price for eBay plus though.

eBay Plus is pointless. Anything brand new is generally cheaper and delivered quicker via Amazon.

Most of the perks of eBay are purchasing second hand - and Plus is rarely involved or beneficial for those items.

  • Like anything it depends on what you’re buying and how often. I had it a while ago but never used eBay enough to see the value. I use Amazon and Catch way more, so get WAY more value from Catch’s OnePass

  • Apples and oranges.

Prime is better as a paid subscription service absolutely 300% but eBay plus is great if it cost nearly nothing. I have saved bucket loads (in the thousands) on eBay plus with sales particularly for work, Dell computers and ubiquity gear.

The other handy thing is buying from retailers like good guys, Myer, big W etc and getting free postage.

Amazon rocks for groceries and stuff from the states.

  • Most of the eBay Plus stuffs on offer are not what I wanted to have and many sellers incorporate P/H cost in their price. So the $49 fee is no gainer for me.

  • hahahaha (it's a joke). No

  • +1

    No

  • I personally cancelled my ebay plus, didnt see much benefit in having it.

  • Not worth the trouble. I cancelled my ebay plus subscription at the start of the year, they kept billing me even though I no longer had access to ebay plus. Spent an long time on messenger last month to get my owing bill cleared and to make sure they cancelled ebay plus on their end. This month I have been billed again!

  • Most useless subscription to have existed.
Only sign up if they give you a $50 voucher.

  • the prices I see on the unsearchable ebay plus items looks like the "benefit" is priced in.
I can get "free returns" on AliExpress without paying a membership fee.
There is no comparison between eBay and Amazon Prime. Totally different league.

  • They seem to be only giving selling promos to sellers through eBay plus now, pretty annoying
