The Complete Far Side - $104.00 Delivered @ Unleash Store

“Every one of these cartoons is just something that drifted into my head when I was alone with my thoughts. And, for better or worse, I ‘jotted’ them down. It was only later, when perhaps I received an angry letter from someone, that it struck me: Hey! Someone’s been reading my diary!” —Gary Larson, from the preface to The Complete Far Side

Originally published in hardcover in 2003, The Complete Far Side was a New York Times bestseller. Now it’s back as a paperback set with a newly designed slipcase that will delight Far Side fans.

Revered by its fans as the funniest, most original, most “What the … ?”-inspiring cartoon ever, The Far Side® debuted in January 1980 and enjoyed an illustrious 14 years on the world’s comics pages until Gary Larson’s retirement in 1994. The Complete Far Side celebrates Larson’s twisted, irreverent genius in this ultimate Far Side book.

A masterpiece of comic brilliance, The Complete Far Side contains every Far Side cartoon ever syndicated—over 4,000 if you must know—presented in (more or less) chronological order by year of publication, with more than 1,100 that had never before appeared in a book. Also included are additional Far Side cartoons Larson created after his retirement: 13 that appeared in the last Far Side book, Last Chapter and Worse, and six cartoons that periodically ran as a special feature in the New York Times Science Times section as The Far Side® of Science. Creator Gary Larson offers a rare glimpse into the mind of The Far Side® in quirky and thoughtful introductions to each of the 14 chapters. Complaint letters, fan letters, and queries from puzzled readers appear alongside some of the more provocative or elusive panels. Actor, author, and comedian Steve Martin offers his sagacious thoughts in a foreword, and Larson’s former editor describes what it was like to be “the guy who could explain every Far Side cartoon.”

During its 14-year run, The Far Side® was syndicated internationally to over 1,900 daily newspapers. It spawned 23 books and has been translated into 17 different languages.

I purchased the hard-cover edition a couple of years back. These are very large and heavy volumes (2). I chose the hard-cover over the soft-cover edition in this post as I was concerned that the binding may not be strong or durable due to the size.

That said, stored inside the glorious slip-cover, this title sits pride of place on my coffee table and never fails to draw interest from my visitors.

    CAUTION:
    1. You may need to limit your visitor's viewing sessions as once people get started, it becomes harder to shu them out the door around midnight :)
    2. If suffering from depression, you may need to give up on ALL antidepressants and cognitive-behaviour therapies ;)

Just a quick side note to anyone skim-reading, the OP's deal is NOT for the hard-cover version described here.

Completely different versions, and the hardback is indeed a 'display worthy' piece… but is twice the price.

And for those interested, Amazon has the paperback version for $119.20 (Prime)…. so OP's deal isn't bad value at all.

      • Hardcover one looks to have gotten down to the ~$160 mark in the past. Amazon hasn't had it in stock for ages though.

      • And for those interested, Amazon has the paperback version for $119.20 (Prime)

Amazon: “Number 1 best seller in Erotic Graphic Novels.”

Larson must have got a bit spicy towards the end of his career.

A few of the amazon comments seem to suggest the panels are small for the size of the book. Would anyone who owns these be able to comment?

I have this exact collection I purchased a few years ago. I read your question and went and had another look and IMO there's nothing wrong with the size of the panels, with 4 per page or sometimes 1 larger and 2 squares. I don't regret the purchase at all.

Thanks for sharing - I went through all the Far Side galleries I could get my hands on (and bought the annual Far Side calendar) in my teen years, and I have no recollection of that "Girrage limos" comic haha

Good luck to everyone placing an order with these clowns. My first and last order with them was for this same title in May 2021.

The item was showing as in-stock and available from the Sydney Warehouse. (Price then was $99 incl GST, BTW).

No delivery date was stipulated, but their ‘Shipping and returns’ page creates a reasonable expectation of timely delivery to a delivery address also in Sydney. But regardless of any expectations created by the seller, the order was CANCELLED BY THE SELLER shortly after the order was accepted and payment taken from me.

Only correspondence from the seller was the cancellation email dated 12May21 and the payment wasn't reversed by the seller or PayPal. In the end, CBA sorted it out via a MasterCard scheme chargeback against PayPal.

All emails to them bounced as undeliverable.
I tried contacting them twice via the PayPal Resolution Centre but there was no response.
I tried telephoning them, numerous times, on the number (0413 298xxx) shown on their website – which dialed-out and diverted to voicemail. I tried contacting them via their secondary/parent website (http://www.maxsbooks.com) – which then disappeared. I visited the stated store address (35 Glebe Street, Glebe NSW 2037) – a business by that name was not there. I tried visiting the stated address of the parent company, “Max’s Books and Fun” (Level 2 71 Longueville Rd, Lane Cove, NSW) – and a business by that name was not there either.

The Twitter account on their website linked to their ecommerce platform provider – see https://twitter.com/nopCommerce.

Shady as can be. Buyer beware.

    • That all said, my copy I bought from Amazon and had no problems.

Happy to hear you got a good result. 👍

  • Thanks OP, will look great next to my Complete Rear Side collection.

  • Hey, I received my order today after ordering last Thursday.
Main feedback would be that there was no email confirmation of the order when it was placed only when it had been shipped.
