NVMe or Sata SSD for Elitedesk G2 Upgrade

Hi All

Im currently upgrading an Elitedesk G2 which has a normal HDD at the moment.

Its going to be mainly for basic office use, but also for some gaming (gamepass).

I was wanting to get the HDD sorted and was wondering what is best? I believe i can get a NVME drive but will need an adaptor for it. Alternatively i can just grab a sata ssd and slot it in. I was thinking i would keep a larger HDD in it for the games to be installed on, so cant imagine i need anything bigger than 500gb for the SSD (maybe even smaller….?)

Any cheap suggestions?

Thanks

Which one? The Elitedesk 800 G2 for example can take a NVME without any extra bits.

Get the NVME as then you can hopefully use it in the next PC as it will be faster in the new PC than SATA.

Samsung 870 EVO or similar are great. 250GB or 500GB.

Centrecom, for example, have the 250GB for $75 and the 500GB for $94. I'd go with the 500GB personally for breathing room and piece of mind.

    • Worthwhile paying the extra vs a crucial MX500 or WD Green?

Anecdotally, I've always preferred Samsung SSD's - the 860/870 EVO and evo/pro's in the M.2 form factor. I've used other brands in elitedesk G1's - crucial and sandisk. They've been fine too, no noticeable performance issues. If I wanted to get a larger SSD - both of my 'desks were 128GB, I'd just go with a Samsung and forget about the price difference. Up to you though, if you see yourself using it for a few years then a larger robust drive is the way to go.

  • are u putting a graphics card in there?

    • Put a GTX 1650 in already, yep.

      • I have the same one and it is awesome for what I paid.
I used a standard SATA SSD and taped it in the slot under the cd drive (easier and cheaper).

Used to have a 1650 in it.
I didnt do any formal testing but it felt hot so I left space there (use a usb WIFI).
Also took off the custom made side case when I was gaming.
Was hoping to put in an airvent similar to this video

        • Thanks - see any need to go a bigger add or just the smallest available…? Won't be storing any photos/videos etc

          • @JuryWheel: It all depends on you. How long are you going to use this for? Are you planning to upgrade in the next few years?
I agree with some of the other comments here i.e. better to go with 500 if its just $25 difference just for the piece of mind.
I actually upgraded to a Dell 3620 that had an m.2 slot but it didnt matter cos I took over the samsung evo 1gb ssd and 1650. But then again I do some photos and the 1tb was better value at the time.

The 800 G2 has been handed down to my partner who uses it rarely for office stuff. Theres a cheap intel 256gb sata ssd in there with a 500gb HDD which is plenty of space as she doesnt game.
