@dins: Nope, because the idiot in store cancelled my 2nd service so the tech said that the 4g wouldn't work. So I had to sign up to Launtel for tonight. Wonder what they'll offer me but if I didn't get all the free stuff from the points this ordeal wouldn't be worth it…

  • Just wondering, is the invoicing charge done before or after the month?
ie. if it says i will be charged on 26 aug 2022, is that to cover 26/07/22-26/08/22, or to cover 26/08/22-26/09/22?

    • +1

      before, so 27/8-26/9

    • They charge you in advance.

Did NBN churn to Dodo HFC today. Got email from Telstra "We're sorry to see you go, and no further action is required". Dodo service started working fine on existing Router without making any changes.

  • Has anyone tried using Smart Modem 3 as a 4G modem with another SIM? I did briefly test the Telstra backup 4G card and it was only around 20Mbps. I had 120Mbps with Boost SIMs in my place at times.

    • +1

I think you'd need to gain root access first. Whirlpool has some great threads on doing this with Telstra modems

    • -1

I can confirm it does not work with my Amaysim (Optus) SIM. I will try with Felix (Vodafone) and Belong (Telstra) in the coming days.

      • -1

Does not work with Vodafone SIM either. Belong SIM works fine - 120Mbps download / 80 upload. Being able to see nearby Telstra tower from my window, I expected a bit more.

Got a bill for the modem so live chat said just return it at a local store and it'll be waived. Came to store and they said they don't take modem returns. Showed her the chat and she's like 'oh you should have clicked the link to make an appointment', like that will magically give her the knowledge on how to take back the return…

Edit : nvm she said I can dispose of the modem and she ll make a note incase something comes up. Took over 30 mins of back and forth to come up with that but at least now I got a modem out of it lol. Can't wait to repeat this process next week for my other service 😣

    • This is why you should’ve used prepaid mastercard

      • I did, but still don't want to get into a 'debt' over it lol. Didn't mind returning the modem as I can't get it to work with my google mesh but I might give it a proper crack now that I get to keep it

    • How long after you cancelled did this bill come?

      • Cancelled around 25th but because I signed up in store the billing is all screwed and they only generate my bill on the 3rd (billing period was the 1st). She said I was supposed to receive something that I would post back to return the modem as they didn't do it in store. But I didn't receive anything after cancelling apart from the most recent bill.

  • Alright, so they cancelled my current plan which was $1 paid until the 15th, called them up and they generously 'waived' the return fee for my 1st service modem (which was meant to be done yesterday but obv wasnt as she cancelled my current plan instead). And her solution was to give me a 'special offer' of $20 a plan for 6 months, not even a free month when they cancelled my plan. After some argument, she agreed to give me the rest of this month free. Not sure if i have to return the modem since i didnt get it for this 'new' plan and if they applied the cancellation to my 2nd modem, not sure what i can do with 2 modems but oh well. what a headache all around.

Also , live chat told me to return modem in store, person in store says it cant be returned in store, phone rep also says cant return in store?? Apparently we are supposed to post it back to some address? Anyone else got told the same thing?

    • +2

https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/nbn Then go to the bottom: How do I return the modem?

We don’t currently require you to return the modem when you cancel your Upfront Internet plan. You can recycle the modem, or keep it.

      • +1

But it also says this, I didn't do anything after cancelling and they automatically charged for the modem in the next bill

        1. Choose your Upfront Internet plan
If you leave within 24 months, return your modem or pay a $200 non return fee
        • yeah, both are true. it says they don't require us to return the modem. well they don't.. just they'll charge us for it !

          • +2

            @spa: Read the FAQ.

"Currently, you won’t be asked to return the Telstra-supplied modem, or be charged a non-return fee."

            • @[Deactivated]: oh i see, that does seem rather clear.. and they even bold the "won't"

              screenshot taken :P

              • +1

@spa: I took one too. The modem is mine. I will not pay for it.

                • @[Deactivated]: OOo gotta save that ss in the bank when I cancel at the end of month. Can this modem be used for other ISPs?

                  • +1

@MeesusEff: Yes, it can be used for almost all ISPs. The only exception being those that use VLAN, which is basically TPG group. The 4G usually keeps working after you leave, which is handy as a backup.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Ah it didn't work for me yesterday, the tech said it's because my plan was cancelled so the 4g wouldn't work anymore. Or did u mean the 4g component, so that I can add another data sim?

Odd thing is that I can't get it to work with my google wifi. I plug it in, but when I connect to it just says no internet. Gotta figure it out before end of month

                      • +1

@MeesusEff: I meant the actual 4G and included data SIM. My old one still works years after leaving them. Of course I never plug the modem in while my internet is active as this associates the SIM with my account.

You can use any Telstra/Boost SIM in them, or if you jailbreak them, then any SIM can be used.

                        • @[Deactivated]: Its working with my Launtel one so far :) and working on my google wifi too. but now that i thought about it, since the signal is so good now i dont even need it anymore…

                  • @MeesusEff: I moved to Dodo Nbn. Didn't have to do any changes in the configuration. Switched to Dodo even without restarting the modem.

    • aaaand theyve charged me $75 for this month despite being told repeatedly i wouldnt be charged until September onwards. no words can describe the utter incompetence…

  • Cancelled NBN service via live chat. 4G has been disconnected as well. No one mentioned I should return the modem, so I'm keeping it. They can try and bill my Coles Prepaid Mastercard with 0$ on it if they want :).
Unfortunately, 4G part seems to be locked to Telstra.

    • $200 is enough to go as a default on credit report. So if you don't want a home loan or need credit in the next few years that's fine.

      • +4

Why would you want to risk a credit default for keeping a crappy modem?

      • +1

No new home loan planned, but if they want the modem back, I will take it to a Telstra shop. No sign of them asking for it, though - "no further action is required" email says.

    • +3

The t&cs have been changed to say now the modem doesn’t have to be returned, I screenshotted it, they probably have no idea what to do with them all

  • +1

I assume this deal won’t be repeated haha, it was fantastic

    • +1

This is at least the second instance of this deal, but I had so many freebies I didn't use it. There was also the $1 for 1 month deal. So it might come back at some point.

      • +1

I loaded up on the belong sims, so I’ve got some data for home internet as well in between freebies

        • +2

Same here. Apart from $2 NBN for 2 months, I got a free modem (that is not overly useful), around 110k points portion of which got me enough 4G data for several years and Logitech webcam, as well as free streaming services for several months.

It's really a gift that keeps on giving…

          • +1

@Miroslav: The free router has better WiFi then my previous router and can reach the opposite side of the house on the other level.

Also whilst not open it is hackable so can support third party SIP/VOIP. I wish I found that out before purchasing a new ATA but them's the breaks.

            • +1

@brisdaz: yeah this modem is actually better than my google wifi… now i feel sad remembering how i paid $380 for it lol. still left it plugged in for the sake of it

            • @brisdaz: @brisdaz I should have said "not overly useful to me" :). Smart modem 3 WiFi signal is indeed better compared to my old router, but several older devices had trouble connecting and the internet had random dropouts. I might have not spent enough time trying to set it up properly, but the old router worked out of the box. And still does.

          • @Miroslav: Enough 4g for several years? How? The belong sims expire within 12 months.

            • +2

@TomGum: @TomGum Data gifting https://www.belong.com.au/support/mobile/data-and-usage/how-… . You can transfer unused data to other Belong SIM.

$80 pack, that is often 2000 Telstra points, can buy you $70 500GB/month data plan. Transfer that to a SIM on a $15 plan, that lasts 6 months, then another one, etc. The SIMs expire in 12 months, but if you activate the last $80 pack on day 364 from your purchase, it'll last you at least another six months. I've still got enough points for more Belong $80 SIMs, so I can buy more and just keep on transferring the unused data.

Finally got my 50k bonus points when I complained to support yesterday. Now should I hope that another 50k points will be credited to my account automatically like some of you guys here hahaha?

and just redeemed for Samsung Buds2 Live for 55k points worth $219. Thank you Telstra

    • +1

Are you still connected to their service? They refused to give me 50k a few days ago cause I already chucked out, at first they said “you failed our credit assessment” after I sent them the screenshot of the promo and the order completion ticket then they were saying “you should be connected for 3 months”. When I ask for their terms they said the promotion already expired and asked for non-existent promotion details. I knew it’s freebie, but I don’t think I deserve such service, which made me furious.

      • Did you ask it for it to be escalated; it should have been automatically honoured but it was not

        • I said I am going to make a complain to TIO it seemed like they don't care. Do I just ask for case being escalated by trying the second time? My gosh I was so angry that day, really so tired to argue with them. Also I will be travelling overseas in a few days, I am just not sure I still have so much enegy to deal with their terrible and rude service.

          • +1

@rainbowyen: The Telstra points thing is supposed to be escalated though their points team: I’ll see if I have a generic email; they will send you a form to fill out

          • +1

            @rainbowyen: [email protected]

I had to escalate this too 🤦‍♂️

Email will end up reading ‘We've reviewed your enquiry and have adjusted 50,000 your points balance.
You can check your points activity on plus.telstra.com.au/benefits’

      • Yeh I'm still connected to their service, it will expire in 5days on the 17th August.

I need to look for another free NBN or I'm thinking of joining More internet with the CBA special.

  • Looks like my 3 months BINGE subscription has lapsed only after 1 month(activated before offer expiry by end of June) after I cancelled my Telstra NBN last month, anyone else facing the same issue? Can we do anything about it?

1 Year Disney+ going strong though!

  • Where did it say there was 50000 bonus? Telstra rep claiming they haven't had this promo since last year. Does anyone have a photo?

  • Can someone who is still connected to this or left but sim back up is still working - im still on Telstra but I'm pretty sure their sim backup isn't working because

-they disconnected my service and told me my sim was cancelled
-resigned me up so I'm still using the same modem but never sent me another sim

Just lost connection for half the day and had 0 sim backup despite them saying it should be working. When I log in the router page under 'mobile', it says enabled with a green circle, but status disconnected. Under sim, it also says status disconnected.

Is it supposed to say that if the sim is activated as they are saying its disconnected because my nbn is working and it'll be working when my nbn isn't (which it clearly didn't)

    • +2

      Hey mate,

I had taken this deal myself and dad as well. Both of us were using the older Telstra modem (4g back was working) with order telcos. Moved to this Telstra deal and after 2 months we moved to another telco, and all of a sudden the 4g on both the modems stopped working. Although the modem status says it’s online on backup mode, there is no data pass through.

      • Thanks. I did take the sim out and when I put it in the modem page shows 2 bars (I dunno of that's the standard picture of it or what lol) but the signal is orange so I guess its active? Still didn't work when my nbn went down though so pretty sh't anyway

  • how long did you guys get the bill for the modem? My regular billing cycle is 18 Aug, I cancelled my NBN on 1st Aug. Still no bill. Am I safe or not yet

    • +1

Mine came on the next bill so you may be safe but take a screenshot of the part of the page where it says you don't need to return it just in case

      • Thanks mate! Appreciate your reply :)

        • Did you end up being charged?

  • +1

Just cancelled the service. They cancel it as they're chatting to you, so if you're using it to cancel, it will be cut off. The 4G stopped working too. They confirmed I won't be charged any further, and I saved the chat transcript.
