Might be good for everyone that picked up a Weber in the recent eBay sale

Also what’s everyone’s tips on seasoning? I’ve just been cleaning it down, then wipe up excess, and heat on stove top.

I see others who fully bake it for hours afterwards and wondering is it really necessary?

I finish cooking, wipe it out and then I just wash mine with hot water and a scrubbing brush, then re-oil it and put it away for next use.

I bake it 2-3 times when I first get a new pan at max heat for 2hrs and then leave it in there until cool. Then for regular use just water + brush to clean and then reheat on the hob to dry. If it looks a bit sad and dry (matte?) I might give it a spritz with oil (those decor spray bottles are handy for this). Shouldn’t need to re-bake it unless you accidentally burn off the seasoning with too much heat or acid.

      • This is what I do. Oven season to create the base layers, then just wash and oil after each use.

Mine are starting to look a little shabby so an oven re-seasoning may be on the cards….it's been 3-4yrs since I originally did it.

Finish cooking, stove fire to dry and then wipe down with oil. Don't use metal to clean the cast iron

      • The chain mail scrubbers have been recommended for removing tough grime from cast iron, but definitely don't use steel wool to clean.

I haven't used a chain mail one to be fair, but even lodge sell them for use on their products.

Chainmail scrubber was the best thing I bought for my cast iron skillet. It’s very good for removing burnt stuff. Maybe next I will buy some cooking lessons.

      • I had a cheap cast griddle pan from aldi, after 1st cook it cleaned up easy with hot water and a soft scrubber.
Will see how cook number 2 goes…

      • Years of cooking with metal utensils and cleaning with steel wool has given the bottom of my pan a baby smooth finish. I can cook eggs on it without oil if I get the pan hot enough.

You'll need a way finer grit and a lot of manual effort to sand away the seasoned layer.

I wash with water and a brush, then apply some oil and wipe it with a paper towel, pop it on the stove for 3 minutes to dry and then put it away

For a brand new pan, I would wash with dish washing soap to get all the factory/supply chain dirt and grime out. Once clean and dry, I'd season it with high breaking point cooking oil (please dont try your Shells or Mobil 1s :-)) and let it sit, ready to cook.

I have used Avocado Oil (Coles own brand is fine) a lot initially to bed the seasoning in. My pan required a few applications before it got to satisfactory levels. Now I cook, clean it with hot running water (no soap required usually), dry it and spread a few drops of oil and put it away.

I was told if you can do fried eggs without sticking, your pan is well seasoned!

      • I'd just add to this that with lodge i sand them down first with an electric sander. They're not finished well enough to create a smooth seasoned surface.

    • Oil Salt and Heat.

  • I never seem to get seasoning to work even baking 3 or 4 times…
Eggs and bacon stick like a mofo

I think this version may be the same but with a lid for just under $20 extra (currently $55.17), if worthwhile:
