        • Plex has built in tracking of what you watch etc across different devices. Kodi doesn't, you need to set up a database etc for that. Plex is much simpler to set up and use.

        • I'm with you, this is exactly my setup and not understanding why I would want bigger and more expensive box to do the same thing when I have zero issues now.

    • Plexkodiconnect you get the best of both worlds

      https://github.com/croneter/PlexKodiConnect

PKC synchronizes your media from your Plex server to the native Kodi database. Hence:

Use virtually any other Kodi add-on
Use any Kodi skin, completely customize Kodi's look
Browse your media very fluently (cached artwork)
Automatically get additional artwork (more than Plex offers)
Use Plex features with a Kodi interface

  • how does this compare to LibreELEC running on a pi4b? other than hdr isnt super good but 4k works well.

  • I have had mine about 4 years I guess. It worked brilliantly til the Android 11 update ruined everything. Things got pretty tragic.
.had to reboot and sometimes disconnect and reconnect power.

Eventually I deleted my Plex media server and started again. I have content on 16tb USB drive and have adopted storage a 128gb extreme pro USB 3.2.

Recreating my server/library was a pain but it's now working like it used to. No complaints about it at all. Very happy

    • are you me - except I cant fix my plex server. I will need to try a factory reset

    • what about the 11 update do you think killed it?

Just issues with running a plex server or other issues as well?

  • +2

I'm gonna wait until next gen, maybe they'll upgrade the tegra GPU

    • +2

it can already do 2160p HDR with ease.

      u planning on streaming 8K HDR12 content?

  • I've got a new smart tv with plex, YT and netflix - do I need this ?

  • OS/Firmware 9 onwards has issues with Foxtel Login and unable to fix post 9.01 too - happy to be corrected if its fixed
Both Nvidia and Foxtel havent been able to provide any assistance. Issue source believed to be with latter.
So dont firmware update it otherwise really good product.
    Google foxtel login AF4013 error

    • +4

your issue there is having foxtel in the first place

    • +1

Nvidia can’t do anything about it, it’s entirely on Foxtel to upgrade the app for Android 11.
Based on previous experiences the guess is you’ll be waiting at least 6 months for a fix.

    • Use the Kodi Foxtel Go add-on instead, set Device ID to {username} and run it on as many devices as you like without multiroom. Better still, use a relative/friend’s login and avoid Foxtel’s usurious fees altogether.

  • If anybody can help configuring my Plex on my Nvidea Shield Pro I'd be forever grateful. Have a Hisense Q8, and the native Plex App works better than the one on Android via the Shield. Internets fine. Download at 25mbps typical speeds.

I'm streaming from a mates Plex server, and when using Android (shield), there is constant buffering issues and can't get anything better than 700P resolution without serious buffering issues.

Any tips and tricks would be awesome!

Reading through this thread, I must be the only person on OzB using Emby instead of Plex. Never been happier after making the switch!

    • +1

And I think I'm the only one using Nova & SMB 😂

    • Meh, I used Emby for years. I don't see the value add in Emby any more if all you need is a pretty front end for your movies. (Plex does that fine).

    • Currently testing out Emby after being made aware of it from the lifetime deal a few months ago. My absolute favourite feature is the ability to play videos at faster playback speeds such from 1.25x to 2x; followed closely by the feature to change aspect ratio to 'fill'. Yes I know that is blasphemous amongst viewers but the time savings are awesome and I use a Fold phone and feel wasteful when the whole screen isn't being used

      • +1

I like that it just works 99% of the time without any stuttering or buffering, and it doesn't "lose" my (Plex) server every other day, nor require a software update four times a week!

I get the feeling that Plex became too intensive/bloated for my (modest) PC setup, whereas Emby seems to be much less demanding.

        • Yes, I love how you can do everything on the app that you can on the desktop version as well such as fixing metadata and even seeing what other people streaming (I host content for family )

    • No I am looking at using it to, all the research I have done suggests it is BETTER than plex, I think plex is just more popular because it has been around for longer, hell some TVs even come with it pre-installed.

      • The app does cost around $7 to purchase after the 14-day trial period expires. That's the only downside.

Emby Premiere is $100+ (similar to Plex Lifetime), but I haven't looked into it.

  • My VodafoneTV has a "Live TV" button to watch free to air TV. Is there an equivalent in nVidia Shield?

    • I have both, no there isnt

  • Does anyone has a recommendation for a cheap Plex device or any other wifi device that I can run a HDD of movies off?

    • Raspberry pi4 perhaps? I think it retails around $115.

  • So I purchased this, works great, handling 4k remux beautifully, but now struggling to play anime. They are mkv, with Stereo AAC and ASS subtitles. I have a Sony Android TV (x900f) that plays it, but the shield just gets Unable to play media

    • +1

I'd recommend installing vlc player on the shield. I had it on my old shield and never had any issues with playback, you could also try just player which is equally good.

      • yeah I was hoping to do everything via Plex as I like the UI + tracking features

        • +1

Ah fair enough! I heard there are some issues with plex and latest version of Android TV on shield. You can try plex addon through kodi as well, very similar UI and it will still track your usage.

          • @Groovyuvi: Thanks for replying, yeah I installed PKC on Kodi

  • is it true this don't play DV fully??

  • Are these really any better than that 2015 pro model? I have the 2015 but I think that it is on its last legs and I don't think that there is a new shield model coming anytime soon.

    • I don't think there is a huge difference, do you have the AI up scaling on yours? If not, apparently it works very well on this newer model. The resale value on these is pretty good, id sell the old and replace it with the new one. I have just sold my non pro 2017 version for $200.

  • Want to replace an old Chromecast for the wife's family, who ALL use iOS devices. Would it be better to buy this or an Apple TV ?

    • +2

I am not an Apple person myself, but I faced this same question recently for someone (a lifetime Apple devotee) wanting a media player for their new Sony TV (which has the Android interface and caused complaint!).

They will LOVE the familiarity of the interface on the Apple TV 4K. If they're just using it to stream Netflix, Binge etc and watch YouTube etc, I would say go for the ATV. Having seen it in action, it is smoooooth…I think the fans call it BUTTERY SMOOTH.

      • Thank you for the insight! I will keep my eyes peeled on the next bargain then :)

        • +1

There are very very few bargains for the ATV! Even getting cashback is almost impossible. Apple items are routinely excluded.

    • +2

The Apple TV is a much better box unless you want to do emulation, especially if you use iOS devices.

  • Waited too long and deal is gone now haha. Oh well sticking with Google TV Chromecast for now til next deal.
